As you know my mechanical knowledge ain't squat but one thing I hear a lot with the vee and more power is controlling the heat element. What's your plans for "cold air in" and "hot out out" ?
Ok. This is one of the challenges without doubt. If I were going balls out race car style then it wouldn't be too difficult. It's doing it subtly that is tricky.
1.... Luckily, the twin turbocharged Audi engine was created to work in a very tight environment so the turbo's are situated right back, above the driveshafts. This will stop them diluting the cool air from the side pods which will have fans permanently switched on.
2..... The single MAF sensor and large amount of pipework associated with it will be deleted. This will enable the engine to breath straight from the side pods.
3.....I'm going to have 2 fans and ducts either side of the gearbox pulling air from the top of the engine bay and exhausting through my modified undertray.
4.....I'm also going to sit the number plate 25-30mm away from the boot and cut out a hole slightly smaller than a standard plate. With 2 more small fans fitted behind the mesh filled hole inside the car on the boot, it'll vent a good amount of heat emitted by the heat wrapped exhaust. None of these on their own probably do much but working all together should do.
There will be plenty of other things as well but they are some of the more involved things apart from the second radiator in the front for the chargecoolers.
Got a few bits today so the gearbox will be sitting in position by the end of tomorrow. While myself and dad are doing that, Blake is going to remove my interior and detail the Audi lump ready for the big heave hoe next week. Just need a set of M12 x 1.75mm bellhousing bolts of different lengths and the motor will be set for its first initial fitment. Once its in and all measurements triple checked it'll be removed for its cambelt change. It'll also need a few houses made for the a/c and pas. This will be a case of have reno unions one end and audi's at the other. I'll try and get a few piccies up tomorrow evening.
Had a very productive day today. Myself and Blake fully cleaned and polshed the engine bay and I have to say it looks great and definatly ready for a new engine. The gearbox is nearly in its final position. In the end I have had to resort to a little surgery just below the boot latch. Blake has took some pics so I'll put them up tomorrow.
First of all, we hauled the 01e gearbox into the car so we could see whats what. It was then a case of making decisions of what needs what doing to get the the transaxle as far back as possible. Initial signs were great and the gearbox very nearly fit with zero body modifications. However, the main casing is 10mm too tall to fit the whole way back. This meant I had to cut a section out below the boot latch which seems to add little or no strength to the back end as there are a few 2x2 box sections going from left to right. Yes these pictures look drastic but it'll all be tidied once the paintwork is done.
Out came the tools...
After the dreaded no return point. Bingo! It fits perfectly.
Fingers crossed, I'm pretty sure there will be zero body modifications needed for the engine. Just need 2 12mm plates welded to the chassis legs in the engine bay. Job done.
Will look better once the subframe is cleaned and sprayed for sure. I have been in 2 minds whether or no to keep the bumpers middle section cut out to show it off but for now it'll sit behind a stock item.
Thanks guys. Although the big turbo, respray etc etc is a definate, the dead line is october to get it running with t&t. This means ill have to settle for only 320-330hp and carry out the engine and software mods over next winter.
Impossible with the audi engine. Purely because you have no room around the engine for a propshaft. I wouldn't say it's impossible using a heavily modified Quattro 01e gearbox attached to a l7x though. It'll want a 200-250mm drop box fabricating and mating to the rear after the Torsen diff. That would allow a propshaft to run back up beside the engine in the same way the driveshafts do in its typical transverse layout. The shell will need heavy floor pan mods though not to mention petrol tank relocation, diff mounted upfront, more weight etc etc. . . . . . .and yes, I have thought about it but can't see the point in it.
