And now i'm 50, done 911's, cosworths and M5, fancy a small weekend toy. So here i am. I fancy a Phase 2 as the handling problems i have read about put me off (as the wife will be bound to use it) Any advise?

Hi Andrew,

Welcome.

I'd say buy the best fully maintained car you can afford, to enjoy it as soon as possible.

A few nice ones on PistonHeads for sale at the moment.

Shout if you need any help with the forum (that's my bit) :)

James has summed it up [smilie=yay.gif] (as usual ! )
I can't add to that ! My phase 2 is an every day user - I DON'T drive it as it deserves but if you are the same as me then it can drive the same as a standard clio imo. If your gonna floor it all the time then it's not a standard clio !!!! Lol !!! :salut: it is easily and everyday car if driven In a responsible manner - phase 1 or 2 ( I have had both )

Now confused, which is better 1 or 2, Im lucky that it can be stored in my unit so will not do too many miles, but enjoyable ones, i have a few roads i want to test it on when it arrives, but dont know enough about these to make an informed decision. so any help would be appreciated great forum by the way, and i have spent a few hours looking around!

Well I've said this so many times now people are probably sick reading it.... I used to drive my PH1 like a right nutter, but just on the roads. Tracks don't really appeal to me, hence I never bought a Scalextric set. I could never understand what the journos kept banging on about it being twitchy? I admit I allowed the tyres tread to get low (just once) and it wasn't happy on oily roads.

The PH2 didn't actually feel any different to me when I got it, probably because I'm not skilled enough to notice any difference. I think I would have needed someone experienced to teach me about any handling chances between the two.

TYRES... That is something I seem to notice the difference with. Michelins felt safe ie no weird feelings, so did the Falkens, The Toyo's I couldn't wait to get them off the car. The magnesium wheels sure had grip! it felt like a land crab with those on it.

James, thanks for that, answered a few niggles i had!

I'm not intrestwd in track days either, i like to use a car on the road, and supprise the odd boy racer every now and again [cmilie=iconcheers.gif]

I REALLY DON'T WANT TO UPSET ANYONE HERE ;) but my own PERSONAL thought is "phase 2" it's a nicer car to be IN - that being said the phase 1 is the ORIGINAL version and really makes sense - investment wise - to buy a really nice phase 1 !! It's been said on here many many many times before that the phase 1 deserves to cost more than the phase 2 and can be a very sensitive subject - as said before I have owned both versions and I PERSONALLY prefer phase 2 because of for mentioned. I would say you buy either phase one or two but you get the absolute best you can AFFORD prices are going up so really if you like me do very few miles you go max on budget and get a cracker !! If you are not a speed freak phase 1 or 2 doesn't come into it ! Mine has 100 miles covered on Mich. S.sports and I lost rear end pulling away from traffic lights the other week and it scared the crap out of me !!!!!! But it must of been oil on road as I've heard no bad info on the mich. Tyres ? So in my experience even with the best tyres it is down to the surface you are driving on !!! Anyway I could go on and on but I think you should buy what you "prefer" they are two different cars but it goes down to what your heart tells you ! My heart says phase 2 ! Entirely depends on your OWN view and what your heart says to you [smilie=yay.gif] either way you can't really go wrong ! They are both fan-bloody-tastic !!!! Budget budget budget !! Ok I'm done [cmilie=iconcheers.gif]

:welcome:

The only time you'll notice a difference between a Ph1 and Ph2 is if you're a madman OR on a greasy/damp road.
In which case they're both difficult but the Ph1 is a tiny bit more difficult. The Ph1 is a tiny bit more of a drivers car but your wife will prefer the Ph2.
Having said that, she'll probably hate the turning circle on both of them 8)

Andy, welcome!

If you have driven any old school 911 (i.e. pre-996) in anger, preferably one without electronic aids, then you are well set, and will definitely enjoy the Clio V6 (Phase 1 or 2). The handling dynamics are similar, and your approach should be similar. The difference lies in the centre of gravity - that of the Vee being higher due to a tall V6 engine sitting higher than it really should, in a mid-rear position when compared with a flat 6 mounted low over the rear axle in the case of the 911. Good traction out of corners should be familiar, as is the front end going light at speed. Tyres will be key - I found Falken FK452's induced understeer, but changing to Pilot Super Sports made for a fantastic change, and a whole lot more feel and grip on turn in.

Good luck in your search - I am sure you will be smiling when you find the right one.

Enjoy!
