5 GT Turbo R5 GT Turbo - Complete strip down and re-build #1

Thanks Clarky! Any ideas on home extraction? :D

Effectively you need to recreate a paint booth, where you’ve got filters to remove the airborne dust and then heaters to help dry the paint.

It’s not an easy task to create a garage paint booth, but you’re an industrious chap, have a quick Google search and watch a few YouTube videos on how other people have approached this issue.

The quick and easy way is typically to use plastic sheeting and a fan, but beware of that because of the crazy amount of static you’ll get from the plastic sheeting…

Thinking about it, why don’t you paint all of the non critical areas (underneath, arches, door shuts, engine bay etc…) and then do ALL of the prep for the outside, then find someone who will just lay the paint down on the outside, in a proper booth.

In the USA, it seems a thing to be able to rent a paint-booth for a day to allow you to paint your own car, but I’ve not yet found anyone willing to do that in Blighty.

My partner in crime @jas_racing swears by these guys near Peterborough as a small friendly bodyshop, who are willing to help out. He recently took his fathers car there to be repaired following a number of scratches/scrapes/dents and he priced the job up following pictures @jas_racing shared, and then when the job was finished, actually charged him LESS than the estimate because there’s wasn’t as much work as he’d quoted for!!! Rare Nowadays!!

you have to move filtered air, not just extract air

A grand to paint it? seems bloody cheap. You really need to make sure that shell is perfect before you commit.
take a look at my paint job, thats how you get a 5 straight...ish. I still have a couple of wobbles in the doors on the strengthen bars...and there new doors!!!!

I got the inside and reveals of the doors done today in between teams meetings! ;) after sanding with 400G this time, panel wipe and tack cloth, I got the first coat down!

I let this flash off for around 20 mins, until it was dry enough to go over with the tack cloth again! Then got a heavier 2nd coat on it!

Again I left it to flash off a little longer, hit it with the tack cloth and then turned the pressure down on the gun and pulled it away a bit and almost misted the doors with a fine covering of paint, trying to do away with the streaks i encountered on the inside of the bonnet! It seems to have evened out the colour across the doors. I then left it for an hour or so, gave it a wipe with the tack cloth and then got the clear coat on them!

Really happy with the way they have turned out!
I have been thinking about the high build primer and especially the roof of the car and how flimsy it is at the moment, I am going to stick the roof lining back in which will hopefully give it a bit more rigidity for when I am blocking it back!
I went into the loft to get the liner and found that I have spilt oil or brake fluid or something down it!

BUGGER!!! I think I'll get some black paint and paint the head liner, I think it will hide the stain and look pretty good aswell!

Thanks for reading guys!

Got a bit more done today,
I started off by trying to find all of the plugs to go back in the floor of the car, I got these together and gave them a dose of the burner to burn the seam seal off them, and then got them in the blaster to clean them up ready for paint.
I got some etch primer front and back and then some stone chip on the back of them!

Only realised at the end of the day that I am two short!
I then gave the tailgate a sand down, prep wipe and tack cloth before getting the first layer of paint on it and the floor plugs.

IMG_4351 Large.jpegIMG_4352 Large.jpeg
I gave them a couple more coats and left them to flash off for an hour or so. While waiting I got some of the sound deadening out and stuck that in the car! (Thanks @Big Steve - Raider for the inadvertent reminder)

I had to empty the other 5 to steal some of the floor plugs! took some pics for reference later!

That was just the front footwells!!
I then carried on and got the clear coat on the tailgate and plugs and the fuel pressure regulator bracket!

IMG_4368 Large.jpegIMG_4369 Large.jpegIMG_4370 Large.jpegIMG_4371 Large.jpeg
I also got some black fabric paint and gave the headliner a good going over, I underestimated how much paint the headliner would need so its still a bit blotchy, but more paint is on order!

I think this will look brilliant once it gets another couple of coats and is stuck in the car!!

Anyone going to the classic car resto show tomorrow?

Thanks for reading guys!

Got back from the show and got out to the garage to grab a couple of hours! I decided to have a go at getting the floor plugs in and sealed!

Thats all the sound deadening and floor plugs in bar 1, I am going to have to make one for that hole and bond it in position, next time I have some paint mixed up! I then got some more paint on the roof liner!

Today I got the liner in with the assistance of my son! and got on with some masking up this evening! getting close to High build primer stage!

Coming on nicely!

@Chris74# were you tempted/consider welding a patch on the original floor plugs holes then cover with sound deadening?
I was tempted to just weld them over, but wanted to stay as close to original as possible, tbh it would have been quite easy to weld them in! I actually cut them out and welded in repair patches with holes as they were rusted out! 😂
