5 GT Turbo R5 GT Turbo - Complete strip down and re-build #1

Had another day at it today. Decided to go for the full strip down and lift the shell on to the trailer for the trip to the strippers! I have decided to go with Enviro-strip in Tamworth. This is a 30 min drive from here so all good!. The car is booked in for the 4th June.

Started off by dropping the rear axle off, those nuts were a right battle to get off.

But got them off eventually....

Note to self for the future........crack the hub nut before removing the axle, ended up chasing the axle around the garage trying to get the centre nut off!!!
Then moved back to the sub-frame, we have already had this off once and did not tighten the bolts fully so this wasn't too difficult to get off.

We then stripped the sub-frame down, removing the anti-roll bar, suspension struts and steering rack. All of the bushes were knackered and seized, had to cut one of the wishbones off!!

Interior fully stripped now!!

Enlisted the help of my neighbour and Son to see if they could get that bloody door off!!

IMG_3340.webp

Whilst getting the filler cap off, I noticed a bracket inside the wheel arch which looked a bit suspect. I poked at it and it came away leaving a nice hole.....more welding!

IMG_3341.webp

Anyway, all stripped now bar the bloody door and the windscreen.

So we got the parts washer set-up this evening, once we get the shell out, we will get all the parts back down from the loft and begin washing and sorting them out ready for plating and powder coating.......

Thanks for reading!!!

I chuckled when I read this!!!😂😂

A top tip for the future mate, treat yourself to one of these, I’ve never had a nut or bolt they won’t undo!!

Excellent work Chris!! Look forwards to see it back from Enviro-strip!!

Thanks @Big Steve - Raider , I will definitely get one of those wrenches. This door pin won't budge (up or down) I've tried everything.... I'm considering cutting the hinge off the door, what do you think?

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you cut the hinge off, you'll be in a right Buggers Muddle trying to get the door to line up again.

I would get yourself a gas bottle and heat the bugger up... you're not bothered if you scorch a bit of paint now, as the car is going to get dipped..

Do you have a door hinge pin removal tool like this..?

They are FAAAAAR from being great items, but give you a fighting chance. You put the rod thru the hinge, hook the bar onto rod, and then whack it with a Hammer to move the roll-pin. In my experience, they break... but can get it moving?

Drill a hole in the middle of the hinge, right through the pin. Sometimes only having to move half the pin gets it moving.

Or

Stick a really thin dremel cutting disc through the joint in the hinge/door

OK, ordered the tool above direct from your link! I'll give that a go and the heat!! I'll also give @DaveL485 idea with the dremel through the gap between the hinge..thanks for the info guys...a massive help.

So, the windscreen removal kit came today!IMG_3345.webp
So I got straight on it....
IMG_3346.webp
Removed the three seals.....
IMG_3347.webp
IMG_3353.webp
Then set to work with a stanley blade.....
IMG_3354.webp
and before I had time to get the rest of the removal kit out of the box....this happened!!
IMG_3355.webp
Windscreen out with no damage to the car or glass!!IMG_3356.webp
The windscreen surround is in good condition also, which is a result!
IMG_3357.webp

IMG_3358.webp
Glass out job done, and the kit didn't even get a run out!!!!
IMG_3359.webp
Maybe it'll get some use on the next one!!!!

Just that door to get off now, hopefully the kit will turn up tomorrow.

Thanks for reading.

So....had an hour or so to spare today so had another go at that bloody door!! The door pin kit turned up but the pin is that badly damaged now that the kit would not go through it. So got my little heat gun out and applied lots of heat...and gave the door a good ragging for good measure! I gave it some hammer and heard a crack. The pin had snapped halfway down, allowing me to lever the door off the hinge...mission accomplished :boast.gif:
IMG_3360.webp
I'll have to drill the remains of the pin out of the lower hinge.

I then stripped all of the gubbins out of the door and bagged and tagged it! The shell is now on a trolley ready to go.

Thanks for all your suggestions guys, that door was driving me mental!

I've got one of those to do too. Pain in the arse!

I bought one of these to do mine. It helps you make it possible to get the drill-bit into the hinge straight and true. You'll probably find that your drill itself can't get close enough to the car body:

Also it helps to drill the hole a little small, and then use a reamer to make it to size..

The drill adapter turns the drilling action into a right angle, so you can get the centre of the drill in the middle of the hole. Some drills are too big on their own, to get to the centre of the hole.

Oh and make sure you buy a COBALT drill bit to drill that out.. It'll do a lot better than a HSS bit.

We got the shell, doors, tailgate, and sub-frame loaded on to the trailer yesterday, I'm going to drop the rear axle off at a friend at Broadway garage in Burton who is going to strip it down for me. I'll then load that on to the trailer for dipping also. Just need to get some time to get it over to Tamworth then!
