5 GT Turbo 5 GT Turbo tuning advice

Hello everyone

I am looking to purchase a phase 2, 5 GT turbo, As far as i am aware the engine is stock other than, S/S Carb Lobster, uprated Alloy Intercooler and air filter with a manual boost controller. I don't want crazy power i just want something relatively quick and reliable.

I was looking at cgbmotorsport's website just out of interest at their turbos where they state the following.

Turbo Technics Stage 2 T2/T25 Turbo

" We find many people purchase the biggest they can afford, rather than buying a turbo which suits there driving style."

63 exhaust housing for upto 200 BHP - full boost at 3500rpm - good 30-100+ mph
.47 exhaust housing for upto 185 BHP - full boost at 3000rpm - good 20-80 mph
.35 exhaust housing for upto 170 BHP - full boost at 2500rpm - good 0-60 mp
h

The above breakdown i found very insightful, 70+ Mph is of no interest to me what so ever as my younger days's of speeding are long gone. Im also not one to race off the lights or from a stand still i would say just a nice feeling of boost and pushed back into your seat action from 20-60 would keep me happy.

What would recommend a good spec to achieve this while keeping the car as reliable as possible?

Kind Regards

Ash.

Hi Ash ,

To be controversial here - if you days of 70+ and TLGP ( traffic light GP ) are over I would stick with a stock t2 buddy. I am sure someone will be along in a minute to contradict me , but I would invest in a AFR kit from someone like Scoff @ EFi Parts , or our own @DeanGT5 sometime has them , and fuel the carb to suit maybe 14psi and leave the car alone.

The five is generally reliable in multiple states of tune , it just has to be setup correctly first time. For instance @Brigsy has a 235bhp van with a c1j in. I have seen him under the bonnet twice on that van. Both times with cleaning rags after taking it out on track.

I hope that helps ? !

Hey Andy thanks for the reply that helps a alot.

It would be great if i could keep the stock turbo, What kind of power would be made at 14psi? and would that be enough to push you back in your seat and make you grin? also is there anything else that would need to be uprated for that boost?

I looked into this some years ago but never pulled the trigger and have forgotten everything i read. I will look into the AFR kits and re jetting the carb etc. Iirc it requires drilling the jets etc, Is there any guides around you know of for this i can read up on and is there a specific AFR kit you would recommend at all?

Finally is there any after market parts or anything useful to make the car as reliable as possible or is it more a case of setting it up correctly and maintaining it well from that point on? I would like to use the car on a daily basis if possible.

Thank's again

Ash.

The above the carb rebuild guide , but it will help give you an idea of what is what.

14psi it wont make anything massive , 140 possibly a fraction higher. It will feel quite quick as it will spool early. Its never going to be a rocket ship with a baby turbo , but you specified you dont particularly want to go that fast.

If you want to get a bit more out of it , you can get a t25 ( from a rover tomcat ! ) they blow a bit harder and can increase the boost a bit to maybe 16psi . I really wouldnt think going much higher with the stock cooler will gain you anything other than hot air though , so this is where the slippery mod slope starts , cos then you get a front mount , a decent exhaust / downpipe and might as well get a cam while you are there.

Suddendly 200bhp is the next target ...

Where abouts are you located, I found a stock turbo or T2/T25 hybrid a great turbo.. Nippy as they say.. T25 are the common upgrade.. Decent high power (175bhp+ turbo, ), T28 high power but laggy.. (OK for those who rev the tits off it etc...

Sound like you want a Nippy car, won't go wrong with a T2/T25 hybrid or stick to standard.

You can easily tune these cars, of your thrashing days are over you can have lots of fun with 140-160bhp..

I am in the midlands BTW

I guess ill just have to see how i get on with it, Hopefully the slippery slope to more power doesn't take hold but who knows! :)

Thank's for all the replies, i'm pleasantly surprised to see quite a few active members which is always good to know in case i encounter any problem's and need to ask advice.

Any other general tips for maintaining a 5? From what i can see parts are still relatively readily available, Is there any parts you would recommend i pick up as back up's for common issues, i seem to recall clutch cables snapping was a common problem or am i thinking of another vehicle?

We are active over here. This is the quiet time as well , with most people working :)

You are right , clutch cables do go , but it tends to be if they are not routed correctly , or worse , aftermarket. Genuine Renault only on these.

We have Mike @Gt Turbo Spares on board and Bob @CGB as well for second hand and new spares. They have a section each in the traders area.

General rule is buy quality new parts , ideally OEM.

You'll find a few members around the midlands area I think.

Certain oil filters are harder to find but there seems to be alternatives. There are some parts that are becoming more and more difficult to find which is why you will see some ludicrous prices for things such as gear knobs, front bumpers, parcel shelves and front grilles to name but a few.

You can still get genuine clutch cables from Renault which seem to be stronger and more reliable than the so called "heavy duty cables"

In terms of maintenance - just like any car really, change oil regularly. Service parts are readily available such as ignition parts etc.

During my search I found the most difficult thing was finding a 5 without any rust, i'm not sure they exist so my advice is to check any car you buy throughly.

Where should i start making adjustments to the carb to set it up for 14psi?

dont change anything.

run the car at the 14psi , and you want to be looking for around 12.1 maximum on the AFR after a decent pull. If it leans out ( goes higher than 12.1 ish then we can look at carb tweaking.

Go for 15lbs at the carb top thats roughly 12lbs at the inlet manifold. You will prob only need to enlarge the 2nd stage enrichment jet the rest can stay stock for now.

Hello all
I went and viewed a GT Turbo today and left a deposit! Can't wait to pick it up!, Ill get some pics up when i get her home.

While looking over the engine i noticed it appears to have the lug welded into the down pipe for the wideband sensor. Ill post a pic bellow can anybody confirm if that's what it appears to be? If so that's going to make installing my wideband so much easier :D

Also can anybody confirm that the red pipe where i have drawn the little green arrow towards is the pipe i should connect my boost gauge to? It also appears to have manual boost controller which i won't be touching until my boost gauge and wide band are installed.

1) looks like a lambda boss yes !
2) again , yes ..

another point , bin the boost controller. manual or not , a carb can only fuel for one pressure. IE set it up once , and set it right.

Wicked! Are all the sensors the same size? I am planning on ordering the AEM Wideband UEGO 6-in-1 gauge from Efiparts, is there anyway i can be sure it will fit?

I will take your advice and remove the boost controller also, I agree once its set up there is no need to mess with the boost.

As for the boost gauge dose it make any difference where along that pipe i T into? Would it be better to have it closer to the manifold and T into the blue pipe on the other side? I can't see it making much difference but i just want to double check with you professionals :D
