Latest update...
So I decided last year that I was going to go for a colour change. I knew exactly the colour scheme I was going for as I’d done it previously on my 182 cup; Racing Blue and black. Now the question was paint or vinyl wrap...
Having costed both up and then thought through the implications of both I decided to go with the wrap. I liked the flexibility, the reversibility and the fact that paint protection is thrown in for ‘free’.
Now the issue was who to get to do it. It was nothing simpler than a google search for wrapped ph1’s and a company called Totally Dynamic popped up
Totally Dynamic
Phoned them up and spoke to a great guy called Scott (franchisee owner). He remembered doing a ph1 in matt black (seen around London by some) and said it would be no problems to get everything sorted for mine.
Once prices were agreed and a slot was booked I drove it down to Enfield and dropped it off. Now I knew that Scott did a lot of expensive machinery (have a look at the gallery section on the link above...) but it was a nice suprise to be able to have a half hour look around this
The whole process took less than 48 hours and the results were pretty much bang on. Scott showed me how to repair the vinyl should it be required and Totally dynamic offer a standard 3 year warranty for failure of the material. He said with the few miles the vee sees and the fact it's garaged etc the wrap should last at least 5 years. He also explained that parts of the wrap can be replaced (kind of like a vinyl version of a bumper/bonnet/wing respray) for peanuts.
I left a very happy chappy.
The car now looked like this at the front:
And this at the back

In my mind it still needed a couple more finishing touches in keeping with the RB and black theme.
1) Black headlights
2) Ph2 tail lights
3) Black badges
4) Wrapped fuel cap
First up were the headlights. Having read the how-to guide to removing a ph1 bumper I set about doing it. It took a long time but then again I was going purposely slow to make sure it was done right (think twice, cut once and all that). In the end it was really rather straight forward and I didn’t even have to fully remove the bumper to get the headlights out
Lights out:
I then disassembled the lights in the oven [smilie=icon_eek.gif] 150 degrees for 8-10 secs at a time until the adhesive had softened enough to peel the lights apart.
Nasty silver bits ready for sanding:
Once sanded/primered and painted I left them for a couple of days to thoroughly dry and then reassembled the lights (exact reverse of disassembly) and fitted the lights back in.
Headlights back in:
Whilst waiting for the headlights to dry I carbon vinyl wrapped the petrol cap and housing. This was a very simple process other than it took a while to get the carbon ‘weave’ of the wrap on the housing to match up with the carbon ‘weave’ of the wrap on the petrol cap once it was closed. Bit of time spent and this was done satisfactorily. Will try and get upclose pics of this at some point
Headlights now sorted it was time for the rear lights (sourced brand new for £28 delivered!!) . Now having taken the best part of a day to get at the headlights I was prepped for a struggle with the tail lights. This (initially) turned out to be the easiest job I’d yet had to do. I started on the left tail light and, again following the how-to guide, loosened the wing nut, removed the tail light changed the wires round to ph2 fitting and then replaced and secured the light: 5 mins in and I’m already half finished!!
So far so easy. Then I moved onto the right hand tail light....
Followed exactly the same process but was met with no ‘plug’ and a bunch of wires soldered onto connectors :s I phoned Renault for a quote for the connector and they priced it at £150!! (connector comes as part of the loom). I couldn’t be bothered with the hassle/time of contacting scrappies so I just decided to use my GCSE soldering skills and solder off the old wires and solder them back on in the correct ph2 configuration.
Left tail light – 5 mins
Right tail light 4 hours
Now the taillights were done I had to attend to the badges. They obviously had to go black so I removed them all (in the process broke the R off the ‘Renault’ – Renault wanted £35. Got it for £3 delivered from a scrappy!!) sanded/primered/sprayed up and left for a day or so.
The ‘Renault’ and the ‘Clio’ are attached by plugs on the ph1 so they slotted straight back in. The ‘sport’ and the ‘v6’ need adhesive and I didn’t have any so I left them off. Then I got used to the look and actually quite like it, so they’re staying off for now.
My favourite angle of the car:
And a random FCS photo from Modifiedcars.com
So that’s it pretty much set for the summer now. I’d like the stance lower – especially at the rear – and also have to source a front splitter as the car is alarmingly twitchy over xxxmph on the ph2 18’s (a full geo setup wouldn’t go amiss either!!). No idea where to start with the splitter :s Options anyone?!?
Next winter I’ll start the whole process again to get a straight through exhaust system, continue work on the interior and consider my options for the engine!! I really do love this car
