5 GT Turbo Pink GT Turbo Restoration

Thanks for the reply Nick. Sounds reasonable. Just to be clear, on the bottom edge where the inner and outer meet, would you A: plug weld at intervals and then weld along the entire seem
or
B: plug weld at intervals and use seam sealer dintinol/anti rust/underseal to sela between plugs without welding

Ordered outer sills but struggling to get hold of inners. I'd rather not fabricate my own if they are available but not having much joy. I think Mike at GT spares is a bit unwell so is there anywhere else that can supply them? CGB only supply outers.

At worst could I get away with patching my current inners? I'd rather not as the entire bottom edge is rusted. What steel are the inners made from and where should I try and buy it?

Is the floor, inner arches, and rear quarters made of the same steel at the inner sill or different?

Any help much appreciated. Really enjoying the Silver GTT thread, great inspiration!

Cheers,

Rich

Not my photo but speaks 1000 words

He's gone closer with the welds than factory and Option b, just plug and seal.

There's a guy who makes them for Mike, might be worth going direct. I'd replace rather than replace if you're doing complete outers.

It's all the same as far as I'm aware

Ace picture cheers.

I've got my MIG welder and the outer sills are arriving monday.

I really need inner sills so if anyone knows anyone who could get some sent out that would be magic. PM me with contact details if you can.

If I fail to get inners posted soon i guess I shall have to make my own. What thickness steel do I need? I've never purchased anything like that so where would I go looking for sheet steel (I'm based in Falmouth, Cornwall)

Cheers,

Rich

hi Matt,

I got a very good deal on a Clarke 100e mk2 refurbished.

Just spoken to Mike at GT Turbo Spares. Inners and jacking points on their way.

Next week should be interesting now that all the welding kit has arrived!

keep us posted get you got the bits ordered , ive got welding to do on mine , ive just bought a load of blit hamber stuff from opie oils you get discount from being on here.

im filling the inner sill with cavity wax

A guy on the mig welding forum username pondy. He gets mig welders locally and refurbs them, tests, and sells on.

Mask off ebay for £20
Adapter to take a big gas bottle about £8
cylinder hire for a year £90

so all in I'm looking at £250 for all welding gear and gas, not bad I reckon!

Next week when the panels arrive I'll start practicing welding some scraps, get one side of the car up on jack stands, cut out rusted parts, and have a go at getting some bodywork looking more car-like.

I'm getting a proper jack this weekend. Is this from halfords any good? Will it go high enough to get the car on stands to do everything I could reasonably need to do myself? Comes with 2 free axle stands as well

When you start welding, start on thick metal and learn how the weld pools and chases as you move along a weld line. Within an hour of messing about you should have a decent, smooth weld ability it's not too hard. Experiment with power and wire speed settings...keep the gas high for learning. The only reason to turn it down is economy of gas but dont worry about that while learning.
Then as you start dropping down the metal thickness and start having to reduce power and mess with wire speed you'll understand where you need to get to as regards the above. When you get down to Renault sill thickness, be prepared to get frustrated with blowing holes and untidy welds. It's so fricking annoying and you have to be really careful.

Hi All,
Got the dash out. There's a Cobra alarm been wired in at some stage. That'll have to go. Just not sure what wires have been cut or removed to fit it in the first place.... May be interested in a new dash with loom, but not until all the rust and bodywork is dealt with....
Talking of which....

Can't seem to find a definitive footwell picture without carpet. There is a raised area outlined in ratchet handles below. Is that meant to be raised or is this a result of abuse/corrosion? Its above the chassis beams. Is it ok to cut out and fit new floor sheet over this or do I have to get the whole footwell flat?

Any links to photos of footwell repairs and decent pics a good condition underside and footwell would be a big help.

Cheers for any tips. Rich2015-10-17 13.42.03.webp

Thanks for the replies guys,

So is the floor meant to be flat in the area painted black on my car? I think a fair bit will need cutting out. Tomorrow I'm getting one side jacked as high as possible to start exploring, cutting, welding etc...

Rich

Hi All,

I'm not going to be able to complete this project sadly. I've had a couple of big hip operations and currently out of work, so simply can't afford to keep this. Real shame, still my dream car, but I've not been in a position to spend the time or cash to get it roadworthy. Will be putting it on $bay shortly. I've recently checked it over, hoovered, bagged up all parts, and made sure the engine hasn't seized up. Looking for £1500 and I'd consider part-exchange for a running, MOT'd example. PM me if interested.

Many thanks,
Rich

Thanks Dave,
I'm proper gutted to be honest. The sums on what I have spent storing it are horrific, and far FAR more than a clean original runner cost at the time. I think a resprayed white one, reg xxxxSPY, sold for ~£3k locally the same year I got this. Oh well, live and learn (I hope).
Cheers,
Rich
