Clio Big Steve’s Clio Williams 2 (World Cup Williams) 🌍

RIGHT after I bought the car, I had a punt on a strut brace that was advertised on eBay that looked like it might be the right one:

Well bugger my old boots!!! Looks like I’ve lucked out with that strut brace now 🎉

BUT… Flippin YODEL appear to have lost the parcel in transit 🤬🤬🤬🤬 Fingers crossed they can find it.. 🙄

Nothing I like more than a challenge… :grin.gif:

As I mentioned before, the strut tops in the engine bay are drilled for a strut brace that was previously fitted to the car:

I would usually look to get the strut tops welded and the holes filled in, but I like the originality of this car, so wanted to see if could source another identical strut brace.

I mentioned before that I found one for sale on eBay in the UK and bought it, but Yodel lost it! :ireful2.gif:(BTW NEVER send anything with Yodel, they’re 💩 heads! 🤬🤬🤬)

So I set my heart on finding another one, and after a LOT of googling, managed to find a New Old Stock one for sale in Italy, but they wouldn’t send it to me in the UK because of Brexit, so I asked them to send it to my companies office in Munich, and this morning managed to get it back home following a business trip!

  • Train to Frankfurt airport
  • Thru airport security (Wasn’t confiscated from me! 🙂)
  • Managed to get it on board with me (Wasn’t asked to check it in! 🙂)
  • Sauntered thru UK Customs 🛃 (No tax to pay! 😉)
  • Properly unpacked it at home, and clear to see it’s been on a shelf gathering dust for MANY years!!
Another box ticked for this car!!:declare.gif:

Got out there for a couple of hours this afternoon as still getting over a nice Christmas dose of man flu 🤒

Wanted to see if I could get a couple of the trim pieces sitting on the car a little better. The door upper seal was the first one to look at, it had a bad case of the baggies on the leading edge:

Gently prised it all off with the plastic trim levers, and saw that the mechanical fixing posts are all there, the issue was a combination of broken fastenings and the seal actually rusting under the rubber skin:

Bought a couple of bags of clips off eBay:

And worked with them to fenagle the seal back on making it all look a lot better for itself with an added dollop of tiger seal where it was beyond repair:

Next up was the roof gutter moulding that was lifting near the drivers door.

Again that came out ok:

And again I ordered a bag of clips off eBay in preparation:

Then it was a case of fitting the new clips:

And bobbing it back on:

Looking a LOT better for itself already..!
wow didnt know you could still get those clips! Thanks for adding the linkl!

Nipped up town for a spot of lunch today and took the Clio Williams, couldn’t resist a photo when we parked up:

After lunch, I cajoled @Millie_Bee into giving the car a drive for the first time. You know how it goes guys with your wives/partners 🙄:
  • “The clutch is too heavy”
  • “The brake pedal’s too long”
  • “The accelerator’s too sharp”
But within a couple of miles, she’d got used to the car and the compliments soon started to come in:
  • “There’s no rattles..!”
  • “It feels really solid and stable”
  • “It’s quick!”

Took her out to a few country roads we like to drive, and she really got into it:

And I even managed to get a little video of her driving it round a couple of favourite corners, and the car gave a little POP as she accelerated away!

All the secondary Oil gauges are working well (Oil level only works when you start the car) :

Makes your life easier when your partner likes your car doesn’t it..!? 😉

Started to take the car apart tonight for the major service:

There’s a lot of grime & surface rust present, but everything’s coming apart alright, nothings broken off at all!!

Front drivers headlight removed to expose the belts, which seem really loose. I know there’s something about the tensioner teeth breaking, so suspect there may be an issue here… will see when I strip it down.

Radiator drained and removed, and chuffed to see that the car was full of Type D! 👍

Already fighting the urge to take it all out and get everything sprayed, plated, powdercoated, refurbished etc etc etc… 🫣

Just as an FYI to anyone reading this thread in the future, these are the panels i've ordered for the Clio Williams welding work that will be done this summer on the sills and rear arches
  • Sills both sides
Drivers Side -> RENAULT BODY PANELS
Passenger side -> RENAULT BODY PANELS
  • Front Jacking Points:
Same as 5 GTT -> RENAULT 5 GT TURBO FRONT JACKING POINTS REPLACEMENT PANELS ZINC PRIMED SET OFF | eBay
  • Rear Jacking points:
Same as 5GTT -> RENAULT 5 GT TURBO REAR JACKING POINTS REPLACEMENT PANELS SET | eBay
  • Williams Rear Arches
I've ordered a pair of (apparently) correct williams/valver form rear arches from this chap in France to save my welder man have to re-create the panels from sheet material. They're not bloody cheap at €250 (£237.61) but they look like they should be saving me a lot of fabrication time, so went for this option. They've not turned up yet...Here's hoping they're right!? -> Racer Guihom
