does my camshaft phasers need replacing? mk2

The engine runs fine and pulls ok. Its just on start up for a spli second you get a clacking rattling sound which sounds terminal and then goes. Also, it comes back again once you switch the engine off and let it rest for say 15 mins. This time though its more of a tapping sound which disappears when you blip the throttle. It could be tappets but I dont think you would get that extreme clacking sound on start up for a split second.

God knows.

Ok some good info and since my car is at the dealers getting coils fixed i will ask them to check the solenoid including the 12v test

As an fyi ... defo not tappets cos i changed all 24 of them thinking that was the problem 2 years ago!

Wasnt too big a deal because i was having the engine out anyways for a gearbox change and cambelt and managed to get a set of tappets for 200 quid

I get the noise but only occassionally, sounds like a washing machine clacking on a spin at idle

Its been like that for years but not too worried as sounds like simple part to change if its constant

To be honest even if it was one tappet that was failing it would no way cause the amount of noise mine makes on start up. The problem with this noise comes when you want to sell the car. Would you buy a vee that sounds like a bag nails on start up? I would not. Mine has been like it for ages and never got any worse. I here of some where the noise remains for over 5 mins from start up. Now that would worry me! I might pop into the stealers tomorrow on the way to work and get a price of some new solenoids.

Just ordered the dephaser solenoid. Back order from France! Easy job to do. One 10mm bolt and pull it from the engine.

You know there's two of them right?

Yes...about two hours later when I left the stealers and looked back at this post. Anyway, rang them and bought the other. Back order from france. Speaking to the Reno mechanic there he said they are always dealing with de-phaser problems on some of the Clio range. He also said that sometimes the solenoids get dirty and the wire gauze gets blocked and needs cleaning on the solenoids. Also, lack of oil changes are normally the failure for de-phaser pulley problems.

These solenoids are camshaft oil control solenoids. They control the oil going to the de-phaser pulleys etc. Hopefully these will remedy the problem.

did this sort your problem out?

Well...I don't know as I have just rang Reno garage to find out where the feck they are? Back order from France. I ordered something from Hong Kong the other month to a company that never spoke English and my order cam on time a week later. So would you think dealing with Reno in France would be a lot easier? It has now been 3 weeks.
