Pretty much 3 years since starting this thread, I finally get to the end of stage 1 I swapped the engine and took it on track and it survived...mostly



Gearbox has some very strange behaviour, wont select 2nd/4th at speeds over 30/60mph when going up through the gears. Will select them fine if I pop it into 3rd/5th for a split second and go down into them at any speeds and at slow speeds its all fine (tried in pitlane and both selected fine sub 40mph)

At first I thought something was blocking the selectors as there were loose wires potentially fouling it, but once cable tied out way issue remains. With someone under the bonnet and me putting it into 2/4th we confirmed the cables were all still in holders and throwing the selectors as far as they could externally so presumably this is something horrible gone on internally.

Will drop the gearbox oil and see how sparkly it is I guess...

Sounds like a synchro issue to me.

Well...I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be that colour or consistency. Was lovely and clear when it went in and most of it looked clear coming out but presented with this at end. Not a magnetic plug but could see quite a few sparkly bits but no huge chunks

Either way I think it's time to get the box off and investigate for my own curiosity and fix/swap.

Whilst watching a completely unrelated YouTube video on supercavitating submarine propellors I had a thought...what if my issues were oil related? Specifically a lack of it.

Thinking back when I drained it originally, I simply put it all back in that came out. I didnt fill it up till it overflowed out the filler and checking the amount I have drained out now, its barely 2L of the 3L+ its supposed to be.

What are the chances of lack of oil would do this, perhaps the lack of oil just going super bubbly and doing funky stuff (and in turn churning up all the sediment/rust/whatever) came out of it thats now settled?


A lovely layer of sediment in the bottom, but very very very little metallic stuff.
