You may have seen this car pop up a while back but I wanted to start a new thread on a more positive note! it seems this quadra has been owned by a few members so feel free to add any extra pics and info to help with the history.
A quick refresh, I was looking for a quadra and came across this one. Dried stored but needing tlc and didn't seem too much of a project.

I bought it blind and after much faffing it was delivered.
After an inspection it needed a lot more than I was looking to take on for a personal project, it's been patched and painted in the past and ideally in need of a restoration, so it been pushed to the side for a while.

With a bit more space and spare time I've brought the quadra back in for a strip down and to see what's involved.
I had already removed the engine and a few items to keep them clean in storage.

You nearly broke my browser with you recent posting @Haz! Top job mate.
Are the plans still a freshen up , or has it gone past that stage now ?

Well I try :ag:
I think it's had too many freshen ups in the past and and too far gone so in need of a full restoration now. The plan is to strip it right back and start again. Sort out all the rot, under seal, paintjob and refurb/replace everything. As close to showroom as possible, oe+.

As one of the prior custodians of this car I am shocked at how bad this has become. When I sold it to Craig (and he fitted a new engine due to the original one being shagged) it was a pretty straight car. Alright, that was 12 years ago or so and it seems to have suffered the fast/cheap car syndrome of no-one wanting to spend proper money on it to sort it. Glad to see she's getting a second lease on life.

It already had a Ph2 2WD ECU on the car when I bought it all that time ago from a guy in Ipswich. It then had oil pressure issues and chewed through 2 turbos (and a clutch hydraulic system) before I sold it to Craig.

I don't think anyone would question my affinity for 21's mate, but if that were mine i'd send it to the crusher unless it was maybe my own car that i've owned 17-odd years. Thats really not in a good way. I do, however, applaud the fact you're going to have a crack at it!

"Do you see the beast?...This should present no significant problems" (Trainspotting)

Looks better than I thought, if anyone can sort it out you can fella

It does look ok on top, but that's the bit most see and do make the effort. Underneath is to the discretion of those doing the job. An attempt has been made with por15 or the likes just the prep prior is what has let it down, same for most of the running gear.
It still has the same ecu. Unsure if the chip will swap over to a quadra ecu? I assume so.

I agree Dave, it's worse than the tungy I've just chopped up for scrap! But they are getting rare and I'm sure others aren't much better. The history within the club makes it worthwhile saving. Cue sourcing parts! Haha.

I think it looks worse than it is, just a lot of surface rust. We'll see!

Cheers, or stupid??

Isn't the main difference between a quadra ecu and a fwd one that the fwd has boost limiter in 1st (& 2nd?)? If so, the chipped ecu will likely have that removed and won't be any different than a chipped quadra ecu? But @DaveL485 is the expert on these things :)

The only difference in the Quadra ECU's is that it doesnt limit boost in first gear like the 2wd...this rarely works anyway as most dont even have the amal valve any more.

The main electronics differences are between Dizzy and Dizzyless engines, and then in the 2wd/Quadra ABS systems which are very different...the Quadra system adds a 5th sensor for G-force (sits on top of the transmission tunnel) and fault diagnosis, which you activate by bridging 2 pins in the XR25 port and watch the ABS light flash out codes, kinda like morse code.

I've had a little time to poke around more to see what's involved.
It seems most previous repairs are either really old or not done to last, plus the areas that haven't been attempted.
Unsure how oe it is going to be when finished so took some pics of the stickers just in case.

Decided it was best to start chopping out the existing repairs and inspect. Started on the ns leg

Round the os IMG_8979.webp
IMG_8980.webp IMG_8982.webp
IMG_8983.webp IMG_8984.webp

Thought I'd tackle this with a decent section
IMG_8985.webp

Deciding how much leg to remove to replace the subframe mount, only to notice the ph1 I've cut up for sections has a different style mount
IMG_8981.webp

So poked around the sills instead. Os
IMG_8986.webp IMG_8987.webp
And then the ns
IMG_8989.webp

Jacking point/floor repair
IMG_8990.webp
Then started on the inside
IMG_8991.webp IMG_8992.webp
Sills and jacking points were as expected but the front end is going to need a lot more work fabricating and de rusting!

This one is going to need a lot of time not to mention parts to make it a really nice example so I thought I'd see what's been hoarded to work out what has to be sourced, and a bit of motivation! The interior is mostly there, just a few better items required which I've got in storage. More so for new/upgrade bits.
So I got digging!

Some pace intercoolers with new bobbins

Good door seals
IMG_9013.webp

Strut and front abs wiring
IMG_9014.webp

Subframe bushes
IMG_9015.webp

A few brackets, grubby but not rusty
IMG_9016.webp

Some gaskets
IMG_9018.webp

Belts
IMG_9017.webp

These need more work but a bit more bling
IMG_9012.webp

That's a few bits less to worry about.
If anyone has anything stashed away I'm looking for :
Donor shell?
Sills,
Jacking points,
Rear suspension arm bushes and bolts,
Front subframe and bolts,
Exhaust system - stainless,

More to be added I'm sure!
