Gearbox Oil...

Dave, the UN1's are renault finest. Please dont compare them with JB and JC's, there sh*te !

JC's aren't as good as JB's but as far as gearboxes go I think they have a great feel, a good gate and they're tough as nails. Granted the UN series are superior but in comparison to some of the total ****E from other manufacturers that was around in the JB era its a way, way better box.

Renaults' finest indeed, probably because 1st and 2nd gear were the only thing made in house, the rest of the box was made by Hewland.

Kitcar boys are using the box out of the Skoda Superbs/Audi A6 as well now aren't they?

renault performance cars are on there way to use them 2 Lee, totaly wrong imho but who i'm i to say that. Ive got the re-inforced JC5 014 (williams) box with solid diffrings and sport spider (short box) gears but still not convinced about the strenght on the box. And the prices for parts are totaly absurd, check LSD prices, pffffff. An LSD for the PK6 (clioV6) is half price against the one for the JB/JC boxes.

ow, and they cant handle torque (at all)

Has anyone on here fitted a LSD to the UN1?

Yes!!! Me, I've got a nice new Quaife one in my brand new gearbox and Jo, the people who supplied it were the ones who told me that bit of info.....1st and 2nd were Renaults' own gears the rest were supplied by Hewland, which explains why 1st and 2nd are forever having trouble and Hewland are as strong as a Kerb stone

A diesel gearbox that can't handle torque......crazy eh, I know a few have thrown the odd diff

I know first hand that those boxes do like to munch 3rd gear as I've got 9 of them here.

actually I think the box/gears is/are made by borg warner according to some technical documents I've read

but as Lee said 1st 2nd are Renaults own

Hmmmm Chris Cole at Mach 1 Transmissions tells me otherwise but its not really important 25years on lol

Renault no longer make 1st and 2nd.....so we're all stuffed but actually we're not cos someone else is (in France) and they should be ready by end of the year, they are being trialled shortly in a UK car, if they prove to be hardy, notchy crunching will be a thing of the past.

there is a company in Holland that make the gears (aftermarket) for the UN1. And if someone is interested, got a brandnew set syncros and gearbearings, also brandnew gearselectors (from renault).

Oh you biatch lol did you buy direct from quaife? Good price?
I'd love to do mine but suspension is next thing to do so it will have to wait a couple of months!

Biatch indeed lol.....I was lucky, I got the last one left, the next run of them will be in a few months apparently.
Cost me ?1000 mate and ITS NOT A DIRECT REPLACEMENT. Its all a little bit misleading, indications are that its an LSD for a UN1 and NOT for a 21 Turbo, therefore as things stand the 21 Turbo driveshafts dont fit properly pmsl

Its a 27spline diff so they match up in that respect but they dont sleeve far enough to seal the box oil so.....currently my only options are to machine the diff itself to accept the 21 shafts or change my hubs to Ford ones and spend ???'s on Cossie shafts and inner shaft adaptors....this means wheels, discs etc

I have to laugh or I'll cry, its all part of development eh?

The shafts are ?200+ each
27spline adaptors to suit the Ford shafts are ?198 a pair
Ford hubs are more money, adapting shock absorber, balljoint etc to suit is more money

The Compbrake/AP calipers are ?370 and I already have wheels/hubs to suit all of that ;)

Elite gearboxes will do a plated diff that 100% fits for HALF the price of a Quaife Helical ATB one

Wouldn't a plated diff be a better option?

If you do end up goin that route I have got some spare driveshafts and hubs!

Fair play tho for having a go at something not so straight foward!

I had a bag of sand spare and thought sod it, I wanna be the only one with one of them Quaife things :nerd:
A plated diff would be more predictable methinks......

I didnt enter it 'having a go at something not straight forward' - I was told it was plug and play by Chris@Mach1, its only with further investigation that Quaife dont make a diff for the 21, they make one for the gearbox. Big DIFFerence lol

The more I think about the more I think I'll be wanting money back....Im not buying shafts, adaptors and hubs and with a lifetime warranty I wont be angle grinding the splines on the diff to make the 21 shafts sleeve further ;)

Thanks for offer on bits, I found a hub in my boiler cupboard (as u do) and have an inner joint too.

Oh right I see, so it was sold to you as a direct replacement then? Sod that then, I'd want my money back as they've miss sold you something?!

Haha in your airing cupboard?? Random lol
