Coil Gone - Trophy Coils now installed!

Thanks Russo. The connectors do appear to be different. I will get back to Migny Courses and check on the connectors.

I know its too late now but i have spares of these that have been tested, for reference i am in nottm area if anyone gets stuck near here.

So these might be just about a direct replacement for the standard coils?

For the price that they're being offered - I didn't 't think they'd be anything other than.
Whether they have better longevity is anyone's guess...

Spike, do you mean Trophy coils or the OEM item?

They are not just direct replacements - they are the real thing as on trophys which Scott confirmed from photos I sent him :)

It's unbelievae but true - Migny courses are selling them at way below original price that's why I bought 2 sets - apparently he bought the trophy stock from the old factory as they were closing down including other trophy parts though he never sent the list of other trophy bits when we asked him

I've got the write up on my computer at work but its 8mb ! Working out how to chop it up otherwise if I send it out my company will think I'm a wikileaker lol!

Strongly recommend get the connectors as well as the coils - this is what delayed mine been sent before as he was struggling to find them but he must now have a source

I have emailed him asking about the connectors - my Vee is booked in for the 9th, so hope I manage to get the connectors by then.

Would really like to have a look at the write up you have - perhaps you could break it into seprate documents (MS Word or PDF), or upload it to Google Drive?

Take a wild guess!

#002 now has 6 brand new Trophy Coils installed. As usual, Scott did a superb job. Enjoyed the 4 and a bit hours I spent in his workshop chatting with Scott and his father about Vees, cars in general and other stuff, whilst Scott got on and did the job. Thank you Scott.

As Wongy too noticed, the engine seems to run much smoother, but like him I did not notice any difference in the engine's character, possibly because I have the TTV lightweight flywheel and a remap to smooth out the throttle response. However, the main reason for going this route was not to suffer any unreliability issues like I did before the trip to Kimbolton. Scott says that he has never seen a Trophy Coil fail, and that includes coils installed in the Dragon 2000 Trophy (tarmac) rally car.

I seriously suggest anybody who can get a set to get one (now), but don't bother about the connectors - Scott can get them, so for Euro 179 for a set of 6 Trophy Coils, including shipping, it really is a no brainer. However, if you are not doing this your self you need to factor in about 2-3 hours of labour.

Here are some pictures of the coils in the process of being installed and the finished article - note that a second hole needs to be tapped (see 2nd photo), but Scott has all the correct tools and even used stainless steel hex bolts:

As you say Dulan a no-brainer, fit and forget upgrade. Just the sheer size difference between the Trophy coils vs the road cars should set the alarm bells ringing!!

Like you and Wongy, I can't say I noticed the difference, but then again mine has so many other tweaks it's hard to single out the effect of any one thing! Once it's ECU and mapping time the beefed up ignition system will no doubt come into it's own. 8)

Interesting, would a group buy be possible?

How much was it all in Dulan? I'm right in saying Mk1/2 share the same coils?

I am not sure a group buy will be any cheaper, and since they are quite bulky (and heavy), postage within the UK may mean you may end up paying more, if say one person places the order and then has to post sets of 6 to each person who wanted a set. As it is it costs under Euro 30 per coil to have it shipped to your home.

The total price I paid was Euro 179.40 for a set of 6 Trophy Coils including Tax and Shipping to the UK (Greater London postcode). One needs to allow a few quid for bank charges, as it needs to be a bank transfer, and the amount in Sterling is of course dependent on the spot rate you get from your bank for the £/Euro exchange rate at the time of the transaction.

Get in touch with Scott (SG Motorsports) re the connectors, or you can order them from Migny Courses at around Euro 10 per connector (you need to specifically request them). The communication needs to be in French, so if you don't speak French Google Translate works fine.

The coils can be installed in both Phase 1 & 2 Vees. Points to note - whoever installs these coils needs to have the correct tools to tap a second hole for the second bolt (see second photo above), and if you don't do it yourself allow for 2-3 hours of labour.

Awesome upgrade Dulan, as said above this is a no brainer and saves driving around with spare coils and tools in the boot!

I think I might invest in a set of these, although Ive been lucky enough so far not to experience a coil failure, you never know whats around the corner!

Indeed Dan. It really is a no brainer if you want peace of mind and not have to mess about with changing coils.

Really easy transaction - better still when you can get a few spare just in case as well. They may not last forever - apparently Migny Courses had bought all (or most) of the Trophy parts from Dieppe when production ended.

Eliminating one of the few reliability issues related the V6 power plant was my objective for getting a set installed...........
