Some say "this is a characteristic". Mine is a bit notchy when it's cold.

Gearbox oil on the V6 is quite unique, don't put anything other than the recommended oil in there. Your dealer will have the info.

Mine is very similar..... I asume like James said that this is just a characteristic

Same happens to me sometimes so just wait a minute for things to warm up a bit:) Never a problem in the summer just winter!

When I had mine changed last year, Mike at Rentech said that Renault said they could no longer supply TRP, and that instead there was a single appropriately rated oil for all boxes. It's been horrible ever since TBH!

There seems to be confusing data on which oil is correct for our Vees.

The workshop manuals say TRP 75-80
The owners handbook says TRZ 75-80

A technical bulletin says TRZ 75-80 for the CLIO v6 PK6 gearbox.

Gearbox oil: Recommendations 04A
I - INTRODUCTION:
Gearbox oils are high technology products which require
careful management to ensure that they do not
come into contact with water which, even in very small
quantities, may reduce the oil quality and cause damage
to the gearbox or final drive.
II - STORAGE AND USE:
Once opened, any can of oil must be checked to ensure
that it is sealed when closed, to prevent water or
other substances from entering.
III - SPECIAL NOTES:
1 - Storing oil cans:
Cans must be stored:
- in an area sheltered from the weather (rain, snow, spray),
- in a dry place (avoid areas near washing stations),
- hermetically sealed.
2 - Storing components (gearbox or final drive):
When storing a gearbox or final drive which has not been drained, block off air inlets. Store the component in a dry place.
3 - Use of oil:
Cans must be closed after use.To prevent a large surface area of oil from coming into
contact with ambient air, do not decant the oil into a larger container.
In any operation on the gearbox requiring its drainage,
the oil must be replaced by new oil. It is also recommended that you shake the containers
before filling the gearbox, especially after a long period in storage.
4 - Pressure washing (of the vehicle or a component):
During pressure washing, plug the gearbox or final drive
breather pipe to prevent water or other impurities from entering the gearbox or final drive.
If the gearbox or final drive is removed, plug all holes to prevent water or other impurities from entering the gearbox or final drive.

When I bought my car I had a mk1 box that had the non elf oil put in it and at 18k the diff bearings went - am sure its related e.g. even though these cars have weak diffs I wasnt exactly caning the box. I did notice that when I swapped out the shell oil which the dealer had put in and which had the same viscosity etc to the elf oil before the diff went, that the box was much smoother in changing gears and seemed to warm up quicker. Other HK members here have also swapped to the Elf and found its made a difference.

Not sure why the Elf is different but from personal experience it is - I also remember it really stinks as well i.e. rotten eggs smell compared to other brands of gearbox oil could be something to do with it?

I've put a Mk2 box in last year and fingers crossed it will last me a bit longer with the Elf oil put in. I have the Elf bottle at home with the part number which i got from Clarkiev6 and can post it here when I get back to Hong Kong. The only change as in part numbers from what I remember is that they stopped selling 1l bottles now only sell 5 l cos I had to pay 120 quid for it cos it had to be specially ordered through the dealer in Hong Kong!

I wouldnt trust the dealers personally - they put shell in mine first time then when I asked for a change to the right gearbox oil from elf they gave me the wrong part number as well till I checked with Clarkie

On the notchiness front - I found both the mk1 and mk2 boxes are stiff from 1st to 2nd gear from cold - so i usually move off in 2nd till its warmed up. Havent had problems with reverse though I keep in the habit of keeping the clutch depressed a bit longer before trying to push into reverse.

The latest information on gearbox oil available for the Clio v6.

ELF NFP 75/80W 5Litres
Part number : 7711143534
£60.13 +vat

Notes for Renault garages:

It shows as TRX on the screen but that's just an old picture, it comes in as NFP on the bottle.

Use the measuring tool 0000167500 this ensures you DON'T OVERFILL the gearbox.

The gearbox takes 2.2 litres

I too have noticed a slightly notchy change from first to second when cold, loads of cars are like this especially in the colder weather.I personally don't see it as a problem, just treat it with a bit of respect until warm.

I checked the bottle I have at home and your details are correct James for part no

One point though I think the Mk2 box takes more oil cos the diff casing is different e.g 2.4 litres not 2.2?

Your nearest Renault prats dept can order it in for you. Some Vee specialist garages hold a few bottles in stock too.

Is it still horrible or has it got better?

It's settled down to a well worn level of notchy nastiness, but it's not got any worse! The more I regularly I drive it the better it is. One day I'll ...
