How (not) to make your Dauphine Handle

The Engine is off to the Dyno on Tues Wish me luck!!
Emptied the toybox this morning to tidy up.............
The Dauph really is lower than a snake's ass in a wagon rut @paule78 's 8 will look the biz once the front tyres and ride heights are sorted
No issues to report on the Dauph it was as I put it away 7 months ago it primed and fired right up no issues (which was nice)
With the cabinet reshuffled it was time to put it all back
We are off to a track day at Forrestburn hillclimb next week-end I didn't want any last minute issues
Back to the grind...............

Been Quiet as been in Head down Arse up mode for the last three days
The Gearcutters still have not finished the Crownwheel and Pinion for the Alpine. Their 4-6 week window expired on the 14th April, so we are now at week 11 with no sign. This car is going to the festival of speed and that's not the kind of date you break, so I have reassembled it with its damaged crownwheel. Not what we wanted , but no choice now
The sidemounts are a work of art, thinking about an upgrade for the Dauph......
This is as far as I can get it and still be liftable
Then It will come back and I will have to do it all over again, which is a pain for me and a Nightmare for the Owner........

I still keep fighting with old Renault transaxles through all the ups and downs. A recent job was to correct an issue causing concern on a R5/R8 hybrid in an Alpine . Some of these hybrids have an issue with not staying in 5th gear. They do not all do it its like the 3rd/4th issue on the R17 close ratio gears on the R5/R16 mainshaft, some need the 3/4 fork modified some don't .
I had been doing some measuring and the conclusion is that the 5th detent is about 3mm off centre which results in the detent actually disengaging the gear, rather than holding it in
The Mk1 solution has been to weld up the detent and reshape the detent on 5th speed
With the detent welded up the reshaping can begin
I forgot to photograph the finishing of the process, but it seems to be working well and is now pulling the gear in rather than ejecting it.
That done it was a simple job to renew oilseals and grease seals on the axle couplings which went well until I got to the last on and found an unknown assasin had stripped the M10 hole in the casing and had bade a poor job of making a repair stud from an M12 bolt which had also stripped in the case
only thing for it was to use an M14 bolt and make an M14 x M10 conversion stud and fit that
Done and dusted
Ready to go home more soon............

Some of you will know that I suffered a bit of misfortune a couple of weeks back, or more exactly my Son made a bit of a schoolboy Error at Forrestburn selecting 1st gear instead of third going over a crest Right. This resulted in the car spinning , but the stone wall on the side of the track arrested it's progress. I suppose its lucky it didn't end up down the 6 foot ditch on the other side!
However it now looks like this
Thankfully the damage does not extend to the front crossmember, so there is no suspension damage and all the wheels are where they were pre-incident. Good job or it would be getting used as his Coffin
I have been on the Renault old boy network and have managed to get everything I need for repairs. I now need to figure out how to get some panels (inner wing, front panel and spare wheel door ) back from the Netherlands, which may be entertaining in the present political conditions .
If anyone is going and could bring the bits back , I'll cover their costs or if anybody has any good ideas let me know
Finally a word of thanks to Young Mr. Turnell @Turbell for suggesting a guy who suggested a guy who found the bits......
In other news the Dyno guy phoned today to say he was getting through his work backlog as well as me (which isn't well at all) and he hopes to get onto it next week

You are right enough. You can fix anything with enough time. The car had been repaired, by assassins unknown at this corner already and not too well, so I think new bits will make it better than before, Which is what I always try to do, though I frequently fail............

That’s always my aim, even on the worst cars if you make it a little better each time you work on it, it should become a great car.
Have a Car at work my boss has bought but it needs so much. Shame as it’s one of 6, we now have 2 at work and they look great but being a modsports type car it’s not eligible for much. Would Love to rebuild it See if I can find the pic of the other one my Boss has had for years.

Another old transaxle of mine arrived the other day. I had a bit of a job identifying it, as it was one of 2 originals I built way back before I did this type of thing. Persons unknown have had it to bits and made a few errors putting it back together and missed a bit out completely, but there is no damage, so Rebuild it is.
It is a rare R5/R17/R8 hybrid with close ratios and a Quaife diff, so pretty much the holy grail of RER transaxles

I raided the federal reserve of bits for a new pinion bearing which has to be pressed off and the new one back on , I hate this as there is a lot of force required with glassy hard bits , however it is done .
Next up it is 1st gear and it's stopkey
The polish on the hub teeth shows it's been getting a hard time, so the weak spring causing the issue has been changed.
Then it's the 1st Baulk ring and 1st/2nd hub centre with it's stopkey
Next its the 1/2 outer hub and 2nd baulk ring
Then 2nd speed and it's stopkey
3rd speed and Baulk ring next. Nice big chunky rings on these close ratio sets , built for abuse.
As these gears and mainshaft were never meant to be together some chicanery is required to get it all fitting this is a modified 2nd speed stopkey being used to hold 3rd in place
It's an absolute pisser to fit in there
Locker bar fitted and 3rd/4th hub goes on next, following on the strength theme there are no piddly blocker bars to break but 10mm ball bearings to engage the rings, built for strength.
Then 4th speed with the original R5 shim washer ground down to carry the end of 4th and provide running clearance
Finally ad the bearing and 5th speed and there you have it. A close ratio set on an R5 mainshaft ready to go back in

Or just impressively daft ! Draw your own conclusions.. Just got an e-mail from Canada, a guy who wishes me to cut up the mainshaft for his S1 Europa , so he can change axle ratio, do-able in theory if the different crownwheels are the same diameters??Impressive work

Rob who I work with worked at Ricardo developing and building gearboxes. Including the Valkyrie gearbox from development to around the 30th box produced. They still call him now when they have issues.
Will be getting him to teach me how to build my box..
