Is the PH2 worth double a PH1?

I came into it wanting a ph2 with no doubt.... I got a message from a forum owner asking if I would consider a mk1 mars. Fell in love and BOOM, would I like a mk2? Yes! But I'd miss the charm of my ph1, driven both and I must admit I love the rawness of the mk1, if it was a daily mk2 would be better for me! But is it worth double? No as I'd sell mine for 20k..... :tumble:

I have toyed with the idea of a ph1 as they are ridiculously cheap at the minute, surely they can't go any lower?!?!
Would enable me to keep some funds for other cars possibly a meg R26.R
My biggest worry is I have already owned my ultimate Vee & in reality whatever ph2 I buy next probably wont live up to my old Acid.
Maybe a ph1 would tick some boxes another ph2 can't?

I don't believe for one second however that phase ones will be worth more than phase 2's in 20 years time.

That's afair enough opinion Wayne but why not? Fact is pretty much every 1st edition ends up being worth more regardless if the later model/s are more refined or better equiped.

Side note. This subject really doesn't bother me. I'm putting a bloody audi engine in the back of mine for fcuk sake so prices don't effect my ownership in anyway shape or form! I bought the thing to drive and enjoy. Something I feel many owners don't do enough of but we all enjoy different parts of motoring so that's fine. I love both cars equally and should I have not spent the money I have on mine, I could have got a very nice ph2. Why didn't I??? The handling is barely different from 1 to 2 and let's all be honest, we here of just as many ph2 owners spinning there cars as ph1's in normal rain soaked britain. Secondly, I would have felt I'd paid 6 grand on a black dashboard and 18 inch wheels which when driving at night, you can't see either of anyway! Lol Also, whilst following a ph1 on a blast through france I'd be thinking, "he is having just as much fun as me if not more" Lol

100% agree with you Brett; like yours mine will be worth f-all as well, as everyone knows originality is what will really count in the years to come.

Although I've got a ph1, I'm not a ph1 fanboy, if I had a ph2 as well, which I seriously considered, I would still feel that ph1 will ultimately be more valuable. It's the original, Genesis, numero uno, the beginning, the real McCoy. See Lotus Exige, Ford Escort, Mini, Gti, Beetle etc etc.

^Well maybe f'all in £££ but both will be worth a fortune in kudos points!

I've got a foot in both camps (although I've got a highly-molested Mk I).

I take on board all the Mini and E-type arguments - but I honestly perceive the Mk II Vee to be the 'Evo' version. Let's face it: TWR did a great job, but Dieppe needed to raise the bar to address some criticism of the original.

In my opinion buying a mk1 and using the cash saved to buy tasty weight saving upgrades like recaros kws janspeed exhausts and a mk2 gearbox makes the mk1 better than a mk2 any day - especially since its 80kg lighter to start with :p

Hong Kong mk1s have air con though btw - we need it with summer 35c+ and 90% humidity

We have air con as well, people are whining about the lack of climate control [cmilie=iconcheers.gif] ;) ;)

IIRC you cant see anything driving a mk1 at night cause the headlights are so bad  ;)

Lmao! Ill give you that they look better on the car but using them aren't any better. I actually hate the lights on my ph2 172. I think they are crap. I'm not keen on the way they have a clear line of where they start and end. Ph1 projectors aren't bad at all.

You've overstepped the mark here mate.

You forgot to mention the rear mounted aerial

Brett, I can't really explain it other than gut instinct but iirc they made less ph2's than ph1's so technically they are the rarer version. The ph2 production numbers were more scattered over a variety of colours making production numbers per specific colour rarer. I think in 20 years time for example a lunar grey ph2 will be worth a lot of more than an Iceburg ph1. (I'm taking in general terms of course, not a 200 mile prestine ph1 that's never seen the light of day) average condition comparison. :approve:

I agree Wayne. A ph2 lunar will definatly be worth more than pretty much any ph1 (not including illiad) but then a lunar won't be fetching typical ph2 money either. Rarity wise ph1's will be less seen for sure. Just by attending our outings and events you will see far less ph1's.

No. Clearly ph1's are utter shite. The interiors are pure gash, they fall apart, they kill people when pulling anything more than 0.002g around a corners, they drive like a tdi's. Sit in a ph2 and you immediatly feel like your behind the wheel of a top spec supercar. Let's face it, if you haven't got climate control, auto xenon headlights and auto wipers in a drivers car then you might aswell drive an Austin 7.

In all honesty, owning a ph1 vee and a ph2 172 I wouldn't pay 6k on average more for a ph2 because of the different dash and 1 inch bigger wheels. Neither car is very plush inside especially when placed next to normal rep mobiles. Both share the same god awfull seats, the same door cards and both have utter crap steering wheels. They should be looked upon as drivers cars and who the hell worries about the fact the interior isn't at a constant perfect 19*c or not.

And yes, I am defending the ph1 as I don't believe its anywhere near half the car.
Hi all my dad has got an austin 7 box 1933 and like the vee mk 1 its an engine bolted to 4 wheels and I love the fact its just so raw. The vee that is not the austin 7 as its just shit lol god I cant wait to inherit that some day lol jimm

I agree with that, if I wasn't lucky enough to have 2 cars and could only have 1 id have a mk2 probably, but I couldn't afford a mk2 as a second car, for me though I think paying for the extras is kind of like putting make up on a porn star, looks great but no one will notice [smilie=icon_eek.gif] lol

Perfect analogy. As a ph1 owner, I prefere chicks that don't need make up. Take a nice natural to bed and wake up the next morning and you pat yourself on the back. Take a tarted up, high maintenance one to bed, which usually costs more in bottles of wine and drinks etc and you wonder why the fcuk you bothered when you look across your pillow at 7am. Pmsl Ph2's are just tarted up towie slags with indeed a greater choice of facial skin colour! Lol

Tw4t! . . . . . . . I don't like you anymore Wayne.

It took an expensive ring and proposal too get some the other night! You know me all too well
