987.1 Porsche Cayman S

After owning and loving my R26 RenaultSport (see R26 - Standard to Track for project) for almost 3 years, I sold up in May and started the look for another car......

I was done with track driving (saw a few mates have crashes), realised I was hooked on chasing 0.5 seconds and burning ££ in the process, the car wasn't as usable and I just fancied something with a better build quality and more road friendly.

Started off initially considering a 2008 or so Mini Cooper JCW - they looked ok sytle wise to me, they were at a decent price point, they'd certainly have a nicer build than the renault and be a decent driving experience - the more I researched the engines, the dreaded timing chain rattle and how much oil they burn every 1k I decided not for me...

The summer kind of comes and goes, my Dad's in Greece for months, I have my old car I gave him, I kind of stopped looking.

Sept time and I miss having a performance car really badly so it was time to turn it up.

Then it was the turn of the RS250 to take my fancy...they really started depreciating heavily, really heavily and you could pick up an FF CUP with leather recaros for like 9.5k, I very very nearly bought an OG one, the thing that put me off was it being too similar an experience to the R26.

Next came Scoobies, then you're taking bigger money - 15k or so. My bro is part of the scoob fraternity and would send me ad's etc, but it was the running costs, the tax, running a 400hp forged scoob wouldn't be cheap and it didn't really 'do it' for me.

So once I had increased the budget and saw other options, I just said fuck it, I want a porsche - I've wanted a 987 for year (drove a couple 4 years ago) and if I don't do it now I may never do it.....

So looked at many boxters, they're £ for £ much better value than the caymans, they're much easier to source, and they tend to be lower mileage as well...but they're not the dream....ever since I saw the Cayman in 2005 its been the dream so I focused more on them....

Looked for MONTHS, a good one would come up, then it would be gone within 24 hours, the ones that didn't look so good would be around for weeks - its a small strange market with so many of the cars concentrated within the home counties which isn't ideal for me>

But with it becoming winter, it was a great time to buy and my patience paid off.

It was top top end of budget (ie way above what I wanted to spend) but it was a car sold by a local porsche mechanic who now also sells a very small amount of porsche's - it was ULTRA low mileage, and literally is like brand new inside.

The colour wouldn't be my choice ( I would of preferred a guards red, cobalt blue etc) and didn't have all the options I wanted, but its a 2nd hand car, it ticked so many of the boxes that 2 days before my birthday I put a deposit down on this beauty...and collected it a week later. :D

I have a real thing for the cayman. What a car for the cash. Knowing you @papps you will be modding the car. What routes are there to go down ?

I am glad you swerved the scoob - somehow doesnt seem you

Ha yep wasn't me at all really.

There's a couple of things I would like to do.

1 I only found out about a few days ago - its really easy, cheap(ish) and very easy to return the car to stock as well - it'll really make it look more modern - its basically a mod that removes the fog lights and replaces the grill with a more modern LED at the front - I'll get pics up.

The other is the obvious - the exhaust - you can either get the OEM one opened up, with some restrictions removed and re welded to remain OEM look but basically give you the porsche sports exhaust - or get an aftermarket system so you can put the OEM one back on the car at a later date...

The other mod I'm considering is getting a double din android DAB Nav headunit with the OEM Porsche surround to get rid of the std CD deck. The current set up isn't bad - the sound is amazing, it does have ipod and AUX connectivity also

Oh and a proper professional paint correction detail - the paint isn't bad at all - hardly any swirls, and its silver so doesn't show the marks as much - but given what a difference it made on the megane, it may be the first cash I spend on the car - its the gift that keeps on giving

Spec of the car:

Its a 2006.

Options include: Sports Seats (bigger bolster support, higher wings and silver back), heated seats, extended leather package (door cards, dash etc), BOSE Hifi upgrade, colour match centre console (rare option only usually seen on a Cayman R), Sport Design Steering Wheel, Xenons, auto dim mirror etc etc

Big options I DON'T have: 19s, I only have the OEM 18 Cayman S wheel, but I like it, and its cheaper tyres so not a deal braker; Sport Chrono (many say its a gimmic as it only sharpens the throttle response and can be retro fitted but ideally would of liked it), PASM (The sports adjustable suspension, the jury is out on this one, as after driving the car I wouldn't change it now, some say the PASM means on soft the car is too soft for the road, and on hard its too hard for the road....it also means more expensive dampers etc)

All in all it ticked more boxes than it missed.

Initial Thoughts?

Driving position is insane, so low, steering wheel perfect, pedals amazing, gearshift position etc

The noise - the sound of the 3.4 NA that sits right behind you is truely magical.

The throttle response, obviously coming from a turbo.

The more you push on in the car, the more agressive, tight and focused it becomes, the more lazy you are with the car, the more of a luxuary GT experience it gives you.

The R26 would destroy it on track :p

Anything I don't like about it or would change?

The gearing is a little too long for me - 2nd is 67mph, 3rd is like 95mph (from my research online ;) ) shorter ratios would be a peach, but these cars are also built for cruising at 140mph on the autobahn and need a top speed for kudos (171mph in this case)
The steering rack could be a little quicker (just a little)

Couple of extra pics - the Sport Design Wheel (which I LOVE over the OEM triangle shaped one, this one was OEM in the GT3), and an aftermarket fuel cap which I LOVE also - never realised till the first time I had to fill up - nice surprise 20171203_143421.webp20171203_143443.webp

Who is this imposter and what have they done with @papps ?

No suspension mods ? No sticky rubber ? No remap ?
Haha.....

It already has a new set of Bridgestone RE505 tyres on it, they're sticky enough for now lol

I started very slow on the R26, initally it was a short shifter and an exhuast, so I'm sure there's time for me to get properly carried away again.

The gen1 cayman isn't ideal for track though - the power steering needs uprated, the lower arm bushes need uprating and the engine's aren't known for being ideal for it - but maybe a porsche club day when most folk take it easy would be ideal

Ok, tell me more about the PAS and lower arm bushes needing to be uprated ?

"Hard track driving in Generation 1 cars can make the hydraulic power steering pump overheat (specialists can supply modified ones) and wear out track-rod ends (Generation 2 cars had larger ones that are more durable). On the subject of circuit driving, firmer springs and dampers can help a little, but for general road use the factory set-up is already close to ideal"

Sorry it was TRE's I was thinking about.

Just having a quick read, the only issue with the engine is a rare ingestion issue apparently

Nice choice @papps

Although you mentioned your R26 would murder it on track, I'm sure you would agree with me when I say you just know where the extra cost of the car is spent when you're driving your Crocodile?

I'll be following this thread closely :df:
