NEW HERE. Been for a look around first.

Hi ppl as you can see i am new here. I was a member of the other Renault forum but have since found out that I was wrongly infomed of a project I started.

I have a 1985 Trafic T1000 1.6L Naturaly Asthmatic and wanted to change the Engine for a Diesel.... So I asked on a forum for advice. In my error I posted it was a 1.7L so wires got crossed and i was told any megan , clio or 19 engine would bolt straight onto the bellhousing.....OK
So I went on the hunt for a Renault 19TDI F8Q 1870cc I think.....
Bought a complete car and then the snow came...
That stopped the project. Anyhow I have spent 2 days removing the renault 19 engine carefully also loom exhaust tank ect ect. Then a day on the camper... Only to find the engine and gearbox are totaly different...
Well thats just great......

Has anybody got any good ideas that dont involve lots of money because I have just become redundant aswell......

Right, a 1.7 would have been the F1N engine in which case the F8Q diesel would have been a suitable more or less direct replacement on the same mounts.

Bit of googling reveals that being a 1.6, yours is an A1M engine, so it looks like the only suitable easy swap would be other engines of that family (also fitted to R18), which does not include a diesel.

If you can get hold of the F1N 1.7 mounts (yeah, bit of a long shot), you should still be able to fit that F8Q

Ah right... I think I maybe missed out one point.. The bolt holes on the engine dont meet up at all. The starter is totaly on the other side and will not even fit on the other. The clutch is interchangable and I can fabricate engine mountings. So the exhaust is also on the other side but thats not a problem it can also be fabricated. The bulkhead has to be cut out and made further back to accomadate the VAC pump amongst other things... As you can see I was fully aware of the job ahead BUT..... The F8Q engine will phisicaly not not bolt together... I think I am stuffed. Ah the old Renault 18 I have owned one back in the early 90s. I hit a pothole in the road whilst on the brakes.....NOT GOOD... AH WE HAVE RUST..... Front wishbone came free...OOPSS.
Fuegos also a grand car and maybe any of them Engines but then they are a R18 with a bling body. So the options I have is to fit a 2Liter is that it...?
Apart from going silly and saying the Alpine GTA engine will fit...lol
So any ideas..... the STD engine is painfull. Solex carb...Choke...Points!!!
I think its 65Bhp but now its about 40bhp.... in age.. he he.
It drinks more than my Landrover 2.5L TDI !!! I know I know you are going to tell me its should tune up nice and give me 30mpg...well I dont want it... I want some power....UP HILL....... he he. Any IDEAS ????

Right just pulled out the old Haynes for the R18 1979 to 1986

WHAT A MOTOR...

Engines 1397cc 1565ccMINE 1647cc 1995ccThats what I need.......a 2L.

2L Turbo would be silly.... i can see it now... The ultimate Campervan. Renault Trafic Autosleeper 2L Turbo........

Nah Just a 2L will give it some pull...

Maybe I didnt explain clearly -

What I meant was that if you get the F1N mounts (or you fabricate some) then you should be able to fit the F8Q engine and box/starter etc etc. from the 19 lock stock and barrel.

Dunno what the situation would be with driveshafts mind you.

If you can fabricate, then you would probably have a much easier job going for a lump that ticks all the boxes AND will physically fit in the space available 'as is' rather than butchering the bulkhead to accommodate the lump you've already bought.

I know the prospect of putting a car back together to move it on again having no doubt spent time and money sourcing, buying, recovering and dismantling the donor car must be pretty soul destroying but it would probably save you a load of hassle in the long run.

Welcome to RR by the way. What was the 'other' Renault forum you which provided you the wrong information out of interest?

