5 GT Turbo R5 GT Turbo - Complete strip down and re-build #1

Sure the box will work as well as it looks, thanks for sharing so many pics of it as I am sad and find it very therapeutic 😀 @Big Steve - Raider has finsihed the 11 noe so no more vintage therapy from his lol

Sure some choice words were deleivered in the garage to said compressor

Maybe yesterday was just not the day, could always be something worse and sure you will back on it in no time @Chris74# ;)
@Duncan Grier there definitely were some choice words flying around, there still are this morning as I trail the inter web looking for a replacement! the price of these things is outrageous!

Yep as soon as you go half decent make/spec it 🚀 and then you have man maths to figure in as you start to glance at next models up.....v argument of how much am I really going to use it 😀

Only reason 'tank' is still in my garage is cost to replace. 1963 will never die cast iron submarine tank, bit slow to fill from empty due to single pot and biggest few hp motor ever 😀 lol. Only problem is its too heavy to move into my other garage and a engine hoist onto trailer job

They don’t make them like that anymore! Chinese imports now! Replacement/ throwaway mentality, not many people actually repair things nowadays! 👍🏻

Fair play on rebuilding the box! Not something your average DIY mech can do. There was nothing wrong with mine, but I still sent it off for a £500 rebuild.....it now leaks.... Never did before 🤦🏻‍♂️

Been told it is the Selector seal and the box needs to come out for it to be replaced. Called the builder and they said it probably isn't seated properly??

My compressor blew up, sgs were pretty good and it went back to the manufacturer who rebuilt it and sent it back within 2 weeks. Mines made by sealey

Couldn't do nothing on the car today, had to feed my habit!! ;)

I decided to dig out the servo and give it a clean up as the brakes are what I will be tackling after the bodywork, and I shouldn't have to spend any money just cleaning stuff up!!
IMG_4524 Large.webp
IMG_4526 Large.webp
I got the servo through the parts washer and then got the wire brush on it!
IMG_4527 Large.webp
IMG_4528 Large.webp
IMG_4529 Large.webpIMG_4530 Large.webpIMG_4531 Large.webp
I plugged the holes in the front of the servo!
IMG_4532 Large.webp
I then got the rust converter out and gave it a liberal brushing over!
IMG_4533 Large.webp
IMG_4534 Large.webp
IMG_4535 Large.webp
IMG_4536 Large.webp
I left that to dry out and gave the other bits a clean!
IMG_4538 Large.webp
I got new nylons and washers! Then I gave it a quick going over with some 500grit and gave it all a wipe with some panel prep! Then on with the etch primer!
IMG_4539 Large.webp
IMG_4540 Large.webp
Then on with some black gloss paint and lacquer!
IMG_4541 Large.webpIMG_4542 Large.webp
I gave it a few coats of black and lacquer, left it a couple of hours and then fixed the bits back to it!
IMG_4545 Large.webp
New nuts and washers!
IMG_4546 Large.webp
Inserted air filter!
IMG_4547 Large.webp
Rubber cover!
IMG_4548 Large.webp
And vacuum hose and one way valve!

Thanks for reading guys!

Quick update -

SGS have come back to me today and confirmed that they have repaired the compressor under warranty! what a result!
While the compressor has been out of service, I have been sorting and cleaning some of the parts ready to go back on the car at a later date!
IMG_4555 Large.webp
IMG_4556 Large.webp
IMG_4560 Large.webpIMG_4561 Large.webpIMG_4564 Large.webpIMG_4566 Large.webp
I also got the pedal box out and stripped it for cleaning and powder coating!
IMG_4567 Large.webpIMG_4568 Large.webpIMG_4569 Large.webpIMG_4570 Large.webp
I started to give a heat shield a clean!
IMG_4594 Large.webp
I then stripped the wiper mechanism, stripped it and cleaned it and put it back together!
IMG_4595 Large.webpIMG_4596 Large.webpIMG_4604 Large.webp
IMG_4605 Large.webpIMG_4606 Large.webpIMG_4607 Large.webpIMG_4612 Large.webp
Gave the motor a clean up!
IMG_4615 Large.webpIMG_4616 Large.webp
Stripped the mechanism back to bare metal and then etch primed it followed by some galve paint!
IMG_4617 Large.webp
IMG_4620 Large.webp
IMG_4621 Large.webp
Saw a little trick on You tube on how to restore old plastic, so gave it a go on the wiper shrouds!

