Battery/Starting Issues.....

Firstly...Happy New Year fellow Vee owners...... :)

After spending over 5 hours "de-Christmasing" the house today (taking down the tree/decs etc.,) and still in the mood for spring cleaning, I decided to wash my very filthy Vee.....and trust me, he was proper dirty...and grumpy cause I'd not washed him for above 2 weeks :(

2 Days ago, I had another 2 coils go on the car (6 in total now) and TBH, the day before the coils went, the car to me sounded 'odd' when it was ticking over, but not "coil-gone" odd. Also, temps up North here have been consistently in the minus's over the last week or so, the last 3 nights between -2 and -7 !!!! [smilie=icon_eek.gif] :s so bloody fleein....

Anyway, I filled a bucket with Autoglym bodyworks shampoo and deep-gloss shine, got my wash & drying mitts and headed for the jet wash at the bottom of the road. Washed and dryed off the Vee with a microfibre cloth and jumped in to go and hoover the insides, turned on the ignition....NOTHING [smilie=icon_eek.gif] didn't even turn over...dead as a dodo  absolutely no charge whatsoever..... [smilie=icon_eek.gif]

Half an hour later when the cavalry arrived and gave me a jump start, I left the car ticking over whilst I hoovered inside and the drove it home and parked it up....it was running perfectly fine afterwards....

So....the BIG question.....anyone else had similar issues..??? Anyone got any ideas what the issue might be..??? Do you technical folk think that the coil issue could be related to the battery/starting issue..??? Oh and BTW, on Tuesday, I did over 80 miles in the Vee driving up to the North York moors to do a walk, so it's not like he's not been anywhere to charge the battery....

Could be that he is simply being a sulky Vee for being left outside in the cold and not being washed..!!! haha!

Answers on a postcard please folks to the usual.... :)

Muchos Gratias....

I had the same problem once when filling up in petrol station ! went to pay then nothing totally dead ! checked battery leads and the positive was loose , only slightly but enough to cause the fault ! it was a new battery by the way :) HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL :approve:

Hi Jainy,

Bryan (Polesitter) recently had a similar problem with starting - turned out he needed a new starter motor on it! May want to check it.

Matt.

LOL Jainy, my house was de-decorated today ... Didn't take me quite 5 hours though ...

I think the battery sounds possible too ... Giving it a good overnight charge would be a good idea as it is easy to drain the battery in this weather with lights, heating, stereo and window deminsters etc. In the mean time you may have to turn Britney down on the radio to stop draining the battery

A faulty battery or poor charge may explain the poor idling and I guess it is possible this could upset the electrics when starting and cause coil failure ... Food for thought there ... Some garages should be able to test a battery for you too ...

I would also check your spark-plugs at some stage to see if there are any issues or a loose screw top. I seem to remember you have had the same coil go on 2 or 3 occassions :-(

Good luck with sorting FBMM ... And welcome to 2009 for you too ...

Martin

Agree with what Martin says here, but it's possible that it may only be a loose connection on the battery, best check that they are all tight and clean, let us know how you get on Jainy.

Phill

I know they do adaptors for those things Jainy but it must be a big one if it drained the battery, Id suggest you get duracels for it and not use the car battery.

LOL

Happy new year luv hope 2009 brings you good things.
