R5 Atmo Gordini Rally Car work

OK, so who has borrowed my 9mm rear brake tool?

I had it twenty five years ago, have you borrowed it?

I have stripped down the rear brakes, and need it back, to adjust the rear brakes!!!

OK, so no one has it?

Any suggestions where I can buy one, or alternatively ways to adjust the cams?

Maybe I will try a lump hammer, and a soft wooden drift?

I think I've found the tool I need:-

Draper 12329 - 1/4“ SQUARE X 11/32“ SQUARE BRAKE ADJUSTING WRENCH

Draper 12329 - Forged from chrome vanadium steel hardened, tempered and chrome plated for corrosion protection. Length 175mm. Display packed.

£1.42 (+ 17.5% VAT)

OK, I've freed off the adjusters (actually needed a 10mm square spanner, was fooled by wear on the adjusters)

Now found another fault, the brake lining is coming away from the shoe:

Has anyone got a decent quality set of rear shoes?

Sorted.

New shoes (were in stock at my local Motor Shop!)

Adjusting the brakes (10mm spanner on front and 10mm square tool on rear)

Off to test the car on a private road.

Can anyone spot the deliberate mistake?

Ans:- The top spring is on the wrong way round. Never mind - I will change it next time.

Oh, and the car certainly is quick for a 1400!

nice one hannu,,, yep the standard atmo i had years ago went well! i reckon yours must be nippy, especially with a little less brake bind  the atmos sound lovely too...keep us posted when you start using it,, id like to come along to spectate.. 8)

Just back from an initial power run on my local rolling road, which has a good reputation for being accurate rather than "ego inflating". I wanted a "health check" on the engine.

Max power 97.5 bhp at 7000 rpm, and a nice flat torque curve, peaking at 87.2 lb ft at 5000 rpm

I'm a bit surprised the twin 40's have not added much power or torque (stock is 93 bhp and 85 lb ft),

Nice car! i was gonna bid for that on ebay! where abouts up north are you? ive got a full blown rally gordini turbo would be good to meet up! are you planning on using the car for racing? you should run it in hillclimbs next year!!! two competing gordini's that would be cool :) how much did you get it for in the end if you dont mind me asking pal?!

Power seems to be a little disappointing as they are 90bhp standard, I was going to convert my Atmo to twin 40's but now I am not too sure

Now stripping the front brakes down, to sort partially siezed front calipers and have a general look:

Disks are good, but track rod end rubbers are shot ...

Solid headlamp shells, ready for good replacement lamp units.

Exhaust downpipe detail.

I'm not far from you, in deepest Cheshire.

I hope to be out in 2007, maybe on the Tour of Cheshire classic rally, in March?

Is that your car on eBay?

Finished stripping and freeing off the front brakes over Christmas, and went for a drive round my local "private track" today.

The car certainly goes well, and easily spins a front wheel ... and sounds nice when pulling 7500 rpm :D

MOT now passed!

Needed a bit of welding to the osf chassis rail, first.

Photos later, but latest work involved raising the ride height and starting to fit the underbody guards, ready for the forests ...

It was in the wrong post i hope you dind mind me moving it.

Still on the trailer ...

Now off the trailer:

I'm still chasing DVLA to return the V5C in my name so that I can tax it, and go for a play to settle the suspension a bit ... :(

Now taxed (from 1st June) and took it for its first drive today. Nice, but still some little jobs to sort out like the handbrake needs adjusting.

Also, I will be stripping all the stickers off and repainting where necessary very soon.
