My ph1 #403

Hi Guys

I finally decided to dedicate a thread to my car.
Most of you have probably seen it by now. It is a completely original ph 1. It is in quite good condition, but I have a few projects that I want to do to it. One being fitting an aftermarket exhaust, and also to get the wheels repainted. I also decided to get my brake discs skimmed, and at the same time I decided that I wanted to paint my front calipers, and fit them with AP Racing decals.
I recently made this thread on cliosport. This is my car history so far.

Anyways today I decided to start on the brake refurb. First job was to get the car on jack stands. I looked for tips on this, and it seemed it would be nice to have a "guide" for this, so I made sure to take a lot of pics.

First I made these ramps of plywood to be able to get the jack under the car. They measure around 58 mm in height.

With the car raised on the ramps, i was able to get the Jacks underneath the jacking points on both sides. I used the jacking points on the sills to raise the front onto the jack stands. I just protected the sills with a piece of plywood. Just make sure that the plywood doesn't "tilt" on the sills. Keep the car in gear and with the handbrakepulled when lifting.

I placed the jack stands under the sides of the subframe crossmember, which should be plenty strong for this. But before placing the stands, you will have to remove the front undertray, This is straight forward, it is only fixed with 6 6 mm screws. After this my jack stands slotted in perfectly between the OEM subframe and the Clio V6 only crossmember. Hope this pic makes sense.

With the front supported on jack stands, the rear is quite straight forward. You just have to remove the rear undertray before lifting. This is fitted with eight screws. Please note that there is a screw in the center of the undertray.

I lifted the rearend on the rear part of the crossmember. Use a long piece of wood to spread the load, and to protect the crossmember. I used a piece of wood approx 60 cm long.

Hope this is useful for someone. I feel it is a safe and easy way of getting the car onto jack stands.

I will post the brake progress a little later.

Great work! You certainly saved buying a low entry jack.

And a good guide Ben

Out of curiosity, how come you're skimming the discs? APEC discs are sooooo cheap now it makes way more sense fitting new.

They are so cheap you can basically chuck new ones on when you change pads! I beat the crap out of them on road and track and absolutely no issues , had oem ones crack.

Ok, figured i better upgrade with the progress.
I got my wheels dropped off at the painter this monday, and yesterday i ordered a QuickSilver Super Sports exhaust system. Can't wait to get it.

However last time i the garage, i got the brakes off the car.

I did however only remove the front calipers, as i decided not to paint the rears. The rears are fairly decent, and i decided just to clean them. I did remove the discs all around.

To remove th front calipers a 10 mm allen key is needed. I used one with socket drive.

I am thinking about replacing the caliper bolts. Am i right thinking that they are just normal high tensile 12.9 bolts? Anyone know?

Got the calipers off. They are lovely things, i was quite impressed by their size.

After this i removed the discs, they are just fixed with 2 x 6 mm countersunk bolts. With those removed i tapped the face of hub surface with a hammer, and they came off.
I was thinking about other discs, however i will give these a lick of paint, and use them up. Had no issue with them before putting the car away for winter.

Speaking of painting. I have stripped the calipers down, and am going to mask off the pistons.
I bought VHT high temp caliper paint in glossy black. I also bought VHT high temp clear coat. I read several forums, and alot of guys reccommended this stuff.
I also bought the yellow "AP racing" decals to go on before the clear coat. These arrived today.
Today i was in the garage again. I cleaned up the calipers and degreased them. I also fabricated this stand for painting them.
Only need some M10x1 bungs to seal off all the threads on the calipers. However the QuickSilver purchase has gotten my Paypal account locked.... [smilie=icon_cry.gif]

How would you have lifted the car onto the jackstands if you were to only get the wheels resprayed for a week or so? I'll be doing it in the garage at my work. Don't want to many loose parts laying around.

No complaints on the forum about the APEC discs.

I use these 330mm V6 discs on my 21 Quadra too and they've had the stuffing kicked out of them by Yellow stuff pads (2 sets so far) around tracks, hillclimbs, the 'Ring x 3 and the Alps for a week - ridiculous for the money.

Hmm I really think you need to remove the undertrays front and rear to jack it up properly. ? But it is very easy. Takes maximum 10 mins...

Dont paint the mating faces, or the friction surfaces!

Yeah that is all ready taken care of. Using big washers to mask the mounting surfaces on my paint rig...
Will mask off pistons and friction surfaces too.

Today i made a little more progress. Cleaned up the brake discs and gave them a lick of paint, to make them presentable. Also removed the rear bumper. Ready for the new QuickSilver exhaust.
