5 GT Turbo The perfect Renault 5 GTT Spec

Mostly, because I am bored, but I would like to call on the knowledge and experience of you guys for some help.

If I can manage to keep my job in this crazy time of life and keep the 5, I am going to rebuild it. But I want to know what the best setup would be.
It would be great if you could go into detail to help me and hopefully others build up a shopping list.

The only thing I know, is that I will be going 1.8 20v T Engine. but what about the rest.

Currently, I have these thoughts..

Suspension/ setup:
Front: Clio 16v Wishbones, Clio 16v ARB, Adjustable top mounts (Compbrake?), R5GTT Coilovers (Probably Gaz) Clio 16v Hubs (Are these different to the 5?)
Rear: Clio 16v Rear beam

Brakes:
172 Master cylinder and Servo
Manual Bias valve
Discs, pads, callipers = Unsure

Power Steering:
Corsa B power rack, does anybody know if the corsa C rack will work?
Actual Steering rack - Stick with a standard GTT rack if using corsa power rack.

Management:
Really not sure about this and have not done much research yet. I will look into how capable the standard management is before looking at aftermarket.

This is just the start, and all ideas at the moment but really want to know your ideas of a "perfect setup"
I am hoping for around 300hp and hope to use the car for some trackdays.

Are you stuck on using a VAG lump? The 774 or 784 if you are feeling flush is capable of 300bhp and 300ibft. Will keep it a Renault then as well.

Price, availability etc are factors for the engine. I was buying Duncans 1.8T out of his, but I am not sure I can afford that now because I was/am moving house so I am looking at a longer term project. I think If I could get hold of an engine in need of some TLC and cheap then there is nothing off limits.

i would use mk2 clio steering rack instead of gtt, and poss column for epas

My engine choice would be Honda K20, good n/a, even better turbo, gearbox is alright. Miles better than the Ren/vag.

K20 is a great shout. 6 speed box, I can only imagine it would need some serious fab work to get it to fit..

Supercharge it! 450bhp. Its what the lotus chaps tend to go for.
The K24A is a beast of a lump as well.

I can never find any decent write up on conversions. I guess people are secretive because they don't want others copying their ideas... Just had a quick ebay for K20's.. they seem to be around the 1k mark.

If I was to do it again and actually finish it I’d go Honda lump with a turbo for sure, so many aftermarket bits for them off the shelf.

I looked at engine management not long ago before moving forward with Link and I came to the conclusion that for around the £1000 they are all very similar. Emerald, Adaptronic, Haltech, Link etc all very similar. From the amount of Boosted Boiz I watch it seems that the Hondata is very capable too.

I’m building a 5 at the moment.

Clio 16v subframe, arms, arb, driveshafts,
172 hubs/brakes, 172 servo and master, 16v rear beam, in line ford bias valves

5GTT struts/ rear shocks and ph2 top mounts.

It’s a makey-upper

Great, thanks for the info.. Does it all bolt together or did you do much modification work? Is there much difference with the subframes?

Subframe is the basically the same thing between the models I gather, apart from one bolt hole being slightly different.
I fitted 16v hub flanges into the 172 hubs for the driveshafts.
the hubs needed a bit of material taking off the bolting faces to the strut to allow them to fit. Maybe 2mm max.

and the 16v rear beam is wider than a 5 campus beam. I don’t know if the GTT beam is the same width as campus or not.

Suspension: Gaz Shocks are great for a budget, but if this is perfect world, you can do a lot better GpA Clio1 Kit Car Spec for a start. I'd be looking for remote/side mount reservoirs and 4 way adjustment. From what I've read, this is even more important at the rear. Some kind of wide track will help and some roll centre correction. I'd also want to add a bag of caster too. Clio 172 Rear Stub Axles that allow you to use camber/toe shims are a must.

Brakes: Don't need too much extra power, so it's more important to cut unsprung mass for handling. The rear brakes are quite heavy for what they are. Look at what KAD do for classic Minis!

Engine: You can make crazy power from a lot of engines, but how much power will be usable is another question. A F4R renault will make more than enough for a FWD application. Anything above 300-400 bhp will probably result in slower lap times.

Body Shell: These are '80's cars and the shells need to be a bit stiffer. A well designed roll cage that ties in strut towers and rear beam attachments would be worth the extra weight. GRP doors bonnet and boot, maybe even carbon (carbon not essential if not adding strength). Tubular Front subframe with options for suspension tweaks.

Transmission: Sadev ST82-14/17 with plate type LSD.

ECU: Something high with a shit-ton of data logging ability. Emtron/Motec etc.

Lots of other stuff. You could go crazy. Look what Renault did with the lastest RSM GBP72,000 fully spec'd!
