Hi all , I recently purchased a 1991 Renault Trafic prima d autosleeper 2.1d as a running van but completely gutted inside, I have been slowly rebuilding the interior back into a useable camper , I also had to do a few bits like welding, replace suspension leg and brake lines etc but nothing to serious , anyway after getting her road worthy and taking her on her first good run I soon realised she's no motorway cruiser to say the least, she's comfortable at 44mph but will do 57 at a push but dont like to thrash it if you can call 57 thrashing it lol, anyway I was wondering if and when the engine does give up ( seems completely reliable) done over 2k in the last month travelling all be it very slow but when it does start failing I'd love to put a more powerful preferably turbo charged engine in & wondered if any other Renault models offered a simple swap option so I could sit at 70 at lower revs. Any advice would be very much appreciated other then scrap it as I'm kinda attached to this van 😉👍

Whats under the bonnet? Is this a transverse lump or longitudinal J-Series like the earlier ones?

Cool van! My parents had a Mk1 camper conversion years ago.

Here's a couple of photos as I'm not very clued up on this sort of thing. And thank you, I built it during lock down using anything I could find still lots to do but its usable as is. And yes I am a little ashamed of the state of it under the Bonnet 🙈 20210915_114303.webp20210915_114351.webp

Welcome. Nice camper!
Mine was the smaller t1000, with a transverse mounted, petrol F engine so I converted it to a B18ft. I had the gearbox rebuilt at the time . . But I had the same issue as you, the gears are so low. Crazy acceleration, clunky gearchange and a top speed of 90mph, at 6200 rev limit!
As yours is a camper, and the longitudinal 2ltr D, I would suggest finding a turbo version and use all or just the manifolds, turbo and fuel system from that, maybe a later, smaller van, an espace maybe? More torque to improve acceleration, and possibly a box to match.
The td versions have a more pronounced grille for the intercooler iirc, t1100?
But I think your question doesn't give the result you are after. You would still be limited at the same speed and revs unless you change the gearbox.
The campervan gear ratios will be lower than the van variants, so just a gearbox swap could get the 70 cruising, 85/90 full speed, albeit slower without more power.

Thank you, it's the 1st time I've ever attempted anything like that so has plenty of rough edges to sort out but it's already helped us create some cool memories. Yes my main aim is to be able to sit on the motorway at 65mph and not have to be in 2nd gear for steep hills. Thank you very much for doing a lil googling on my behalf, I'll keep my eyes open for either the whole replacement from the donor vehicle you mentioned or a differently geared box as like you said these boxes don't fill you with confidence to say the least so having a spare wouldn't be a bad idea. Thanks again for you replies really appreciate the help : )
