Phil's AMC GTA

damn, will that be a big bucks job?

Shouldn't be.

I have the caliper seals- the front calipers appear to be ok.

Rear cylinders $4.80 ea, master cylinder I'm changing as a matter of course, $25. Handcrake cables $7 ea.

I'm hoping the brake lines are ok because they are a bit rusty behind one of the heat shields. Needs further investigation.

Not a huge amount to report, but I've tidied up the diagnostics thingy a bit, it's been a bit too hot to work on the car a whole lot.

Bought a bunch of stuff (master cyl, rear cylinders, flexis) to overhaul the brakes. Redid the rear brake adjuster mechanisms because they were rusted solid, redid the front caliper slide pins etc.

Only got a few more things until I'm happy driving it about.

I can't remember exactly without reading the whole report again but it seems you have trouble starting it if its left sitting. I've a 2litre Volvo 480 that is a sort of spare car in the family (ridiculous I know) so its gone about 6 or 7 months without starting and it always fires up straight away when the battery is connected. It's almost entirely the same as your engine. What did AMC do there? Also, it's funny to see the rev counter jump to 2.5k while cranking. I've never seen a car do that before!

I know how you feel though, I've no money at all and too much work between making a living and college work so my poor 11 project has been dragging on for over a year. Some day!

The rev counter was doing that because the battery was dead and it was having a fit. It doesn't do that on a good battery.

The fuel here sucks. It goes stale in a couple months. It took a while to pump through fuel that would burn.

My oh my, it's been a long time since I updated this.

I've done about 5000 miles in it and it's off the road again because of the brakes. Overhauled the brake shuttle and bias valve because it was stuck solid with old muck and congealed brake fluid.

The ramp at work broke so I'm waiting on that to get it up in the air because there's no hardstanding at the house here.

Still looks horrible but it drives well when it does.
