Help needed with De-Collector piping...

Ashy B

New Member
Right then I need abit of help and some brains I can pick at regarding some custom pipe work to completely take out my collector pipe,

I've been doing lots of homework on here before I posted so I know whats involved & its Matts help I could do with if your willing my friend as I see you have a collector pipe for sale which i desperatly need some measurements off.

I Managed to pick up a Quicksilver OMG from ADDZ the weekend :approve: & my intentions when i brought my Vee was to get her as loud as possible with out switching on the emmisions lights and failing m.o.t's etc..

Now I want to keep my collector pipe so cutting the secondary cats out is a no go for me & also dont want to cut the flared ends off the collector either So I started looking into a custom job,

I can get all the stainless pipework made up no probs but i need to make a flange to mate up to the existing flanges on the original down pipes... SO what I really need is someone to be willing to measure up the flange on a collector pipe for me so I can draw a template up and get one made in stainless, I would use my own collector but I use my Vee everyday & can't take her off the road :(

So if Anybody (or Matt) can help me on this it would be ace!

Also apologies for the long winded post to get to the point but I thought other people would be very interested in this mod too so if I can give as much detail as possible it may help fellow members out,

So if the project turns out to be viable and fairly cheap maybe James would let me put a scale drawing in the knowledge base where members could simply print off the flange template for this mod?

I also spoke to Quicksilver direct today and the very helpful guy on the phone said if i took a complete collector to them they are pretty sure they could make me something for around the £400 mark... So that may be an option for some of you guys if you only use your Vee as a second car & can remove your untouched collector,

Im going to try and see if i can get something made cheaper than that first but if I get stuck then i may do that myself & figure a way to get to work etc for a while! Also then quicksilver will have all the info they need then to make these pipes commercially for all... but I doubt they will be cheap though :s

I was told by the company (longlife exhausts) I'm going to that you take your car in, they assess your needs and then make up the relevant pipework (plus anything extra to make it fit) and then slot it on the car. Can you not take it in when you're not using the car (weekend?) and they can draw you up a design?

I think Matt mentioned he got his decat pipework done for about £280 somewhere. £400 seems a bit steep...

Hi Ash,

Yep, got mine for £280 from a company called Pipeworx - Sorry being abit dim here where do u want me to take the measurements from?

I'll defo get them this weekend and post pics of original collector for you mate,

Cheers,

Matt.

Thanks for getting in touch dude! What I need to make is a stainless flange to replicate the flange on the collector pipe... its the flange that bolts to the downpipe flange with the 8 studs in it,

So if you could I need measured....

The size of the rectangle flange all the way round,
The diameter of the exhaust input holes & their position on the flange,
The position of the 8 studs & their diameter too (or nut size ;) )

Would that be possible for you mate? As I said I really would do it myself but I just cant have my car off the road as its my only mode of transport so I'm trying to get all the pieces ready for the exhaust company I'm using to simply bend the pipe & to weld on the flange & formed backbox ends together which I'm trying to get done,

Would it be possible to let me the know the diameter of the exhaust holes first please Matt so I know what inside diameter size pipe to use, I can then go to a tube end forming place I've managed to find for the backbox flared ends, I believe you cut them off a collector you have didn't you?

Massive thanks again,

Ash

I've spoken to afew companies that do custom pipe work and the one problem I keep getting is the ends that the backbox fits onto, they are female ends on the collector pipe which i've finally managed to find the name of.. there are known as Butt ends or Bead ends in the tube end forming world... and the male part which is on the standard backbox & my Quicksilver & Matts Orbisound is know as a Flare end,

Well its the Butt or Bead end which is the problem end thats why they tend to cut off the ones on the collector which is a no no for me as I want to keep everything I take off my Vee complete,

The next issue I have is the flange, Im keeping my original downpies so its a little trickier than just 2 round exhaust flanges as I need to make up a new rectangle downpipe flange, the company I'm using said if I could sort the flange out they could do the rest as they don't stock pieces of plate also its going to be the most time consuming part so if I can do that myself they are only going to charge me £100 for the removal of my old system, all the pipework & re-fit!

The guy at the exhaust company said he might be able to find the tube ends I need to mate up to my backbox but I thought I would look for them too as I'm doing the flange & plus the more knowledge I learn myself the more I can share with anybody else wanting this mod done, ;)

Hi,

Yes no worries mate will look and measure over the weekend for you.

One thing I will say Ash, is that the dashboard light WILL be on ;)

Why? Are you joking hence the wink? The sensors are after the precats but before the collector box cats. As such it might fail the MOT (not sure if anyone has tested this) but the engine will be none the wiser (hence no lights).

Unless you have a full decat! ;)

My dashboard light came on when I changed my back box [smilie=icon_eek.gif]. It's only a light. Doesn't bother me. After a while you get used to it. If it really bothers you yank the fuse or remove the bulb...

honestly, after just changing the backbox? Shouldn't have done!!

Yes mate I agree with Matt, it shouldn't do that, It may well be your lambda sensor(s) telling you they are on the way out & need changing,

I've spoken to people & read lots of info on guys who put aftermarket back boxes on their Vee AND rip the secondary cats out their collector too and no light has come on, :s

HI, Just changed my standard rear box to the cat back jan-speed one . Absolute piece of p155 to change and it sounds great with an induction so i am very happy. The hardest part was trying to get the bumper off with those end bolts in the corner. No light on the dash either !! Also managed to get the square mesh that fits in the rear bumper so it looks finished off now instead of that crappy chicken wire :)

Sorry not had chance to measure dimensions yet mate as not been to car this weekend. I'll get to it this week and sort it out. I've got a spare collector box for sale if you're interested too?

no i got it from janspeed direct a couple of months ago . that is a good price if you want one !! the collector box had two small holes in it which i didnt notice untill it was off. so glad i went for the cat back :)

I think it's down to the decibel level of the Quicksilver between 2000rpm and 3000rpm. The light used to flick on and off occasionally and then I changed the seats and never got round to fitting the airbag resistors. So now it's on all the time!! It doesn't bother me to be honest.

don't want to worry you mate but I had the quicksilver ss on that car and no light came/off with it.

I expect it'll explode at any minute then

I used to have a similar problem with my 182s ABS sensor. The light would come on and the traction control (which the ABS is an integral part of) would automatically switch off. So I'd proceed to thrash the car with no electronic safety net. Was really rather fun. Never turned the traction control off unless the car "chose" to!!

I took it back to Renault countless times about it and all they did was reset it and let me on my way. They never did get to the bottom of the problem. I think it was the car's way of saying "drive me harder gayboy"!!!

The light is on permanently now until I fit airbag resistors so I don't even know if the intermitent flashing is even a problem now!! I haven't noticed any driveability issues at all so I don't think there's a fault. I'll get Renault to have a look at it as part of this year's service though.

Nice one Matey appreciate it hugely if you can, I'll gladly sort you a drink out for your time Matt I'd never expect anything for free :approve: Or if your unsure of taking the measurments would you let me pop up and take a template off it?

Regarding the collector is that the one you have put up on here and on the bay with the end cut off? If it was it did cross my mind to buy it but I thought either way I have to find some ends to weld on as I don't want to cut my ends off mine so I may aswell go for a full custom job if i'm sourcing new ends uknow,

Its the reason why I asked you for the measuments help as I knew you had one off a Vee ;)
