apparently it can be done, think Tony has done it.. but F..K that. Its a heavy beast so I will be doing and engine out when I have mine repaired/replaced.
I bought a gearbox of Graham - don't think he's about anymore...anyway when i turned up the box was still on the car, so he jacked it up, loosened off the bolts, dropped the box onto his chest & slid out......money exchanged hands & the deal was done.....i think Phil was with me if i remember correctly.....
That was a 2wd car & not a quadra but the thread reminded me.....:loco:

Yes Jon you are right - I was there!! That was some time ago, but as you said Graham rested the box on his chest, and wheeled himself out from under the car.
Focus TDCi the fast one i seem to remember..........think i swapped a set of 17" rims & tyres for the gearbox.....shame really as those wheels were really tasty......oh well....
Thats not his question. Can it be done from underneath ? Yes, offcourse ! With the proper tools its easy (ramp-gearbox lift a.o). If you wanna do this on jacks...not recomanded LOL.
bollox to that. Mine is really easy to get to, yet a real bitch to fit, even with two of us. I Couldnt imagine doing it under the car without a lift and the proper tools.
Stu Harding and I removed mine before ahem:redface: it went to the insurance company (we kindly replaced it with a TXI box supplied by Sibbers:happy. We did it on my drive, 2 man job really but fairly straight forward.
When I do it, I find it easier to take the engine out, then box, then box in then engine in. Thats on the floor though, no ramp or lifts just jacks and stands.
