5 GT Turbo Another Red Renault 5 GT Turbo On It's Way Back To The Road

That’s good to hear. Keeping momentum going on a project is not easy. Like a few of the guys have said on here, any progress is worthwhile, no matter how small. 👍🏻
Exactly mate ive had my car for 2 years so far and ive attempted to get it running but its having a french electrics dilema and i kinda lost interest for a bit but these threads are bringing the interest back 100%

That weld looks like it needs a bit more power, it should melt down into the metal a bit more. When doing thin stuff, its much easier (I find) to do a 1 sec blast, let it cool for 2 secs, then another and another with a little overlap. Basically little buttons of weld. If you try and weld a constant seam it'll just blow thorugh and make a mess. I didnt even grind this back, just primed and undersealed it. Once you get in the rhythm its quite theraputic!

@DaveL485 that looks awesome! My next one will look exactly like that 🤣

I’ve ordered a new regulator and I’m fetching a new bottle tomorrow so I’ll hopefully gave a play at the weekend 👍🏻
Just practice, use some of the metal you cut out with some of the new material to set the welder up before you hit the car. You'll have loads of scrap lying around and its far easier to set up on the bench with scraps than it is getting pissed off lying under the car.

I've managed to get a few hours in this weekend 👍

Firstly, my regulator arrived and I collected a new 10l tank of Argon 5% co2.

Wow, what a difference that's made! My regulator clearly was not working properly. Still need to get some practice in, but it's an improvement.

I used the method that @DaveL485 suggested, tnanks. 👍

You're rolling now, looks like you'll get repairs done mostly hidden by skirt, advice for you, get some thick cardboard or plastic sheet they protect floors on building renovations and tape it on the parts of the panels above where you working......I know sounds a bit flighty when hot stick is involved, but a kick on the grinder and it skittling across good paint on bottom of door or lower quarter churns your guts.....I've done it
Obviously keep an eye on it when welding, but I reckon you'll get away blowing sills in with a quart of paint.

Cheers @DaveL485 I don’t think I’ll be short of scrap bodywork to practice on. Granted, it’s all rotten! 🤣

Thanks @Turbell I’m hopeful that will be the case so I can retain the original, visible overlap between the two parts of the outer sill. It’ll probably depend on how far up the inner sill has gone.
Good idea with protecting any good paint. I was using the knotted wheel the other day and decided to flip the grinder over so it would skip away from the paint if I had a mishap, so it is something I’m conscious of. It makes more sense to just cover it up though and I’d not considered that, thanks. 👍🏻

Thanks @clarky_gtt for the offer but as you say, it’s probably a bit ott for my needs. I’m hoping my inner sills can be saved. Time will tell. Thanks anyway.

Cheers for your comments guys, much appreciated.

If it were me I would nab these now in a flash, then you can re-sell if you dont use them. Stuff like this doesnt come up really so you wont struggle to sell them on if not used. And then if you do need them you have them there.
