Time to get the old 21 Going... ABS problems...

R

Ryan

Hi,

I nearly bid on the 21 on ebay some of you guys have been talking about, but didn't in the end.

Think it's time to get my old one going instead...

Anyone had any experience with ABS problems?

Mine does the following:

ABS light goes out when you start the car, then when you drive it down the road the light comes on when you go over about 20MPH, and the ABS then stops working.

Does this just sound like a faulty sensor perhaps?

Thanks a lot.

Ryan

Hi,

The toothed rings on the driveshafts are more than likely dirty or corroded or both......the sensors pulse and take a reading from the grooves in the target rings (note this is speed dependant the slower you go the more chance of a reading)...if these are either a)dirty or b) missing, the sensors cant sense...and therefore as a safety measure shut down the ABS resorting back to std conventional braking.

Its 8/10 times likely to be this failing that, it could well be a sensor, then you get into the science of ohms and stuff which im bold enough to state, I dont understand

Good luck

p.s if cleaning ur rings, use WD40 or Carb Cleaner and a spark plug brush...nothing too harsh or the teeth will break off

Re ABS fault

You already ruled one factor out...the fact that the light comes on and goes out, only to come on again above 20mph.
This tells me that the sensors are NOT the problem. If the sensors were causing a problem the light would be on all the time.
The ABS system runs a self check on initial start-up which checks ALL of the electrical components, once complete, the light is switched off.
It then carries out the same check again once speeds exceed 21mph,if it detects a fault, the light is switched on and the ABS system is isolated.
As Lee says, the most likely cause will be corroded/pitted or missing teeth on the ABS rings.
I've found the best way to clean them is as follows....take a normal size flat blade screwdriver and simply run it between the teeth (cleaning out the build up btween the teeth)
This way you don't have to worry about taking any teeth off with a wire brush (and if Lee uses a wire brush to clean his ring, its no wonder he walks funny   )
I suspect that if you do this to all of the ABS rings you'll have a working system by the weekend

Cheers and hope this helps

p.s as for walkin funny, you seen Craig lately....under his jeans he has them PVC Black hotpants on...'im the only gay in the village'

Have scraped the moss off! And replaced the battery and she starts but runs a bit funny... need to get that sorted before looking at the ABS. Might just want some fresh fuel in there perhaps.

Thanks for all your help!

I beleive that the ABS reamains in

operation on the rear wheels if the fault is at the front of the vehicle

si21if i remeber correctly lol no fecking chance wots me name again where am i
