Cylinder Head

Good Morning all!

Today I put the head gasket in place, and started to follow the procedure on the Haynes manual.

I did:
Stage 1 - Angle-Tighten all bolts by 100degreese
Stage 2 - Wait at least 3 minutes
Stage 3 - Slacken fully bolts 1 and 2
Stage 4 - Tighten bolts 1 and 2 to a torque setting of 20Nm/15 lbf ft
Stage 5 - Angle-Tighten bolts 1 and 2 by 110degreese

Do I really need to tighten the bolts this much?? I already had a bad expeiance with the inlet manifold bolts!

And by the way, I am using the torque wrench and angle-tightening tool.

Any advice please?

well my autodata thingy says the same thing mate so it should be safe enough, that said i would wait for one or two more opinions on it

Yeah, tried auto data aswell. its written in short, but basically the same.

It is totally necessary, both to compress the gasket down and get the right amount of stretch on the bolts. Also to ensure the clamping force is uniform across the whole head.

the first step is wrong, you need to do a certain torque first then angle tighten it. The first step shoudl have been 20nm then angle tighten.

Angle tightenign is the proper way but if you can't be bothered guessing or making/using the tool you can just torque em down with the torque wrench.

or buy a digital snap-on torque wrench!!! or borrow your bosses like me because im cool in that way !!!

Is that the TechAngle one where you set the torque and angle and then just pull on it till it beeps?

I'd love one of those bad boys, big bucks though for something you use once in a blue moon.

yes thats the one and you can pull and go back for another pull without losing the angle that it was on !!!!! well once in a blue moon no if you work on cars every day lol

My main job is sales (I.T.), second job is my shop (I.T.), third job is spending my little free time at the garage. Can`t borrow one from the boss lol.

I like tools, and even if I dont use the torque wrench much, its good to know what available and better if they are in hand.
