Winter/Cold weather tyres ?

phillv6

Having read quite a few articles about the benefits of having Winter/Cold weather tyres fitted (Evo article in particular) I'm seriously thinking of getting a set for the Vee as it's my daily driver and things can get fairly cold up here in Cumbria during the winter [smilie=icon_eek.gif].

When I mentioned it to my local friendly tyre dealer last time I had some new rears fitted, he said to make sure you get your order in early as supplies can become scarce later on in the year.

I was just wondering has anyone got any experience of them either on a Vee or any other car ?

Cheers,

Phill

I read a post on here a while back from a guy in Germany, he was selling his winter tyres as it didn't get cold enough in Germany to warrant putting them on.

hi,

plenty of experience of them on other cars as it's been practically law in luxembourg for a while ( officially from this year ), prior to that if you didn't have them on & you had an accident, the police would frown upon you (even fine you without question sometimes), your insurance would make it as difficult as possible to pay up & you couldn't get your little winter all clear/checked sticker from the government ( free check open to all car owners to prepare you car for winter use ! )

i've had winter tyres on a civic type-r, M3, fiat 500 abarth essesse ( current car ) plus a couple of other cars i'd rather not mention ;)

anyway, not had them on the Vee yet, but i guess i will have to fit them if I drive it this winter, although looks like i'm moving to the netherlands now, so it may not be an issue....

but for info ( from what I've been told by the garages in Lux ), once the road gets below about 5celcius, normal summer compound tyres don't adhere to the road as well, winter tyres are made of different compound ( as well as shed loads more tread for rain/snow dispersal ) which behaves better or can manage the colder tarmac temperatures.......they also have different ratings for max speed as if you drive your car too fast, they heat up real well & deform! or if you're lucky just smell real funky when you stop driving !.....for that reason, you can't or are recommended not to, drive in the summer in winter tyres. basically you'll bugger them real quick & they wear really badly with warm tarmac temperatures !

i'd hate to think what the price will be for Vee sized winter tyres & not even sure if my homolgation papers for luxembourg mention winter tyres sizes that fit the Vee ( all new cars have it mentioned on their registration papers ) but i'll check and let you know :)

tip for you, winter tyres are much cheaper on the continent, i.e germany, belgium, france....as they're used to fitting them each winter, not really heard of them being sold in the UK.

lol. Winter tyres. I use a garage and a SORN for mine.

Surely for those that use the Vee all year round winter tyres would be a sensible option (anything below 7 degrees C apparently).

I've read on other forums that they are very very good in cold weather [smilie=icon_cheers.gif], also have a read what Evo said about them 8)

Hi,

I'm looking for witer tyres for my MK2. Renault sais I need to use the rims of a MK1 and fit winter tyres on them. I don't understand how that would fit... MK2 has ET68 @ 8.5J and the MK1 has ET50 @ 8.5J. The wheels would be almost 2cm further out. That's not road legal here in Holland... [smilie=doubt.gif]
Also the manual sais I need to have 225 width tyres mounted on the back. This cannot be a correct size for an 8.5J rim !?!?

ALso the front rims do not match : ET6 for the MK2 and ET20 for the MK1.

Does anyone have experience with mounting winter tyres on their Vee ? I did not read it in this thread.

Hi Stefan,

I'm shortly going to get some winter tyres for my Vee, the sizes I've found that are suitable are 225/40/18 fronts and 245/40/18 for the rear, hope that helps :)

Slightly off-topic, but I've recently bought a OEM winter wheels & tyre set for my BMW E93 (it was scary last year!)
I bought the "set" because run-flats do not appreciate being pulled on/off the rims.
The specification of this winter tyre/wheel set is recommended across the entire 3 series range.
FTR they are 225/45 R17 at each corner (whereas my OEM M-sport wheels are F 225/40 R18 and R 255/35 R18; and the base model 3 series saloon is 205/55 R16 all round).
Might help specify an appropriate Vee equivalent? - though the tyre needs to fit the existing wheel rim.

Better late than never !...

got a pic of the document, just need to clean it up so you can read it !

Apologies it's delayed but my V6 is garaged elsewhere at the moment & the document was in the car as we're required by law to carry these docs with the car at all times !

Maybe it'll snow again before the winter is out [smilie=doubt.gif]