Hi mate. Cheers for the welcome. Yes it is a bit of a pain doing all the work to find it wont fit. Its ok. I try not to dwell on silly things... Its more fun to laugh at yourself and call yourself a silly *************. ( Put lots of stars so you can make up what you want ).
Now then can I tell which forum or will I be taken to Court and dragged back and forth by Mods....he he. Only joking Mods.
What annoyed me was NOBODY on the forum said NO! it wont fit.... I know why he told me it would fit. Because I was told when i first bought it that it was a 1.7L I had not done my homework by then so was non the wiser... I posted up something like. Renault Trafic Autosleeper 1.7L Engine help or something like that on a Independant Renault Forum and nobody asked me its age or CC. I think everybody presumed it was a 90s Model. I am sure you can find the post because you are probably a member. Think I am Miniman on there aswell. That may give some clues. The other option i think is possible to find a 2L petrol from that era and fit that for more mpg... Sounds silly but the trafic is well under powered. I would think a larger engine may not struggle so much thus give better MPG...Maybe. Anybody got one lying around they no longer need... Hey Cheeky but sometimes it works. There is one thing. I have a full renault 19 to strip and sell..... Will probably keep the engine and box for a project like Renault 5 G/TDI. Sorry if i talk to much but its a forum at the end of the day...he he. Good idea about the gearbox but I think I may be asking for it on the Insurance if I try to get Insurance on a Trafic which never produced a 2L TDI. I can get the engineers reports sorted no probs but you know what insurance companys are like nowa days.... **************
I love the F8Q engine. I used to own a R19 TurboD and it got hammered all over the UK with trailers on it and Horse box....ect ect. It was my baby. Loved it. Never broke down once in 3 years or failed MOT all it needed when we bought it was a clutch cable... £200 later and three years of abuse and I sold the car for £200 with 6m MOT.... Then I was out on our local roads and drove past it in a hedge with a boyracer........ Stuffed up the Rear.... so that was that... UNECONOMICAL REPAIR.....
So then am I correct they fit a 2L.... Hummm just had a look at the renault Handbook and answered my own question...

847 / C1J 1397cc PETROL
841 / A1M 1647cc PETROL Mine SO IT IS A 1.7L...!!!!
829 / J6R 1995cc PETROL What I need.

NOW THIS IS THE BIT WHICH GETS ME... OK
852 / J8S 2068cc Diesel So this is the one which I had in my J reg Trafic...
8140 / S8U 2445cc Diesel which I presume is the same engine they use in the Master..... So what years did they start to produce the Diesel.... this is getting good.... BTW Cheers for all the help guys...

My Google search say's No F-series engine was fitted to the early Traffic. However. get mount's mad e or sell on the F8Q engine, and try to find a 2.1 Diesel [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douvrin_engine"]Douvrin[/ame] engine from a 18,21,25 might be the way to go. However anything can be done with time and money.

Edit. I'll take it the 2.1 Diesel engine a bore'd 2.0 R21 engine. However to find that out. I too will have to do the homework.

Humm if they never fit it they Wont want to Insure it. If they do it will cost a arm and leg. £200 now fully comp... i think i will have to double that for a conversion motor... Sorry sir I dont have that engine on my SCREEN... So thats them stuffed. If its not on the screen they cant help.
The Question now to me is... Well i have a Autosleeper with the engine out i have the 19 with the engine out and i have done all this for nothing. Now i have the option to go and buy another car or engine to take out and fit... So then i have removed 3 engines and fit one.... I think there is some maths thingy going on there... 3 to 1 !
I think i need to put the old one back in tidy up and get rid... or swap and save myself the hastle. Dont think my dad will allow me to oil his drive anymore. He lives 4 doors away so I get to use his drive... I will be sad to see it go... why did Renault never fit a Turbo Diesel Engine in the first place. Why fit a slow under powered 1.6L single carb unit in a VAN then fill it full of heavy chip board and call it a camper ! Its a BRICK, but i love it anyhow. Need to get a clutch release bearing / thrust race to some.... Phoned Renault Thursday they told me 2 OH ITS THAT OLD WE MAYHAVE TO GET THE MIRCOFISH OUT" I just thought " AND ! ".
Anyhow just about to fing again.....

