5 GT Turbo F Variant Engine Conversions

Mark Davis

Brapmaster extraordinaire
As per title. Is there a thread explaining all the various options ? With work required and costs? Can't find anything via search.

If not who can point out what's required ? Best variants ? Parts required ?

I've discussed this in the past on various Facebook sites but hard to find the information months on.

I'd like to know about engine mounting, best block/head combo ? gearbox, manifolds etc.

TIA

I don't know mate. I need educating big time as I don't even know which engine comes out of what car, pros and cons vs each.

Displacement of each, better potential for power. Driveshaft requirements and all that jazz.

400-450hp would be ample.

I need someone to school me starting with the basics. I want to try and price it up (roughly)

I dont think the 6 speed box's will fit in a 5 chassis. im led to believe they require chassis work on a clio 2. I think most start with a 172 engine and box, they do fit in a 5, then turbo them. Stock will take 230 to 250 before they start to pop. If you were going to do it thats the route i would take but slap pistons and rods in before boosting (300+bhp potential)

You are then on to the next weakest link, the gearbox, rebuilt with a diff you might get some power through it but they arnt renowned for their strength, flip side is they are cheap as chips.

Other option maybe the VW gearbox conversion that the clio/Scoff goes for, i think scoff has one in his 5 so that might be a real option for strength in yours.

Driveshafts im sure are a mix match of renault unless you got VW box as above.

Another more gearbox friendly option might be to rotrex supercharge the 172 engine. Mine ran 280bhp all day long, forged versions were running 340+bhp (same as most high boost turbo clios) but with very linear power delivery. That in an 850kg tin box would be an absolute animal.

Do you know which VW gearbox he uses @Adey ?

Whichever route I went I'd find an engine that needs a rebuild and whack in decent internals straight off to future proof.

id pick a route first, drop scoff an email and see where he would go with a build. getting the meg engine in isnt easy as it doesnt mount up to a 5 speed box easily (check out my 197 engine i was building)
