does my camshaft phasers need replacing? mk2

Im not happy after just spending £1800 for for a gearbox rebuild, new clutch, service, and new spring @sg motosport my car on start up sounds dreadful, its ruttling, it used to rattle for about 2 seconds then go away, now its there for about 10mins after driving off. ive been reading on the net its common on renaults, but no mention of clio v6,

what price am i looking at to get this sorted, and how big it the problem?
feeling pretty pissed off, it was in the garage for 3weeks and ive only had it 3months.
i will ring scott tomorrow for a price.

Sounds typically like the dual mass flywheel. these start with a rattle then it goes away, normally.
another reason for my thoughts is if you have had a new clutch maybe it was disturbed in some way causing premature failure. what parts were replaced?

just clutch and clutch slave cylinder, and gearbox rebuild. i dont think its the dual mass, because sometime you can start the car and it make a rattle, then turn the car off and back on it again it will go away for about a minute.

obviously its your car and you know the rattle but what you also described points that way. have you checked that all the exhausts are still tight, seeing as they probably been off, also engine mounts and gbox mounts.

Simple thing would be to take it back to Scott. He's certainly not going to tell you to bugger off. Chances are its probably something simple and easy to rectify yet makes a nasty racket.

As Brett says.

Just give Scott a shout. He's a honourable guy, with a good reputation for a reason. Cars can go wrong after being worked on for a multitude of reasons.. Even F1 teams are victims to it.
I'm sure Scott will be equally disappointed that something's not quite right with your car.

Keep us posted! :)

why didn't i think of that? :approve:

Because you're a knowledgeable and helpful guy.. I,on the other hand.. whilst trying to be helpful, know shit all about engines and rely on specialists like Scott :p

spoke to scott who has confirmed it is a camshaft phaser problem, just waiting for a price now.
will update

Please let me know the price...mine are doing the same....its becoming more of a problem with vees!

But don't you need to do engine out and cambelts as well ti change the dephasers as well?

Mine have rattled for a few years but didn't affect performance and also notice using silkolene helps vs other oils

You are right I think. How much is the Silkolene? What grade do you use?

ah ok, i must have misread the above link which is a bit of a pain in the arse. If they start to rattle does it affect the engine in anyway?

Can i come in with a question here?
is it the phase controllers that sit on the end of the inlet cams, if so its a belt off job (top end) or is it the solenoids that control the "de phasers" that sit on the top, easy job?
to me it sounds like the mechanical part is kaput not the electrical part.
how many miles has this car done, and again with talk of oils / silkoline, what oil have you been using?
hopefully with a bit of useful data from problems like this the forum will become the best tool in the box.

Ive used a few oils, shell, millers, elf but come back to the silkolene again

Less noise than previously and feesl a bit freed up as well

As for the dephasers been told they all rattle at some point and its the mechanical part which means engine and cambelt which ill wait till the next service

Heres the link to the oil 5w40 - believe member "oilman" here does some deals for uk folks (im based in hk so no luck for me) in the group offers section

car is going in Friday, i will tell you work need removing and replacing after and cost.
