Laguna 2 1.9 DCi Cutting Out

The ol faithful £250 Slaguna has served me well for nearly 6 months... Up until yesterday.

Since i've owned it, it's hesitated now and then ever so slightly and put it down to the EGR. Yesterday a couple of times on acceleration i had thick black smoke, then last night the STOP and battery light fIicked up and cut engine power then fired up again... Okaaaay, carried on driving, 5 miles later going round a corner it does it again at about 35mph, but more lights come on the dash, loses power, no power steering, still have lights.... Then cuts back in and warning lights turn off. But after that it's doing it every minute or so, i manage to get the car back home but baffled as to why it's doing it.

I'm now having to use the Clio to get to work which isn't ideal but getting me out of a situation. Can anyone pont me in the right direction

@CRM ?

Ok, so it lasted all of 2 days. The only consolation being it cut out pulling into a car park and not out on the main road, since then it hasn't been able to fire into life. It will crank over all day but not start, the breakdown company sent someone out to try and fix it first but to no avail. He said that there is fuel to the injectors but there's not power to all 4 injectors to pump the diesel into the bores. He didn't have a diagnostics machine on board so it was towed to a mates garage and left, we plugged in his Snap On diag machine and for some strange reason it picks up the ABS section, other sections but not the engine management section which would show any fault codes.

I fitted a new crank shaft sensor yesterday to rule that out but it's still just cranking not firing up, the battery is now at the point of draining where it's been turned over so many times. I'll buy the cheapo E Bay code reader tonight, my mechanic mate won't answer his phone so I'm turning to you guys for ideas before having to call either another mechanic or auto electrician to have a look at it.

Shame your not closer bud, got Clip running now

It's pi55ing me off I just want it back on the road so I can stop using the Clio everyday. The crankshaft sensor I bought was from Eurocarparts, I'm wondering whether it's the fact it's not a decent OE sensor. Obviously identical in looks but quality could be miles apart.

could be, odd that the main ecu couldnt be spoken to though. have you checked the main fuses? even my android app would talk to my dci ecu

We had another Snap on code reader on it the week before and that picked up various stored codes, we cleared them and drove it round the block to which it did come back with 1 relating to glow plugs. Strange the 2nd code reader (exactly the same reader) wouldn't work, I've ordered the E Bay cheapie code reader tonight. The breakdown guy tested all the fuses in the engine bay and said they were fine, he did say it was strange that all 4 injectors weren't seeing power.

Could it be as simple as the injection relay being faulty?

Are the injectors switched earth? If so can you run an independent power supply in to see if it fires?

It could be but I really know very little in the way of electrical diagnostics. I have a multimeter, that's about as far as it goes for me. The OBD code reader will be with me tomorrow so maybe that might help

Ok so the E Bay OBD 2 scanner arrived so i'm at the Laguna now. Plugged in and going through the motions it's repeatedly saying 'Linking Error!' a bit of a coincidence that the Snap On code reader wouldn't link up and now this OBD code reader won't link up to the car. I've just tried it on the Clio 182 and it works fine.

Any suggestions?

Outside of a gallon of petrol and a box of matches, no not really mate :( Can you find a car of the same model to check the interface works with your scanner? If it does it could be ECU related I guess.

oh yeah! renault dci OBD isn't actually OBD until after 2005 or was it 2003
but now my brain is working........its clip or a really good scanner that actually wants to talk to it!

I had this on a Vel Satis once when my laptop was dead and couldn't use clip! took me a few days to work it out

its got something to do with the EU and crap like that

I've had a Snap On code reader work on it 2 weeks ago, it showed a few stored faults to which we cleared. Tried the same reader last week a second time and nothing. It's an 02 plate DCi, the cheapie OBD reader worked on my 54 plate 182. I'm pretty sure the chap looking at it tomorrow has CLIP so fingers crossed

Definitely ECU related, had the guy come over after work and the ECU is getting absolutely nothing. Immobiliser light is permanently on, no EML light so Renault CLIP can't read it either. He wants to get an ECU pin out (whatever that means) the trouble is he can't get back for ages but happy for someone to have a look in between.
