Renault 11 Turbo Phase 2 Restoration

Just putting a few ideas and faults I have seen in the pass , not doubting your ability to get things spot on , it’s always something silly that you miss . Like over spray on the starter motor from not taking first prize ,
Hey all ideas welcome Stu, wasn’t meant to sound condescending, thought I’d followed the original pipework when I bent the rear lines??? Will get the new calipers hopefully this weekend, and then go from there! 👍👍👍

If the wheel is getting warm and the lever's not moving, it looks like it's sticking on, on that side. If it had been doing it for the MOT, it would've failed. It could only be the caliper or cable. Easy to pop off the cable connection and with the help of an assistant check it's not the cable. You should be able to pull it back to off after it's been pulled on. Might just be a dodgy cable. I would advise leaving a bit of reserve travel on the handbrake, as it helps the adjustment mech work better. You can always adjust it up for MOT time, then ease it back off again. I used to cheat on the 8 by winding the piston out till I had a 2 click handbrake, then wind it in a quarter turn or so put it back to normal. A screwdriver fitted the piston cut out perfectly, so the whole process took about 90 seconds with no need to jack the car up or remove wheels. Obviously there was no anti rotation pip on the pads. I once had a recon caliper that didn't adjust, hauling it to bits revealed that whoever put it together assembled the thrust race put the outer tracks on the wrong way round and the increased friction in the bearing stopped the mech adjusting up. It's a poor design really.

I never figured out why the piston isn’t allowed to rotate coming out, but happy to be rotated to go back in..?

If it rotated out it will put the brake on, if it went in it could stop the brake working (out of travel) that's why there's usually a locking mechanism, pip or bump on the pad. The adjuster is like a multi- start thread with a high helix angle, kinda like a woodscrew which the handbrake actuator moves up and down to adjust.

never had any luck with recon callipers on Renaults fronts or backs , all works on such fine tolerance. Fitting new rear pads , release cables, rubber boot off check mechanism for operation , wind calliper back . Check for free play in the lever there was a tolerance from Renault if ok fit new pads pump out brakes check for binding , we used to bed them in up the road hand brake cables disconnected come back re connect adjust cables, always worked for us

Ive just done a pair of 21 calipers with new seals and pistons, stripped, cleaned, greased, the lot.

No handbrake when I pull the lever now rofl.gif

I feel your pain
There was a place up your neck of the woods that refurbed them years ago ,different piston and threaded bit from standard you could handbrake turn 5 after that . But slightly longer pedal travel . Keep getting flashbacks from the good old days , I will be re shelling Gt turbos next

Got a new couple of calipers from Autodoc and put a new one on today and so far, feel I’ve fixed the issue with the rear Offside caliper sticking.

Think there was just too much play in the mountings that was causing it to become “cocked” on the sliders and stick the brakes on..??

You can see the difference in the play between the old caliper (All red) and the new one (Silver & Red) in this GIF below, if it works..??

By Jove, it works!!! 🤣

Summat defo not right with the Red caliper, like slider inserts missing, wrong size bits. Some recon stuff terrible, some new stuff just as bad....
Yeah, that’s my thinking.. bought new calipers for both sides, and although the other one isn’t binding or causing issues, I think I’m going to change it for one of these new fellows I’ve got..

Back home safe this evening with absolutely ZERO issues with the 11 Turbo

But of a mix up on the way home, Sarah missed me turning off, so we both came home different ways, ended up turning into a bit of a Top Gear challenge with us driving our respective routes on the Race Home. (The Red Ring represents Home 🏡 and Sarah was the one at the bottom (Raider) and I’m the one at the top):

You can see as we both neared Peterborough, it was very close, considering we separated on the M6 near Stoke.

As you can imagine I was trying my best to beat her, and the 11T was with me all the way…. my confidence growing with every extra mile driven.

In the end, I got beat :punish.gif: but only by about 10 minutes, you can see how close I was when in got the notification of her arrival home from the Ring camera!!

So 343 miles over the course of this weekend… what have I learnt..?
  • The car drives really well and isn’t phased by traffic or torrential rain 🙄 and has enough power to keep up with modern traffic.
  • Although the Carb is running really well now, it’s clearly still over fuelling as I achieved 29.60mpg on one tank of fuel ⛽️. (Anyone got a Wideband AFR tailpipe sniffer they want to lend me??) JOB #1
  • The turbo still isn’t boosting as hard at it does in the 5 (Needle goes to 🕑 rather than 🕒) so need to turn that up JOB #2
  • The turbo boost still seems to be rising slightly as you accelerate in the upper Rev range, want to check for a boost leak through the anti perc valve solenoid. JOB #3
  • The seats are super comfortable to sit in, but they still don’t go back enough for me to find a driving position that doesn’t give me a pain in my right knee after an hour or so… JOB #4
  • The windscreen DAB+ stick on Ariel included with the Blaupunkt Bremen stereo is AWFUL! 💩 Going to get myself a splitter/amplifier so I can use the existing roof Ariel to see if that improves things? JOB #5
  • The wiring for the head unit seems to be incorrect, as it loses all presets as soon as you turn off the key. JOB #6
  • The R19 wider rear axle allows the wheels to rub the rear arches slightly when you go over a big bump… need to sort this JOB #7
  • When you get a good song running through the stereo (Blaupunkt Head Unit, Amplifier, Front speakers and Subwoofer) it sounds BLOODY AWESOME!!! 👌
  • I’m still getting a little squeak from the read pads as I come to stop with light brake pressure… suspect brake valve might have a little too much rear bias..? JOB #8
Not a massive list, but a few things to work through.

Thanks for all the nice comments all you members make about it. Heard a lot of nice things on Saturday at the Auto’s De France exhibition at Oulton Park. Makes all the effort work pay off!!

Working thru my list of jobs and have finished off numbers 4, 5 and 6 this week whilst preparing for Retro Rides Gathering this coming weekend.

Looking forwards to getting out in the car again, and have even dug out my Zender Turbo wheels to put on the car for the show:

Think the wheels looks absolutely AWESOME on the car, but they’re fitted with 195/45/15 tyres from when I was running them on my Raider, so a little bit too small. Think I’m going to have to get myself a set of 195/50/15’s for them long term, but I’ve also got another set of wheels tucked away, that have never seen the light of day since I had them done YEARS ago… may be forced to put new tyres on them… hmm, decisions, decisions 🤔
