Clio Trophy number 54 aka T.Turbo

Sorry for the lack of updates on the build as not got round to it yet, but promise i will soon.
April 2023 update

Not touched the trophy since September last year. Ive been cranking the engine over occasionally by hand just incase instead of starting it up, as not keen on starting engines up without using them as the egts never get high enough without driving, and oil never gets properly up to temp.

Anyway topped up battery a few weeks ago and connected it and it fired straight up no dramas. I was going to take it for a shot round the block but checked mot and had just expired then it started pissing down so left it at that.

Went down my local garage yesterday to book it in for mot and they had a load of spots today so booked it in.

Was looking rather barn find so give it a snowfoam and rinse.

GTechniq coating still doing the business.

Beadage.

Quick blow dry, no contact at all.

No issues under the bonnet. Done the usual leak checks after a small layup, all good.

Interior could do with a little spruce up but ran out of time on my 'dinner hour' when working from home.

Anyway battery back on, fired straight up. Took the long way round for mot to warm it up fully. Passed no dramas mot tester always says its the cleanest clio 2 hes ever seen.

Stuck some fresh tesco 99 in on the way back as it was almost on reserve. Everything was good on the ecumaster live data on display and i had an epic 1999 essential mix by Scott Bond playing on the alpine. Seemed rude not to enjoy it a little longer, so went the long way back home via a nice few miles of dual carriageway to stretch its legs a little.

Kept boost pressure on wastegate 8psi/276hp as i wanted to monitor afr and other essentials, and it felt absolutely rapid as ive not driven anything fast for ages. The engine revs willingly and with the 197 vvt giving full scope of advance the turbo is all in around 3800 rpm, and it smoothly puts the power down.

The car drives so tight and feels absolutely planted. The gripper diff is agressive and just lays the power in exiting roundabouts.

i sometimes get asked why i have all these cars sat about 90% of the time and not on the road over winter. The answer is always the same, even if i use them once a year it absolutely relights the flame. It brought a massive grin to my face on a dull day and im absolutely dying from the worst man flu so made a shitty day good.

Anyway at that point teams was ringing off the hook on my workphone so had to cut the fun a little short and get back to work before they missed me

So now mot is done, the work can commence, as per every other old renault it has a small list of jobs, or improvements to be done very soon.

Thanks for reading!!

Fuelled up and ready for journey.

Typically mad hot day around 29-30degrees which doesnt bother the engine as it runs cool in the low 80deg coolant range on the move. Driver proper overheating however with no ac!!

165 miles done to the airbnb. Big posh digs.

No more pics of it as i was too busy catching up with everyone. Travelled back home after the show, pissed down late afternoon so it needs cleaning again. Apart from that all good no issues to report. Had boost wound up to 14psi on way back and its mega. Squats and goes on 4th gear roll!

Worked out real time mpg and its averaged 35mpg. Thats with giving it some on the way back and stuck in loads of traffic on the way there. The bosch 980cc injectors are great with good mapping from Chris @ Efi.

Will be time to fit new clutch soon. Over and out for now!

After a year of doing nothing with the Trophy due to hating the clutch, ive made an effort to get it sorted.

For starters, The optima red top battery had seen better days and it cranked slow last time it was started so it had to go. Ordered a new one and fitted.

Next job was clutch swap. The helix 6 paddle is going in the bin for a twin plate ttv organic which i have in stock.

Cars shuffled about so loads of room in the garage.

Front up.

Should see a bit more progress this week.

Fingers 🤞 new clutch makes for a nicer driving experience

Current one too on/off or a dont skip legs days at the gym 😜

On the vx220 the helix 6 paddle was not too bad compared to other 'upgrade' options but you had to change driving style a bit

Car is looking super clean still in a super clean garage......one day I will have this 😂😂😂

I'm done with paddle clutches, horrible! Just fitted one that came with the black phase 1 21, engagement is horrid below 2000rpm and its halved the clutch pedal travel too, yuk. Needs a thinner diameter master cylinder, but I aint doing it lol

The helix wasnt really too on/off, it was so heavy it was on the verge of popping the concentric slave, Haswell popped 2x slaves in 3000 miles when he had it. Also the clutch did not really work properly as was dragging at high rpm. Dogshit really and to top it off it was giving me severe knee pain if changing gear lots, just hated driving it to be fair. In the bin it goes before i need a knee replacement😆

Im also avoiding paddle clutches where possible. They serve a purpose but awful for street driving and ruins the whole experience. I have an old ap 4 paddle in the extra and its savage, unfortunately 200mm clutch size denotes that i need that kind of plate to handle required power levels. I think its almost getting to the end of its useable life so prob look at less harsh options in the future, as i have a 215mm flywheel here.

Solid 4 hours done today.

Engine and box dropped straight down and gearbox off.
20250415_143333.jpg

No oil leaks suprisingly
20250415_143337.jpg

Ttv smf with twin organic plate fitted using a cut off ndo spline to line up both plates.
20250415_151628.jpg

Flywheel lock in place whilst torquing all bolts.
20250415_151801.jpg

New luk concentric slave fitted.
20250415_153659.jpg

New bushes fitted to gear selector as it was a bit tight. The new bushes were even tighter than the ones i removed so sent the 10.5mm reamer through. All good now.

Back in the hole.

Bled the clutch up to check it was all working as intended before refitting more parts. I pre filled the concentric slave before fitting to save lots of hassle when bleeding as these mk2 meg setups can be a pig to do. This worked excellent and had a good pedal straight away with minimal hassle. The clutch feels much better than the old helix, its heavier than stock but not knee breaker.

Also flushed all the brake fluid for fresh rbf600 whilst there, as well overdue.

Back on tomorrow.
