Clio Clio dci bargain daily driver

Brigsy

Media Mogul. Instagram legend.
Been sniffing about for a clio for a while to replace my current whip. I fancied a 182 but cant be bothered with the massive road tax and low mpg on short runs (got the van and the megane for that) was looking for an early sundance yellow but they are rare, the couple i seen for sale were cheap yet miles away so started looking at other colours.

Que viewing a couple of cheapy's off gumtree that turned out to be total bags of shite which was not surprising to be honest as most of the clio's are cheap yet hammered. Went to view an orange extreme in darlington and it looked OK in the pics, when we got near it it looked rough as old boots so drove past and did not stop. I liked the colour though very similar to inferno orange. So anyway kept looking and a dci came up for sale for £100 5 miles away from me. I was not going to bother looking as i thought it needed too much work but @Sheryl_O convinced me it was worth a punt.

Turns out Shez knows the lad who owns it - the car had been laid up for a bit as he had been given another focus to replace it. Had a quick look in the dark, looked pretty grubby yet straight however few issues 120k miles - alternator belt was snapped due to seized alternator due to standing, no number plates as he had took his private plate off, leaking sunroof, engine a bit chuggy on idle & brakes not fantastic basic stuff etc. Lots of receipts, he paid £1800 in 2013 for it and had spent loads on it over last couple of years but got pissed off as the local renault specialist had taken his eyes out and done some substandard work. Asked him what he would take for it and £80 and he chucked in a newish pioneer mp3 cd player, even had 3/4 of a tank of diesel. Just took a punt at that amount as it was basically free so squared him up did not even test drive.

Got some plates made up and fitted on it and drove it back on battery power 5 miles which it done no issues. Noticed the engine started up straight away & ran pretty sweet when fully warmed up and the car drove well plenty of power, brakes passable handbrake was high. First job was attempt to free the alternator off, cracked it off with a load of plus gas & stihlsons. Fan belt on and boshed it in for mot which it flew through. Taxed for £30 for the year we are fully road legal at less than £200.

First job was resealing the sunroof as the headlining was pissy wet and evidence of wet seats etc. Fairly simple fix, the original seal is poor and the sunroof needs resealing to the roof. Took it off and used double glazing tape so free fix.20151217_105957.webp

Next job was to sort out the rough idle, gearstick was flapping all over the place and i noticed an injector seal was chuffing on number 2 cylinder as a load of black sludge around it and the engine sounded ticky. Ordered a top engine mount and dogbone from gsf £35 and fitted a new injector sealing washer which has pretty much sorted the issue - engine sounds lovely and quiet now. Whilst i was there i cleaned the egr and boost pipes out etc easy job. I then replaced the rear brake shoes and a brake cylinder as one was weeping, brakes sorted. I then changed the oil for shell helix 5/40 and a new purflux filter. The oil filter was on mega tight i assume it had not been changed for a long time (genuine renault filter) had to really flog it off.

The rear exhaust mount had pretty much collapsed. I could not believe the price for it (£25ish from memory for genuine) and it looked shite so i chopped an old poly exhaust rubber up and forced it in tight to the metal part of the mount job done.

With most of the snagging done i turned my hand to the bodywork. First thing was to sort out the front drivers side headlamp as it was going yellow, passenver side looked ok pretty new. I wet sanded it with 800 grit, followed by 1200 & 1500, then used autosol as i have ran out of cutting compound. Came up pretty sweet.

As bought

800 Grit

1500 Grit ( i did wonder if this would ever look OK at this point as no buffer lol)

Job done after Autosol. Coated with collinite to protect
20151217_151310.webp

The outside was grubby but pretty straight, bonnet is rusty along the front edge and needs replacing and half the splitter is missing off the bumper. Give it a good scrub to get the mould off - followed by clay bar to get loads of tar off the front arches. Had to work fast due to short daylight hours so give it a coat of Autoglym SRP to fill in some swirls and a single coat of Collinite 476s all done in 2 hours. Not had chance to restore the black trims yet still on the to do list/ @Sheryl_O on the interior clean (needs a wet vac to finish - this weeks job) but came up well really.

Fantastic work @Brigsy!! Just shows there are a few little gems out there that just need a little TLC to return to rude health!! I'm sure after a few more weeks of PMT love and attention she'll do you right for many years to come!!

Looks a cracking little car!! :)

Cheers Steve (y) there are some nice little cars out there for nothing at the moment if your prepared to do a little bit of graft. I think its due to the low price of scrap £25 a ton around here - when it was £300 a ton you could never find stuff like this as it went straight across the weighbridge but at the moment ebay/gumtree etc are full of stuff like this. The previous owner was going to scrap it but they wanted money to take it away! from what i gather the average person just chucks a cheapo car away when a few basic repairs are needed. Granted the repair bill could be astronomical if you got a garage to do the work.

The main reason for buying it was to utilise the freshly powdercoated williams rims i have in the garage though :D

Todays jobs - no pics as grafting

Drivers side window did not work when i got the car, i promptly give the switch a whack and it sprang to life working fine. Until yesterday night when i put the window down and it stuck down:rolleyes: checked out the switch and it seemed ok as well as wiring etc so i assumed the regulator was dead. I then pulled the doorcard off and stripped down the motor which was in fair condition with some burning to the commutator. The brushes were ok, cleaned it all up and refitted. Still no worky so pulled the switch apart which revealed once decent current was across the micro switches it was arcing out all over the place. So went to the scrapyard and got a switch and fixed all that fecking about for nothing however the motor works superb now.