IMG_4622 Large.webp

IMG_4625 Large.webp
I then reassembled the wiper mechanism!

Got a few hours out there today, just cleaning bits n pieces up! Started with some of the plastics - inner wheel arches, engine bay closures and engine under guard!
IMG_4630 Large.webp
I gave them a jet wash, then a degrease, then a quick sand, and then a panel prep wipe!IMG_4631 Large.webp
IMG_4636 Large.webp
IMG_4637 Large.webp
Then a coat of Halfords black bumper paint!
IMG_4634 Large.webpIMG_4635 Large.webp
IMG_4638 Large.webp
IMG_4639 Large.webpIMG_4640 Large.webpIMG_4642 Large.webpIMG_4641 Large.webpIMG_4643 Large.webpIMG_4644 Large.webpIMG_4645 Large.webpIMG_4646 Large.webpIMG_4647 Large.webp
I then got the wipers stripped and took the arms back to bare metal before etch priming, black satin and lacquer! Look as good as new!
IMG_4648 Large.webpIMG_4649 Large.webpIMG_4650 Large.webpIMG_4651 Large.webpIMG_4652 Large.webpIMG_4653 Large.webpIMG_4654 Large.webpIMG_4657 Large.webpIMG_4658 Large.webpIMG_4664 Large.webp
I then finished off the heat shield that I started the other day, and gave it a coat of VHT paint!
IMG_4655 Large.webpIMG_4656 Large.webpIMG_4659 Large.webpIMG_4660 Large.webpIMG_4661 Large.webp
I also gave the horn a clean up with the wire brush!IMG_4662 Large.webp
IMG_4663 Large.webp
Finished items!IMG_4666 Large.webp

Looks good, interested to see how all the good work weathers on plastics 😉

I assume that is a plastic undertray for engine...is that r5 or clio?

I’m hoping that because it’s bumper paint and generally not on show, that it will last. I managed to resist the urge to spray any lacquer on it for that reason!

I spent all day yesterday at a body shop doing a days training. It was very interesting and i think it will help with the rest of the project! The guy there (Tony) has agreed to let me paint the car in his booth, with him in attendance - just in case I mess it up! Some pics below. The pick up is an Audi S4!

Practice panels in the booth, I painted these through the day using direct gloss, and a 2k base and clear coat.

I cleaned and etch primed the bonnet hinges ready for a base & clear when I finally get my compressor back!IMG_4681 2 Large.webp
IMG_4688 2 Large.webp
Bumper blocks - front and rear! Though the parts washer, panel prep, sand and blow over with some bumper plastic paint!
IMG_4682 2 Large.webp

IMG_4683 2 Large.webp
IMG_4684 2 Large.webp
Got them done, and hung them on the line to dry out! :)
IMG_4685 2 Large.webp
More engine bay plastic!IMG_4686 2 Large.webp
Radiator shroud!
IMG_4687 2 Large.webp
absolutely caked in crap!
IMG_4690 2 Large.webp
Swirl pot!
IMG_4691 2 Large.webp

IMG_4695 2 Large.webp
and the air horn!IMG_4696 2 Large.webp

IMG_4701 2 Large.webp
IMG_4704 2 Large.webp
I had a look at the heater box, It looks like it is broken!
IMG_4699 2 Large.webp
Hmmmmmm!!
I found a brake compensator spring in the loft which I cleaned up and zinc plated!
IMG_4618 Large.webp
I can't believe they are charging £42 for this on ebay at the minute! The cost of parts is an absolute piss take!
Thanks for reading guys!
