Marks RX7 - lets break a rotary.

As the Renault 5 F4R is drawing to somewhat of a close I decided to pick up a 1993 RX7 FD3S. As it currently stands I am not planning on going too crazy with this but who knows, in the future it might become somewhat of a beast.

It’s a 1993 Jap import, imported into the country in 2005, I’m the 10th owner in that time and the car has covered 95,000 miles.

Here is the spec;
Engine Rebuild at 93,000
New Exedy Clutch
Turbonetics T62-1 Single Turbo Conversion
Battery relocated to the boot
Rota MXR 18's 10j fronts 11j rears
Large Front Mount Intercooler, Custom Hard piping by Pro4m

Greddy Manifold
Greddy Intake Elbow (Very Rare)
Greddy Type R External Wastegate
Greddy Profec B Boost Controller
1650cc Secondary Injectors on a DM Motorsport Fuel Rail
Custom Downpipe
FEED Silenced Mid-pipe
HKS Hi-Power Silent Cat Back exhaust

Before the current turbo and back in 2016 it made 402hp so I think as it stands with the right set up and map it should make a least that, maybe a bit more.

I believe this was around 0.8bar. Plan is to buy a meth injection kit and up boost safely to 1.5bar, I may see 450+ at this point.

I’ve started to make a few changes already, firstly ordered a new Sparco wheel as the current Momo one is appalling, it’s too small and looks shit. I’m going to change the filter for a larger one on a 90 degree 4” elbow too next week.

Love it! Ignore the haters, wankels are great. Do you watch Rob Dahm and Mazzei motorsport on youtube? I so badly want a quad rotor but would settle for a 20b!

I do watch both mate, they’ve both definitely contributed to my recent love of rotaries. I don’t think I’ll ever get to their level though. Mental builds.

this is awesome, so whats it go like?

It goes well, very nimble, sounds awesome. Steering wheel is tiny and shit, the wing is a bit wobbly and not to my liking.

It looks mega in person though, Mazda designed the car so well, it holds up in today’s market of sports cars in my opinion.

I haven’t done many miles as I need to pre-mix two stroke as the oil metering pump has been removed, a good few litres arrived today from Opie.

Will get more miles in this weekend for sure.

My first proper run out this morning ended in what must be typical rotary fashion. I was properly opening it up in all gears at WOT, running 0.9 bar and feeling pretty rapid.

Unfortunately it’s mapped way too rich at WOT, my gauge is showing flat 10s at full boost. I pretty quickly developed a miss fire 20 miles from home, pretty much running on one rotor as far as I could tell, thought I may have damaged it already but upon plug inspection I’m pretty sure I’ve fouled the plugs. I’m going to need to book a remap somewhere to pull some fuel out.

The front rotor plugs are completely black as per pics.

Living the rotary dreams chaps, new plugs on order.

Good and bad news regarding my first experience of RX7s and rotary engine.

My first two subtle modifications have been replacing the horrendous Momo wheel with a nicer looking and slightly larger Sparco wheel. Plus the fitment of a turbo blanket to keep engine temps down a tad.

The bad news is on my first outing yesterday pushing the car hard I’ve damaged the engine. People were not kidding when they said rotaries don’t like det. Long story short the map was complete shite, partly my own fault as I should of had it checked on rollers etc first. Anyway time for a mental rebuild, after only 250 miles I’m addicted lol.

I’m certain that has to be some kind of rotary record In terms of buying car to blowing it up.

Steering wheel look amazing! Miles better than the last one.

What exactly dets on a rotary? I guess the actual rotors ( rather than the much maligned tips? )

Oh baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaals... sorry to hear you've already broke it... Still as they saying goes, onwards and upwards!! I look forwards to learning more about rotaries whilst reading about the rebuild you need to give it!!

Pleased that it's not (yet) broke your heart! :grin.gif:

To be honest I should of known better, time for a bridge port for extra brap brap.

The theory goes 2nd gear at around 6k they change from primary to secondary injectors. Likely they were not up to the job causing lean mixture. Also I’m still on standard coils which is soon to change and they aren’t recommended at the power level.

Ultimately I think poor map, possibly wank injectors plus shite coils equals dead rotor.

Might as well put a cosmo engine in ( 20b ) ? Is that an option

I wish I had that sort of money. This rebuild is likely £2600 plus labour of £750 plus other goodies like coils and possibly ECU. Current Apexi ECU is old hat and has zero safety features. But I do wish a 20B was on the cards.
