5 GT Turbo B18FT 1.7 TURBO into my Renault 5 GTX

Hi everyone,
Im new to TurboRenaul but i hope its gonna me be my home away from home for the forseable future. Ive just picked up a Volvo 1.7 Turbo engine (B18FT) to fit nicely in my Renault 5 GTX. This thread is gonna be my running build of it from start to finish, starting with the heap of junk the engine is currently which you'll see when you scroll down and the car its going in.
Just a bit about myself, as like i said im new, im currently an apprentice heavy goods mechanic, which ill soon be out of my time in the next few months. Done a few engine swaps in work and thought id have a do at some of my own stuff, plus i wanna make the engine how i want it. Something NUTS.

I intend to...
Strip the engine apart, rebuild and replace anything worn or damaged and add new shiny things that will make it trot a bit faster. Probably ported and polished head, hardened valve stem seals, hardened valve seats, posibbly a camshaft or some sort, stronger valve springs. Not sure about bottom end wise, obviously big end and main bearings shells and so on, but not sure what ill find when i get in their.
Short term it will be getting it built, getting it in, and running then possibly go further with bigger turbo, injectors and that chipped ECU ive been reading so much about that gets rid of the turbo boost limit. Gearbox will be sent away and rebuilt as the donor car had done 114k and as i intend to kick the hell out of it best bet is get that done as well. Probs sandwich plate external oil cooler, and maybe that spray injector in the intercooler for cooling? Although i dont know much about that yet and it wont be for a while. Lightened and balance flywheel maybe and a uprated stronger clutch setup. Anything anyone reccomends just give me a shout because this isnt going to be a fast project, anything i like the sound of ill probs get done as if im going to do it i wanna do it right. Plus i just really wanna toast all them hair dresser sun tan boys in their type R's and Golf R's at Santa Pod in something i built in my shed.

Ok so lets get to it... Ive already got a load of questions and in need of advice on a load of things.
The engine:

Not spent any time on it yet, only got it delivered on friday, but ive noticed theirs a slight hair line crack on the turbo where it bolts to the manifold:

It looks bigger than it is, its only really a hair line, whats my best bet with solving this? Weld it up? I probably intend to strip it apart and rebuild with a bearing set, but im eventually gonna upgrade to a bigger turbo, so is it worth doing sooner rather than later? Or just fix her up, get the engine ran in then upgrade?

The biggest problem is the wiring loom... The nugget who took it out of the car cut it off at the bulk head:

i63.tinypic.com_5e7ns7.webp

Am i right in saying this is the only loom im after the conversion? Taking that its got both the ignition and fuel ECU's on it. I know i can just connect the each wire back but theirs more than one colour of each... So i could get them wrong? Any help?
Also what does the red plug do? Is that where i gain my live feeds and earth from the car?

I also got another set lot of loom that had also recieved the same treatment. What a penis.

Am i right in thinking this is not needed? And was used to power acilaries for the rest of the old car? Can i throw this or is any of it used?

This is just a box of more goodies i received, broken MAF flow sensor, although the hot wire is intact and so should be usuable. Cone air filter, coil pack, and a few other things.

And the car shes going in when built, completely standard at the moment to be honest, it'll be a sleeper at first then i dont know where ill go with it, lowered, respray, bodykit, alloysor banded steelies...

So this is going to be on going, any help would be MASSIVELY appreciated as i know their are some clever arse people on here who know a hell of lot more than me, Cheers

Great project mate, like the GTX's

Agree the guy was a tool who cut the loom out.....or he's never tried soldering. See here for 480 wiring diagrams:

Volvo 480 Downloads

In your box is a MAF, coil, 480 OE boost solenoid, aux water pump & what looks like a carbon canister for collecting emissions :)

Nice one for that mate I've been after them wiring diagrams, should help. That emissions canister is it needed? It won't be fitted if it's not needed. What's your opinion on the state of that turbo? I think I might post dog poo through the guys letter box who took this engine out the lemon.