Chris

If only it was that easy. If I was to have a chrash and they sent out a insurance guy to value the damage and he see its a diesel they just wipe there hands clean of you. The document says petrol but you fill with diesel... Then I have all the expece of paying for all damages to other partys. They take me to court and I go down..... NO TA.
Insurance is the last thing you want to be pissing about with especialy when I have 3 kids and a wife. Alot of the boy racers are slowly finding out. They cant afford to insure there car with bling on so they insure it as the original 1.4L then when they get run into ( NOT SO OFTEN ) or they run into someone else they then find themselfs in court. There has been three cases up here in the local majistraits... (CANT SPELL ) Police pulled them then took car off them because it was not insured under a Conversion / Modification. So when i run into you in my Renault 1.9DTI Trafic and trash your car then you find I am not insured you will be waiting a long time for me to pay it off at a tenner a week.......I Dont mess with Insurance. Its happened to me. Underage driver stolen car....BANG... then loads of visits to police and visits from to find nothing i can do....

Nice one Niel I never knew Wiki had engines ect ect... Found a sole new Clutch relese bearing for the van... £22 + Vat or £60 for a Kit.... The Clutch looks like new so it must have just had a plate at some point in the past.

Am back guys. lost internet for a while and also blew a HDD.
Right I can eat my words boys. At the last min before I said GOING or STAYING I went onto the net and typed in Camper Van Insurace...

Bam ADRIAN FLUX

So i phoned up and asked how much to insure a 1.9 Turbo Diesel Renault Trafic C reg....
So we went through the details and when we got to the Registration....He asked me why I was trying to get insurance for the same vehicle....DOH....! ( LOOKED BAD AT FIRST )
I told him the story and he then said right you need to speak to your insurance company and they can give you a better quote. He did tell me some inside info tho guys.... Keep it below 2L. Told me that the 2L rule works well. He told me that there are less and less insurance companys doing vehicles over 1999cc. So gave details AGAIN and then she told me that it would not affect my policy what so ever.............

I nearly fell off my chair....

So I am now on the lookout for a Renault Trafic MK2 Gearbox.
Now then someone told me that all the parts are off the shelf...well no they arent. Because the parts you may be refering to are for the MK3 or 4 but they never did a 1.9TD in the MK2 van.... BUT.....

You lot can elaborate on it. I think from memory the MK2 had a 1.7petrol and a 2.1N/A Diesel. Well I know they had a 2.1L N/A ( Naturaly Asthmatic ) because I had one and sometimes I used to run it on Parafin. NOT on a public road....OH NO...SIR..
Anyhow that ended in tears.... Injector pump exploded inside out.... DOH... Should have put some new engine oil in the parafin to give it a lubricant.... well i was stupid.. Learnt my lesson. Bio diesel is good. Not care what anybody says about it. I have succesfully run on it for abt 6 years. You do need to change your fuel filter more often tho. But if you buy it from a company who know what they are doing then its clean and very good at its job. I loved the complaints of a chippy.

Anyhow i am waffling again...Doh!

Your turn guys just tell me to shut up.... but hey I am a Licanced Radio operator I have a licence to talk....he he... RF is better tho...

Your turn....I will shut up now...he he...

I dont understand what you're trying to do now.

You're back on the idea of getting the F8Q 1.9 TD engine into your mk1 trafic?

So you're looking for a mk2 trafic 1.7 petrol gearbox to mate to the F8Q so you can fit it in?

I can't be 100% sure but I'd put money on the 1.7 petrol trafic gearbox being a JB series box, ie to all intents and purposes the same as the box you have from the F8Q. But with unsuitable ratios

I think you are getting a bit mixed up Neal..he..

The renault trafic MK1 was a inline setup
The Renault trafic MK2 was inline
but the MK3 was a Transverse... thats the one they fit the 1.9td in...
The box I have is Transverse...

Ah I see now... you think I am after a 1.7L gearbox dam you just said that...

Nope after a Transverse gearbox out of say a
R Espace 2.1 diesel
R 21 2.1L Diesel
Renault trafic MK2

I am sure you understand me now... there are others buy these are the most common...

Now I'm even more confused -

You say the mk1 and mk2 trafic are 'inline' (longitudinal?)

but then you go on to say youre after a transverse box. Including one from a mk2 trafic :?

yup, that is confusing, just sounds like you want what you already have

The other thing that confuses me is that any gearbox that mates up to the bellhousing pattern of the 2.1 diesel (J8S?) wont mate to the F8Q.
