Cabby clio has been done a few times jr, saw a good load of pics floating about the internet, i'd love to do it but I really dont think i'd be capable. What fails do you anticipate neal? I'd like a heads up for what fails I should expect, I dont see why there should be fails if the job is done right
jesus now you prob jinxed me, itll prob end up going in lungthways or something now, my plan is to make a template of the hole in the donor to start with, that should ensure i get the size right, lots of measuring will be involved to make sure the sunroof ends up in the right place, im all nervous about doing it now but i am quite determined
Remember the guy who plumbed NOS directly into his cam cover thread that crops up every now and then?
Or the guy who painted his brakes, including discs all over?
An irishman DIY fitting a sunroof, this has the potential to be the next net sensation.
In all seriousness mate, if you have a complete sunroofed clio to copy the aperture from and take the relvant bits from, it should be a fairly straightforward job.
HOWEVER even undisturbed factory fit clio sunroofs normally leak like a sieve, chances of retro fitting one and it sealing properly - slim to none.
Still, if you like being rained on inside the car, go for it
well now that you mention it i am a big fan of that... im incredibly sceptical about doing this now but i dont feel like i can back down from the challenge of it.
yep the donor car is there so ill remove all the bits from that that i need and make a template of the sunroof hole, i relly do hope this goes well so i can shit inside the hats of all the naysayers, that said if it goes wrong therell just be a nega dose of explosive depression to deal with...
or that lad who polished his ports by throwing sand into the engine, or the mustang that was flushed by replacing the oil with water and driving her on...
the way i see it is that car will stop with me, you wouldnt get more than 150 for it here these days so if adding the sunroof drops the value of the car or anything that wonty be an issue, and it will never have a taller driver than me so headroom shouldnt be an issue, dont worry ill get lots and lots of pics and a detailed step by step of this latest part of the beagles life...
i may need to "re motivate" myself during the course of the project though as im not filled with much confidence (anymore)
so anyhoo. will there be strenghtening of the roof required or is the sunroof model literally just a standard clio with a hole in it
just a clio roof with a hole. Like the push open 19's.
They were often just a dealer fit job thats why they look shite and are in fact just shite in general.
I would safely bet that 99% of 16v owners etc on here would happily get rid of the sunroof for just a plain roof, extra head room, quieter, also losing all that ridiculous weight from the worst place would help as well.
My old black hatch had no sunroof and that ph2 chammy i was meant to get but RedRT messed up the bidding (he was to get the green one and I was having the blue one) had no sunroof.
The biggest issue these days for the 19 owners is finding a 19 with no sunroof to get the headlining from. Otherwise you could remove the sunroof and do what the mk2 astra boys do.
what do they do chris? surely there wouldnt be much weight in the little pop up sunroof from the clio would their? also i dont really mind, this car definitely aint about performance, the 1.2 engine is just dead so i dont mind adding a small bit more weight etc... yeah the donor for maxi was a sunroof-less 19 16v wasnt it, there really must not have been many made
yeah, the 19's are quite a bit of weight i must admit.
still, i say go for Larry mate, if its what you want do it, just remember to double check, triple check and even quadruple check EVERYTHING before cutting the roof, good luck chap, at least you're asking all the right questions beforehand and so knowing what you're getting into
thanks baz, i have a good feeling about this, everything will be checked and re checked before chopping, ill make up a template and all based on the original car...
while i like the advice chris i would say this to be one of the rare occasions your advice may not be that great...
yeah i had a spare sunroof from a 16v here and it did weigh a hell of a lot
All I can say is, if Renault can't get a sunroof to seal right. you've got no chance, Yes Renault got there faults. but if there can't with billions of budget.you've got no chance. and TBH i like my shitey 1.2Clio RL, as it is. Because I know you can get a better car later.
That's my inspiration right there pete, succeed where renault failed... I actually have grown to love the little clio, it's a fun little car, no pep at all but a good honest car
I've Got quite lucky with my previous factory fitted sunroofs as none have leaked but I gotta ask, the question, was it the actual sun roofs themselves that leaked or was it around them due to shit seals or what?
well installing the unit itself i can definitely get right and sealed, if the sunroof itself leaks thats another problem altogether but sure ill cross that bridge when i come to it