Wiring loom is probably salvageable but not ideal, he was a right tool cutting it out like that.
You don't need to connect many wires to the 5 to get the B18FT running (done few conversions myself) but its worth checking the Volvo diagram to make sure its not had bits cut off

I personally wouldn't use that turbo, as its cracked the housing it will only get worse

No need for the carbon canister, wouldn't worry fitting it

Sweet the canister will be put to one side. Probably on the look out for a turbo then, probably a T25. Anyone got one for sale? This loom is gonna be a headache :dy::dg:

True that, right so i've not got any gear to start repairing this wiring today ill bring it home from work with me monday, but been looking at it, im presumimg:

Brown and black are the earths, since half of them seem to join at a crimped connector, so i can join all them up.

The rest of the colours i should be able to join back up, although their are a few of the same colour so these ill have to scan the wiring diagrams to sort, any pointers?

Also what does the red plug do? Is this where im wiring the loom into the car, lives and earth etc.

The rest of the loom seems to be intact, but am going to run through the wiring diagrams ive kindly been sent when ive got an hour or two to get my head around the whole system, to see how it works and see if im missing anything.

I need a drink :read.gif:

Ok, so ive been busy with life stuff i.e work, family, standard stuff. Ive pinched a bit of time here and their to crack on with the repairing of the loom:

So its repaired. I need to test it, then wrap in a nylon loom wrap, tidy a few other bits up then she should be good to go. For anyone who was reading further up and is interested in the route i went with repairing then...

The shielded wires: I connected the core wires with these... Pretty much a heat shrink with a band of solder in the middle and when heated solders both wires together and gives a tight plastic cover for protection. I think their pretty shit hot tbh.

The 'shielded' part of the wire, which goes around the center core i pretty much tried to wrap around the core as it originally was, then used copper foil to wrap around that, making the shield complete as best as i could, then heat shrink over than to seal it. If it works bonus, if not then im still after a new loom. Them wiring diagrams are absolute gold @jamesy12345 :clapping.gif:

Not much else done to be honest as ive not had much time, got a nice intercooler from a vauxhall frontera as recommended by @Haz
Also got my engine stand. Engine wise im waiting to get my shed delivered and built, get my bench and vise up and running then i can actually get some progress done. Baby steps, josh, baby steps.

I would bin that exhaust housing on the turbo. You have done well to splice the loom together, i chopped one about 12 years ago to lose some wiring and i instantly regretted it when looking at the wiring lol. Keep the updates coming

I like those heat shrink sleeves, nice idea

Guy on ebay breaking a 480 turbo
volvo 480 1.7 turbo breaking for spares interior seats
Yeah I spoke to that bloke a while back on ebay, he's used the engine and loom himself for a conversion, shame. Nice one for giving me a shout tho :clapping.gif: theirs one bloke on ebay religiously braking 480's I've probably messaged him 10 times without realising it's the same bloke, never seems to have turbos tho :negative.gif:

Yeah theirs a t28 off a Nissan 200sx for £125 which I've been informed can fit with a bit of felting so I think I'll whack that on before the engine goes in, saves running into problems. Get it running with that and later get a turbo technics hybrid to see how far I can take it, but I hate talking about ifs and maybes. I had to learn to read a wiring diagram to sort the loom, whether it works or not I've gained something. :bf:

Not ran her for like 2 months, took a while after cranking for a bit, could smell the petrol, she fired up and ran for like 30 seconds, then boom! Full engine bay on fire I thought shit, extinguisher, nar I've not got one, bucket of water ran into the gaff filled the pots basin with water casually as the car is about to detonate on my drive, got the misses to fill a load of glasses up bam leathered the b***ard with as much water as the tap would allow and it finally gave in. Shit my self.

oh dear! looks like you caught it though, hopefully can be saved?
Yeah she should be right, looks like I'm ripping the engine out on this earlier than expected, so I can go through the engine bay make it all sweet. I don't think it's that bad but it's hard to tell till I've got in their. None of the neighbours even came out which is surprising. One can only laugh :download.gif:
