Renault 11 Turbo Phase 2 Restoration

So guys... were going into another bloody lockdown for a month... and quite probably two the rate things are going. Need to keep myself occupied during these dark winter nights... so had better get cracking again with project 11 Turbo!! :grin.gif:

Got the original rear bumper back from my painter a few weeks ago, after I realised the new one I bought was for a 5 door... and they're bloody different.. :ireful2.gif: ANY-WAY, I got it back and it was looking as good as new. He really did a remarkable job of repairing it, and then re-painting it.

Before I could re-fit it to the car though, I needed to do a couple of small jobs. First thing was to re-fit a foam strip that was originally installed from the factory behind the bumper.. to no-doubt, stop it from rattling when fitted. I (obviously) had a picture of the original strip, from when I was breaking the car down:

So I had a few lengths of foam tape, and one fitted the bill:

Next it was to get the bumper ready to fit. First thing was to re-fit the small reflectors that are positioned in the sides of the bumper. Thankfully I had some new ones from the (other) wrong bumper that were correct, and they just slipped in a treat:

Next it was time to tackle the rear bumper strip... I'd bought a couple of new OE Bumper strips many years ago, and dug them out of my parts stash:Thing is, one of them was RED and one of them was CHROME. I was always a guesstimate if I'd brought the correct ones, as the part numbers never matched up.. but today I found out. The Chrome one was correct, the Red one not.

Wanting to keep the strip OE (I did toy with the idea of fitting the chrome strip, but decided against it) I had to transform the Chrome into Red... So I spent a couple of hours cleaning/degreasing and then re-covering the bumper Chrome Strip with some of the RED pin-striping I'd bought for other mouldings on the car:

Once the bumper-strip was all covered, I then spent a few minutes ensuring the pin-striping was properly stuck on, by heating it with a hot-air gun, and pressing it firmly on. Once the pin-striping was fitted, I was then time to "Clip" the bump-strip back into the bumper:

I am SOOOOOOOOO pleased with how this turned out!! The bumper looks FABULOUS!! And even better when it's all bolted back onto the car:

Thanks for reading! :)

That red pin stripe looks great. How did you stop it going all "Renault" and lumpy? It looks super smooth there

Thank you @andybond. The OE Bump-strip is a PROPER thick piece of plastic and REALLY clips into the bumper strongly. Once it's in, it ain't coming out!! The clips hold it so firmly, so that's why there's no wavyness. But as for the pin-stripe itself, the hot air gun and smooth out, helped ensure it was really fixed properly. It's really satisfying seeing these small things come-good!

Had a play with my new seat foam set today to see how they compare and found a couple of interesting things..

The difference between the OE Bolsters and these new ones isn’t that big at all, about a qtr of an inch as I measured it:

Therefore ( @DaveL485 ) its possible to fit the ORIGINAL seat bolster fabric to these new bolsters with a good tug of the material. This is good in the end, as it means the guy that will be re-upholstering these seats won’t need to make new patterns that risk not fitting as well.

However you can definitely see a difference in the shaping of the bolster when you compare the original and new:

But the real test, is the official @Big Steve - Raider fat Arse test... and I can confirm that when I do indeed sit my big fat arse on the new seat bolster assembly, I could definitely feel the difference between the new bolster and the old

So nows the time to get cracking and get some of that hideously expensive OE Seat material ordered 💵💰🥴

Thanks for reading 💺 🙂

So now's the time to get cracking and get some of that hideously expensive OE Seat material ordered 💵💰🥴

2 Metres of the stripy Seat material ordered. I think it will be enough to cover the centre of the seats. For the edges and the rest of the interior, I'm going to see what my upholsterer guy can get hold of for a WHOLE lot more reasonable price.

In preparation for the material arriving, I disassembled the Front seats:

And then the rear seats:

Now that the seat frames are fully exposed:

There's a few scabby areas of rust that are showing through.. so I'm going to give them a bit of a birthday over the coming weeks and rub them down, rust treat, prime and then paint to bring them back to their former glory.

Should kill off a weekend or two in this current COVID-19 Lockdown!! :secret.gif:

Thanks for reading ☢️

Love it when you find a bit of history with a car.. whilst pulling the seats apart last night, I found this old receipt 🧾
3BBE566D-452D-4EF7-A74F-9E398F2B84D7.jpeg
Looks like the previous owner had a liking for the old Grant Whiskey 🥃 .. 🤔

I looked a little harder at the receipt and saw that the date of purchase was Tuesday 26th July 1994:

I was looking to see if I could get a little more information on where this purchase was made... and then noticed that the receipt had the VAT number of the company on it..!

Quick Google shows me that sure enough, “Shoprite” are on the Isle of Man 🇮🇲 and the history I have with the car says it was originally supplied to its first owner on the Isle of Man!!
5F1A59BE-2E13-43F1-936E-39139EAF9484.jpeg
Now this is a great piece of information for me!! Because it proves that the car was indeed in the Isle of Man and interestingly, aligns with the date I have on my V5/ Logbook/ Vehicle Documentation that says the car was first registered in the UK on the 7th November 1994:

838851A8-AD50-49A1-A273-DA2CE65D1420.jpeg

So now I can say with certainty that this car was with its original owner on the Isle of Man, until late 1994, when it then was imported back to the UK!!

And all from a bloody Receipt... which I binned last night!! > Now running off to the garage to see if I can dig it out of the bin!! :D
