uprated head gaskets

coolant as per everything is a massive topic, cheap stuff changed every year - 2 years is what you want to do.
 
A few years ago I used cheap coolant while carrying out a head gasket repair on my phase 1 19 diesel and it destroyed the water ways in the alloy head. So forgive my caution I've just had this thing about bluecol and comma ever since. I prefer to use oe coolant wherever possible.
 
no coolant would destroy the water galleries unless there was some insane electrolysis going on and that would take time
 
I don't know myself 16 yrs workin on motors I've only ever seen in that car. It had cooling issues when I bought it and lifted the head off to find the head turning to powder before my eyes. At the time a renault technical expert gave me a second opinion and he put it down to cheap coolant. I reckoned it was no coolant at all causing the issue but he was insistent that renault developed their own coolant with good reason.

Renault developed hee-haw as the saying goes. They just took a generic ethylene glycol antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors and called it their own, maybe dyed it a nice colour.

Electrolysis is probably what done the damage to your diesel, the mixed metal used (copper, steel and aluminium) in the cooling system don't get on chemically, when theres an electrolyte involved (dodgy coolant/old coolant) then it just speeds up the process.

Go ahead! You learn something new every day. Reading that it makes perfect sense given the cagey servicing that the car had had up until that point it's not unreasonable to assume it had never had a coolant change which makes perfect sense:!:
