Coils

Ive read through and see trophy coils seem to be a good idea.

The only reason iam looking is my car exhaust sounds a bit more throaty and the vee is a tad sluggish.

Ive never had a coil go before and even after searching im not sure what the difinitive answer is.

What happens, what noises, what issues with driving and is it easy to tell, or am i being paranoid?

sorry to start another thread for coils but sifting through thread after thread its tedium.

i had a ht lead come off on my 5 gt turbo, and i noticed then but boy was that bad on 3 cylinders is it much alike?

thanks guys just dunno what iam looking for [smilie=icon_cry.gif]

I have had a total of five coils go on my 255, believe me you will know when it happens. There's loads of info on here to help with diagnosing which one and changing them. I changed to Trophy coils in January and the car has been running fine since so i am hopeful my woes are over. Its an expensive exersize and involves some tapping and wiring, and maybe more difficult on the 230 than the 255, but in the long run it may save a ruined Cat system. I would definitely advise picking up a spare coil as the AA and RAC may say they carry clio coils but they never have the right ones for a vee (in my experience).

I have read a lot about listening for a change in engine note to determine which coil has failed, but i also found that the dodgy one smells burnt when removed.

you lucky devil Miguel i've had 7 on mine so far so doing pretty well

it just sounds like a dodgy subaru mate probably best way to describe it

thanks for the replys, just spoken to renault about somthing else, but inquired about coils being coverd, i was told they are coverd. ile buy a spare one or two, incase somthing happens. but until my 12 month warrenty runs out ile leave it to renault.

Trophey coils sound like hard work :(

I wasn't aware the trophy coils needed more work that just wiring.

What makes these coils so much better/reliable?

Presumably they were specified for the trophy cars and i guess they are much harder wearing. There seems to be much more too them than the 'basic' sagem coils. Before i bought them i spoke to Scott at SG and he confirmed that they should prove a long term solution to the failures (assuming something else wasn't causing the coils to fry) -so far, so good.

I wouldn't say the coils were a nightmare to fit, the holes that have to be tapped are already pre-drilled on the top of the engine, this is easy but care has to be taken not to get swarf anywhere nasty. The wiring is basically a case of changing the connectors over and soldering them, this is simple too but time consuming.
