19 16v JB3 / JB5 gearbox question.

I've got a 19 16v Cabrio (1994 'M') which currently has a (knackered) JB3 gearbox in it. A breaker has promised me that the JB5 gearbox (it came out of a 1993 K plate 16v) he has will fit my car as the JB3 & JB5 gearboxes are interchangable. Can anyone confirm that this is true, please?

Also, are the JB3s that were in 16v Clios of that time the same as the 19s and therefore interchangable? This is something else I've been told is true but I don't want to take a breaker's word for it when he's trying to flog me the 'box.

Any help provided will be much appreciated. I'm desperate to get my old bitch back on the road and, with the right advice, that might not be too far away.

JB1,JB3,JB5, and JC5 Gearbox's fit the F series engine. Gear ratio change due to size of engine. this can be found out via the code. JB3-XXX.

This issue is important because the gearbox (jb3) on my car was damaged
and so far I do not know what is the best gearbox to replacement

and To give me the same performance Is gearbox for the Volvo 460 or 480Turbo Be suitable
Because what I know jb3 Gearbox Is the fastest in all accelerations
I hope to correct This information if Incorrect

as peter says, it depends on the ratios, which you can't tell from "jb3", "jb5", etc..

the clio box fits, but the ratios are, again, different..

The code tell's you the Ratio's. Clio box, as lower ratio's

So, my current tag is JB3 071. So, if I changed that for another gearbox with a different ratio to it, what would be the effects of that? I understand that I'd be changing gear at different speeds to before but, aside from that, is there anything else?

Thanks for your continued help from a bit of a novice who has little idea on how a gearbox works.

Well the acceleration would be different, probably not enough for you to tell the difference in most cases.

depends on the box how far the ratios are out.

can mean having to change to 3rd to get to 60 mph or sitting at 80 at 4200rpm etc etc
