Marks RX7 - lets break a rotary.

Work and home life has been a bit manic this last week or so meaning i haven’t had much time on the car and to be honest id lost all motivation after we hit yet another snag.

During the last run up to temp where the goal was to properly bleed the coolant system we found in the logs that the dash power was dropping to zero amps which meant it was intermittently dropping the two main feed pumps plus the 02 sensor. It’s just the way the system architecture works.

I’ve tested a simple fix this morning by added a bulb in the dash circuit meaning it pulls a constant 2amps as seen on last pic - output 15. The permanent fix is to add a resister which the wiring guy is going to do next week for me, I just need to send him the front panel to amend for me.

We are going to do a final test with the car running tomorrow morning.

In other news I’ve had to send the water/meth pump back to Aquamist for testing. Hopefully I’ll get a fixed pump or a new one back this week.

I think you need to stop buying parts from wish.com or aliexpress 🤣

Guess what people ???? Go on have a guess ? What do you think has happened ?

Yes you’ve guessed it, we’ve had another failed part. This time a very expensive calibrated NTK 02 sensor, this is number two. Basically it’s not reading and we believe it’s failed due to condensation based on how it’s installed in the tail pipe. (Wrong angle)

To try and solve this issue and also the easiest way is to use one of these Innovate sensor protectors. Im hopeful this contraption saves me having to get the down pipe bung position changed as this would mean fucking with the thermomet heat wrap causing more inconvenience and cost. I have one on order of the below on order.

In other news the coolant sensor has failed too but this one was a 30 year old OE sensor so not too upset. I have new one with me which arrived today along with the replacement pump from Aquamist.

Next steps are replace coolant temp sensor, buy 02 sensor number 3, fit it with the new protecting bung. Then fit the new water pump and say a little prayer to baby Jesus and Santa Claus that my car is finally ready to be tuned.

Fuck this car 😂

Turns out coolant temp sensor is fine and it’s the plug that is complete shit. The plug doesn’t quite click in meaning the plug can come loose quite easily given the vibration a ported rotary gives it’s no surprise we were seeing the coolant temp drop out of the ECU. I’ve acquired an OE plug to swap out which should solve that issue.

Said plug not quite fitting sensor.

In other news to fix my dash amps dropping we tested with a bulb which drew enough to keep the dash on but when we added resisters as a permanent solution it generated way too much heat, I could actually see smoke coming from the connector which undoubtedly would of ended in fire. (Maybe that would have been for the best ;-) )

So to rectify this issue we needed a permanent device to draw power so settled on the Syvecs WiFi module which basically allows us to connect to the ECU wirelessly. Should be here tomorrow.

In summary, fix coolant temp sensor plug, fit innovate sensor protector, fit 02 sensor, fit new water/meth pump, fit WiFi dongle - job done. (I hope)

Hectic work schedule, shit weather and my 3rd bout of Covid has meant progress has been slow.

Today I fitted the new water/meth pump and added 250psi spring, will need to test this with tuner, fingers crossed we get the pressure we need.

Also fitted the little Syvecs WiFi dongle, this allows me to connect wirelessly to ECU but also add the 0.2 - 0.4amps draw we needed.

Swapped out the water temp sensor plug for a new one that actually clips in nicely to the sensor, I’m going to swap the sensor this weekend also but that means losing coolant, new coolant arrived so can top up.

Fresh 02 sensor now has the correct plug too, need to fit with the above bung.

Not feeling this weather 🥶
