Wise Words

Joni Mitchell. A wise woman. In the early 1970's she was taking in the spectacular view from her hotel room in Hawaii when she looked down and spotted the parking lot, inspiring her to write Big Yellow Taxi (let's ignore the irony that that song was pencilled partly as an environmental plea, and here I am making reference to it on a site dedicated to a V6 engined hatchback!). A very pleasant little ditty, the chorus begins:

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone....

On Feb 19th this year, Vee #294 was driven away to it's new home in Somerset and I was all set to chase another ambition of mine, to run a rally car. Or so I thought. I remember feeling totally gutted at selling up and that feeling never really left me, as days turned to weeks, turned to months. Sure, our Mini Cooper S is fun to drive and probably as quick, if not quicker over any difficult B-road than the vee, but it was lacking something. The X-factor, the VaVaVoom!

About a month or so ago, I came to the conclusion that I needed another vee in my life. Other marques were considered and I'm sure the same list as many others here have mulled over was drawn up, but the lure of the vee was simply too strong - nothing else came close for anything like the same amount of money.

The search was on and my first port of call was the new owner of #294 - we had a gentlemans agreement that if it were ever to be sold, I would have first refusal and after making a speculative call to Ed220V6, it turned out my luck was in. Yesterday began the longest day of long days, involving a 5.00am start, a train from Edinburgh to Taunton followed by 420 smiles drive back to Edinburgh! Ed is a true gent, and the amount of care and attention lavished on the car in his spell as owner is nothing short of incredible. I am ashamed to say, but she looks better now than at any point in my previous ownership and I am really going to have to raise my game in the car detailing stakes. Ed - I will be picking your brains on this further....

I am still going to pursue my rally dream, but will be doing so with #294 parked outside - if it takes another year or two, so be it, I'm fine with that!

So, a cautionary note to all fellow vee owners, bear in mind the words of Joni Mitchell - wise words from a wise woman.

Glad to hear you got home safely Iain, it was a pleasure to see you again.

Although I'm glad she has 'gone back home' it is with great regret that I had to let this happen. A combination of a recent house purchase and things looking very bleak at work (lack of work plus potentially having to move office to Exeter) pretty much made my mind up. When Iain called by chance a few weeks back I had little hesitancy in accepting a very fair offer for this gem of a car.

I haven't made my mind up what to do now, hopefully when offices closures have been decided and the Government start giving us Transportation Planners some work I'll be back in the market for another Vee. I'm totally smitten by them and nothing else does it for me. Having said this I'm probably going to look for a Clio Cup as I can probably afford to run one of them.

A few pics I took before I let her go can be found here:

Thanks SIMDOG :approve:

Chunk, looking forward to another top Pistonheads hoon around the borders in September and let's see if we can get some decent pics this time. For any other Vee's keen to stretch the legs with quite an array of exciting machinery in attendance, link to the run can be found here Pistonheads Scottish Borders Run 26th September

Ed - thanks again and look forward to seeing you back in vee ownership in the not too distant future.

If only i knew i was guaranteed to have LY300 back from the bodyshop that week i would join in the run as i am hoping to spend a few days in scotland- at this moment i am unsure whether she'll be up to standard in time?

Shame you have to sell Ed but it sounds like it's found it's way back to a good owner, I'm sure you'll get another! Don't worry about work.
We've just had our offer accepted on a new/old house which requires a fair bit of fettling so my vee plans are on hold - again!! So close, but no cigar!

Thanks mate, I hope to have another one soon. I admire your very measured approach, wish I had the same patience as you :)

IanT you're not the same IanT from Pistonheads by any chance? The one who has contributed to the WoW thread? If so I can see the world's ultimate WoW niche "club" v6 owning WoW players...

Not guilty! I'm "IainT V6" over on PH (plain old "IainT" was already taken - imposter!) and can most often been found fequenting MW2 as opposed to WoW :)
