oil leak....

Ok, i've narrowed my niggling oil leak down the main rear crank shaft oil seal....picked one up from Renault today.....Richard Hillier mentioned that it'll need a "special" tool to be fitted - anyone got one & has anyone have any other handy tips regarding fitting it (other than soaking in oil for 5 - 10 minutes before fitting).........

Also picked up a new dizzy cap & rotor arm so i can fit the magnecore leads....

Don't you just love paying for original parts......not..:icon_evil::icon_evil:

I can't help with the above, but my dizzy is as dry as a grannies crutch :icon_wink:

Let me know when your fixing the crank seal, and will hopefully be along to help, or more likely make the tea :icon_biggrin:

If I wasn't so busy this morning and you let me know in advance I would have brought mine into work:icon_rolleyes::icon_rolleyes:

You should have gone via me:icon_confused:

See you next week some time

No Dave, it's the rear one - oil is spraying up from the flywheel.......lots of oil, no clutch slip & the rear of the head is dry & clean.......so yes it's a major job. Going to pay a visit to Ellis's workshop weekend of the 4th-5th April to hopefully get it sorted......got to get it fixed as it's getting worse & with Le Chatre and the Alps trip this year i don't want to risk it giving up for good abroad......

I've even got a funny feeling it might be crank out as well....:icon_eek:

Thanks Dave - can't wait......NOT looking forward to the job, but i'm NOT paying Renault or my local garage ?300 - ?500 to fix it......:icon_eek::icon_eek:

Has anyone on here actually replaced this seal..........????

yep

done with engine in the engine bay, just separated it from the box, same way as I would change the clutch. John give us a ring tomorrow mate, I will talk you through it, and you can make your own mind up.:icon_cool:

As Craig says, engine up and forward, flywheel off clean everything up and screw driver the old seal out, loob up the new seal and take great care when fitting it not to damage it

Cheers Craig, spoke to Ellis today & that's also his plan.........hopefully get it done in day.....if not, there's always Sunday.....i'll give you a bell this week & you can fill me in on all the grim details...

ive got that tool, solid on the outside, spring in the middle. Got the same for the front crankseal and camseal. Amazing tools, you never fook the bearing.

Silly boy!!!! Read you Haynes manual, and make sure you disconnect the battery 1st!! LOL

Your choice Jonno, either box out or engine out as you'll need to remove the flywheel to access it.

I can't say i've ever used a tool to fit one, usually I just apply a small amount of grease around the outside AND inside lip of the seal, slide the inner lip over the crank end and tap it home with a 'tapping tool'!!

Done loads, never had any probs...

Just a SMALL tip for you as well....before refitting the flywheel bolts MAKE SURE you coat them in 'Loctite thread sealer' or something similar as the holes go all the way through to the other side of the crank to the inside of
the engine and theres a small chance if you don't coat the bolts that oil can seap past them..i've seen it happen!!!

Hope this helps mate :icon_wink:

Picking up the bolts in the morning......hopefully that's it.......except for fresh oil, filter & anti-freeze...