I also picked up a release handle and cable for the tilt on the passenger seat and a minty gearknob, few daft bits spare wheel holder etc all for a tenner. The boss was in the yard so had to pay, the lads usually give me the small bits for free, fitted and job jobbed. So easy to work on.

Other news i have been looking to swap insurance over. Sadly my current insurance want an extra ton to swap over for last 6 months of the policy. Quotes are coming in for a new policy at £300-400 which is ridiculous for a low powered car, its basically the same as insuring a 182o_O. My current whip 307 hdi is £200 a year to insure and its a higher insurance group, i have nigh on ten years NCB & mid 30's so should be loads cheaper. The car is not on the book so no idea why its coming in high. Unsure whether to move it on or not yet? Going to think about it for a few days and go from there.

Half of the front splitter is missing so ordered a replica splitter off ebay £12 new. I had the feeling that it was going to be shite but you never know. After a weeks wait from latvia this POS turns up at least 70mm too short on the n/s. Money back straight away when i sent them pics. Its not even snapped dodgy mould.

In other news i had ten mins spare so scrubbed the front & back seats..came up nice. Going to wet vac the carpet in the next couple of days.

Been looking for a bonnet for the clio for the last couple of weeks as the original bonnet is absolutey rotten. Its the only panel on the car with any rust and its rotten on the front edge - on the back edges where the hinges inside and out. Its that bad @Sheryl_O pushed her finger through the back the other day!

With the amount of clios breaking on ebay and gumtree i thought it would be easy to find a matching bonnet in D33 Orange malaga to replace it with to tidy up the front end. After looking for one for a few weeks (looking and messaging many clio breakers) and only finding one that was crash damaged in the same colour i came to the conclusion that the colour is not that common and i would need to get one painted. Anyway done a bit of searching on the local breakers yards online, i looked at the local u - pull it yard in york to get a cheap bonnet and upon searching i seen this breaking. Winner?

So i look at the location and its in fecking Edinburgh! I rang the place up to find out if it had a bonnet - lady was fairly unhelpful and said the car is still there but no idea if its got a bonnet or not:confused: so anyway i thought its not too far (360mile round trip) feck it i will take a gamble as its not a lot of fuel just time. Roadtrip! Filled the trusty steed 307 with £40 worth of derv and set off with the mrs riding shotgun and a memory stick full of biggie/tupac/nwa.

Set off at 8am today and after a nice smooth drive to Scotland we arrived at the yard 11:30am. FB_IMG_1451510504687.webp Its pissing down at this point typically so im thinking if the bonnet is shite any colour will do. Went in and found the car in the middle of 61 other clio's (yard is massive) and the bonnet is up. I can only imagine loads of scrapyard dents and scratches/rust etc- put bonnet down to see what its like and its mint, could not believe it. Grabbed a splitter and exchanged £30 for the lot and we are back on our way! Home by 5pm no worries and only used £30 worth of fuel so nice little result and a day out as bored shitless so WIN20151230_170654.webp
Hopefully get it fitted tomorrow as nowhere else to put it:D in other news i have ordered air/derv/pollen filters from gsf with the 35% off so only cost £30. Also have cleaned the full interior with a wet vac and its come up lovely (no pics ran out of light). Swapping the insurance over soon as i have got a decent quote finally.

So lets tally up the total again
£279
£10 for random scrappy parts the other day (window switches etc)
£30 for bonnet & splitter (not including derv as i fancied a ride out)

New total £319.

Bonnet fitting today after yesterdays epic roadtrip, straight on the car as i had no where to put it :D

The eagle eyed of you lot might have noticed i have not posted many front end shots of the car. This was due to the epic amount of rust on the bonnet. I have no idea how one panel on the car could become so rusty with the others totally rust free. Initially i thought the car had been fitted with another aftermarket bonnet but it appears to be the original as it has renault stickers dated 2004 on the underside. It was that bad when you shut the bonnet rust flakes were falling off, Rust stains can be seen on the grill. Its pretty grim to be honest.

With that POS removed fitted the new bonnet. Its on as found no cleaning or polishing yet but im sure you will agree its a 100% improvement. The colour match is pretty decent too, on some pics it looks like its out but it just seems to be the way the light hits the colour. When you go round the car every panel seems to do this to be honest. Should come up lovely with a bit of tlc though.20151231_132423.webp 20151231_132431.webp 20151231_133035.webp
Still got the splitter to clean up and fit. My filters turned up from GSF - genuine purflux. I had the airfilter and diesel filter changed in less than 5 mins, so easy to work on.20151231_131833.webp

The airfilter was pretty grim and airbox had leaves and various other shite in - the car seems to run better, makes less asthmatic noises on boost:D Less than an hrs work in total so happy days.

In other news i have been given a full 182 bodykit (bumpers, wings etc) for free. Not interested in making it into a sport replica to be honest as i just like tidy standard looking cars not replica's but i fancy fitting the honeycomb upper grill to my bumper. We will see what condition it is in when it turns up:)

Is it a 65 or an 80bhp version?

65hp version seems to go quite well. I have swapped my insurance over and have used it a little bit, returns 60mpg easy enough with normal driving. What boost pressure do these run? I swear i seen 19lbs on the torque app (who knows how accurate it is lol)
