Fuel pump fun, anyone?

Wits-end

New Member

Hi;
After standing for two weeks in the open, my 'S' reg Megane wouldn't fire.
The fuel light was on so I put in 10 litres from cans I had for the very purpose, but still no fire. Checked plugs (OK), then noticed a pathetic whining from the fuel pump which stopped as the guage reached '1/4 full'.
How do I
1; locate the pump?
2; check that fuel is getting to the injectors?
3; know when to give up and call the garage?
Thanks to anyone who can spare me any further low back pain!

1 - Lift the rear seats and peer under the hole in floor. The pump and sender unit are one single item on the Megane.

2 - Remove the fuel "flow" line... if it pisses fuel out then the line is presurised and fuel is getting to the injectors. If it comes off but there's nothing more than a dribble the pump isn't working.

NOTE: Are you sure the injectors are firing?

3 - NEVER do this unless you're gagging for a wallet raping!

I'm assuming that the car was working just fine prior to it being stood for two weeks?

Fuel pump fun (2)

Thanks for that.
Before your reply, I located the two fuel pipe unions to the injector assembly, disconnected one and turned the engine over. There was not the flood of fuel I anticipated so I suspect that the noise from the pump (which I hadn't heard berore) may indicate that it's struggling.
Previous problems were with the immobiliser, resolved by (the local Renault specialist) replacing one of the sealed computer units from a wreck. Otherwise, starting was always first or second turn.
Since my evening's fishing is now comprehensively kyboshed, I'm going to watch the rugby instead, let my aching back have a rest and return to the little darling in the morning.
This all reminds me of my lovely old Citroen GS estate................happy hours cursing, skinning knuckles, replacing the drive shaft oil seals from a pit.............I was thirty years younger mind!
I'll get the seats out and have a butcher's at the pump. How can I check the injectors are firing?
