Renault 11 Turbo Phase 2 Restoration

You've just convinced me to finally buy a carcoon. fed up of wiping dust and stuff off my car and i feel my car needs a full detail AGAIN.
They are very good bits of kit! But the customer experience is cr@p... Order one on their website, and then you will sit there for months and not know what's going on.. My recommendations would be:
  1. Check their website to see which model you want
  2. Phone them up, and speak to the old lady who answers the phone (Joyce) to confirm availability of the one you want, try & order it on the phone with her with a commitment to delivery....
  3. Buy yourself a waterproof box to house the electronics that run the carcoon, if you're getting an outdoor one like me.

So, this was me on Friday evening:

Trying to check the compression with fuel is a recipe for disaster… 🔥🔥🔥

Following that little debarcle, I was left with this:

Heart was well and truly broken after all the time is out into creating a MINTY fresh engine bay… 💔💔💔

So I broke out the Karcher, and got jet washing… and actually ended up with this::

So what was the damage…??? ONE PLASTIC CLIP… so far…!!! Yes I am a lucky boy..

Went back to the car this morning, and armed with a new compression tester, I reset all of the valve timing and finished with this:

Buoyed by that I out the carb back on, and had a fiddle with a couple of things, and the car fired up on the first time of the key and ran as sweet as a 🥜

Watch this space…

After a full weekend of driving the 5 Raider:
I returned home this afternoon full of vim and vinegar to get the 11 Turbo back together following the little 🔥….

An hour or so of careful fitting and cleaning, soon had the engine bay back to looking good:

The cars not taxed or MOT’d yet this year, but I wanted to just see what was going on with her, so took a tentative drive up & down my privately owned proving ground 🤫 and she felt good. Gave her a bit of boost in first gear, and managed to blow off a boost hose.

Went home and tightened that up, and also torqued up the wheel bolts too (they were all loose) then back out, and she feels very healthy again…?

Getting an MOT booked ASAP!!

Well, it’s the night before the MOT, and I’ve been working on the car right up to the wire to prepare it for the big event!!

21:17 this evening was the exact moment I ACTUALLY got everything working like it should!!! To be honest I’m in a little state of shock!!! 😲😲😲

There’s been 2 issues I’ve been chasing to fix:

MASSIVE BLACK SMOKE WHILST IDLING AND RUNNING
  • The cars been running like an absolute 💩 bag since I put it back together, and I’ve been convinced the carb was wrong somehow..??
  • I took it to @sparkie and he improved the situation, but it was still puffing the black smoke
  • @DaveL485 lent me the old carb of his 9 Turbo, fitted that and I couldn’t get the car to run.
  • By this time I was starting to think there was an issue with the engines compression, and the rings had lost their “spring”
  • @Brigsy had been onto me several times to test the compression, so this was what I was working through when I had my little 🔥 incident.
  • I checked the valve clearances and adjusted them all back to the 0.2 - 0.25 as recommended in the Haynes Manual.
  • Still not really sure what I’ve fixed… but since I put the car back together and “fire sealed” the engine, she’s now running like a little top!!
  • Buoyed by this I had another go at leaning out the carb misfire screw and found I could now wind it in a lot more..
  • To that end, I can now actually start the engine from cold and it’s running right…
SPEEDO NOT LOGGING MILES
  • The car hasn’t logged 1 miles since I rebuilt it, as the Speedo wasn’t logging the miles.
  • It’s not like I’ve been driving the car anywhere and missing out on miles, as the car has been running so bad (see above) and I’ve been trailering it to the shows to stop picking up any stone chips.
  • So now I’ve completed my “showing” of the car, I want to actually use the rotten thing, so want it right.
  • The original clock set has a broken connection so I changed to another set I had
  • IMG_5480.webp
  • To cut a long story short, I ended up having to re-solder the broken connector and then re-fit to the clock set, and at exactly 21:17 this evening I got it working!!!
Let’s see how we get on tomorrow with the MOT!! I feel rather confident…. (Famous last words…)

IT BLOODY PASSED!!!
🎉🍾🎊🥳🍻👏🏻🥂🎁🎈🪅

But like everything with this car, it wasn’t plain sailing… 🤦🏼‍♂️

First stop was the local petrol station for some more Fire Juice 🔥 (Couldn’t resist a few photos)

Then the drive to the garage. Everything was going great and the car was running like a little champ until I got to my first bit of dual carriageway… wanted to overtake an old biddy in her Corsa, so pulled out and gave it the first Wide Open Throttle action for a LONG time..!!
Accelerating away nicely I soon dispatched Corsa Lady, but then when I dipped the clutch to change gear, the engine revved its tits off and the needle got to about 5:00 on the gauge!!! 🕔
Realising there was an issue with the carb, I turned the engine off, and wondered if turning it off and on would fix it… turned the key back on, and the loudest Key-pop ever… ‼️ 😂😂😂
By this time, Corsa lady had re-caught and undertook me so I slowly coasted to the side of the road, on a roundabout, right over another dual carriageway… !!
Fumbling around the carb, I found a loose hose clip, and had wedged itself under the throttle, holding the carb wide open!! Jiggled it out of the way, and was soon back up & running.

Drove the rest of the way to the MOT Station, and she was back to purring like a pussycat 🐱.

Left if there and walked to my parents to continue working. Before too long I got a call saying everything ok and it passed!!

DELIGHTED!!!!

Walked back to the centre with my Dad, and had a photo for prosperity:

The drove it back home, stopping off at a favoured photo and Doughnut Haunt: 🍩
IMG_5491.jpegFollowing a recommendation from @Brigsy I’m going to have a day on it this weekend, checking EVERY bolt is tight to spec. Then she should be ready for her first roadtrip to Oulton Park for the Auto’s de France show on 8th July:
