Battery problem I think

I did see the thread with pictures on how to change it and once i read it i realised this was a DIY job. I also saw the link for the company who sell them for about £120 which i believe you bought it from. Which make is it and do you feel the Bosch one may be worth the extra investement?

Thanks

I don't have a view on the extra investment Phil despite being a big Bosch fan generally. My decision making was based on the assumption that starter motor manufacturers must have some quality standards which are fairly consistent and I couldn't justify the additional cost, even though I could afford it. The understanding of the root cause also made me realise that this could happen again and to any starter motor as the binding material was the point of failure not any of the moving components or casing etc.

I recently replaced mine with a remanufactured starter from Renault and was pleased to see the magnets are now bolted on. This makes the outer casing larger and after initial panic found that it is possible to refit in the space available, just ! It is so much better than the previous starter that I wonder if the magnets had dropped off the original from new !

I had exactly the same thing happen to me a month ago. Got some petrol, tried to start it and all I got was clicking. Got the AA out who bump started the car. This is always a fall back option if you can't get it started.

Quick word of warning though, I got the starter recommended on this site, and it turned out to be too big without having to pull the exhaust off (maybe due to the aftermarket exhaust). I would recommend you get the old one out before ordering a new one.

Making sure you get the exact replacement is key as there are some variances - research is the key ... The OEM starter is a very tight fit though and you have to remove OEM heat shields so either way there isn't much room. It is possible that with aftermarket parts like exhausts you may not actually be able to remove OEM ancilliaries anyway depending on clearances etc. You might have actually been lucky you could still remove your OEM starter :approve:

Mine has the same noise, its the magnets coming off the starter rotor. my starter is under warranty, it will be coming off soon and going back to the shop.

Have you replaced one already?
